Fantastic classic old school lifting focused set up with clean, well kept and cooperatively maintained facilities with 24/7 access. Self selects for motivated members that are respectful, focused on their workout, and minimizes some of the negatives of modern gym culture through its focus and form. People are here to lift, rerack, and respect each other and the space. I took the barbell master class and continued with the open gym membership with coaching add on. This includes an app that has guided programs as well as access to coaches virtually and in person. The coaches are professional, great at teaching form and technique, and just solid dudes here to help you get better in the way you want to be better. Five stars all around.

It is emotional to think about how hard standard movements were for me after a major car accident…read more And now, I'm completing circuit classes at Elite. Sean Ivy runs the class I keep returning to. He's professional, quick to scan the room for minor corrections or to provide form adjustments and options for amplifying or modifying as needed. From young bucks to senior craisins, the class has something for everyone. There's even a couple who brings their child and a pack-n-play, so that they can build designated workout time into their schedule. Genius! I personally love that my classmates are so diverse in fitness and in life, because it lends to the flow without judgement. There are also regulars using the gym, separate from class, and it's nice to see them repeatedly. I didn't realize that would help me lock in, but there must be some empirical evidence about social support and psychological motivation toward performance/results. I feel it in my tone. Get it?! If you think I'm cheesy, then it means I could write dad jokes...which I'd take as a compliment. The gym has a home-grown feel to it, and the space is naturally bright--which I think is uncommon and joyous at the same time. Sean's circuits or drills are thoughtfully planned and include necessary breaks. On some occasions, I'm still in the middle of sets when the timer goes off. Again, no judgement and I just end up finishing a bit later than others. I'm usually drenched at the end, and there's no rush if you want to stay and stretch. My post-workout ritual includes washing my face and arms (yes, I do feel like a surgical nurse, hahaa!), and reapplying sunblock before I return to the outside world. The whole routine makes me feel accomplished and also stronger than the workout before. I have taken classes hosted by Caroline and Francisco (Paco) as well. They and Sean are excellent, and they can teach you whether you are a fitness novice or expert. I say this because it is a specialized skill to have the empathy and instructional awareness to lead a proper workout. It only takes a second to injure your one-and-only body, so I think it's got higher stakes than sitting in a classroom where Pulitzer-prize-winning Dr. X is so smart but can't translate the course materials in a way that is digestible and exciting to their audience. The owners, Jerry and Caroline, are knowledgeable and kind human beings. Funny story (to me at least) is that I didn't initially know they were a couple. I saw them speaking to one another and thought, oh they'd be so cute together...and I learned during the next class that they were in fact married! Perfect example of how nothing I thought or did was involved except that I felt good about myself. Give me a few more months with Elite and I will truly be good about myself! I highly recommend Sean's 10am class on Saturdays. You can book him on Classpass or do a drop-in for $20. It will help set the pace for your weekend, and you can then return to the food snobbery that is totally acceptable on Yelp. Feel free to chat me up after class if you want to talk about foodie gems in South Bay.

The gym is overcrowded and intimidating, and what they call personal training feels like large group classes with little to none supervision. And then for about a year I just ate a bunch of junk, sat on my ass for days and days, never exercised or stretched - I come with baggage, to say the least. I chose this gym for mainly the following reasons: 1) there were old grammas in the pictures - because I totally identify with them 2) Kei studied Kinesiology at USC 3) the pricing is super fair 4) I liked their website, Yelp page, and general online presence. I've been training with Kei for about 3 months now. We had to start super slow but Kei took his time, never rushed me, paid very close attention to my complaints, and always knew how to adjust so that I could continue to strengthen without any further injuries. I've definitely gotten stronger - household duties have gotten considerably easier. I just feel so. much. better. The goal is to get lean and mean, which I'm sure Kei and Mars can take me there but most importantly I needed someone who could help rehabilitate this broken body and Kei delivered. :D And training is fun.
