We discovered Bodega Taco Bar on a return trip from New York City over seven years ago! This is a must stop for us on every trip to Norwalk or beyond. It's been over a year since our last visit and we have missed it so much. Yesterday morning we called to be sure they were open and wanted to be certain we could get a spot as we had very limited time, we're picking up a new puppy! Matt, the manager answered the phone and couldn't have been nicer. Told us to call as we were getting closer. The food, staff, ambience are all authentically amazing! Wish we had more time to enjoy and savor our delicious guac, salsa and meals! Sadly, we had no time even for a margarita! We have missed their food and BTB is always a highlight of a seemingly long trip! So happy to hear that both Darien and Fairfield locations have done so well during this pandemic. As a former bodega employee, this is really disappointing. I was craving the Argentino tacos, guac and Brussels. I placed an order Sunday evening at 7:30 and was told it was going to be an hour wait for two tacos and two sides. Whatever it's worth the wait right. I go to pick up and had to wait even longer than the one hour and by the time I got my bag the guacamole wasn't even in there. I walk back inside to get my guac and drive the 15 min back to Norwalk. I get home over an hour later and notice that the container with brussel sprouts wasn't even half full and there were no exaggeration 3 small pieces of steak and maybe 3 pieces of tomato in my taco. I know for a fact this is not how this place runs and I know the owners would be extremely disappointed to find out this is the quality of service their staff is providing to their customers, including former staff members. read more

Very accommodating personnel, people smiling and in good vibe when interacting with us. Food was tasty especially the guacamole. Recommending their happy hour. Thinks are really good especially their margaritas. I would suggest to play a bit more of the Latino music. Think it would help the atmosphere. I typically don't like to give not so favorable reviews because it seems as though everyone focuses on the negative... I am making a bit of a concession here. This is the 3rd time that I have been at a Bodega Taco Bar establishment. The first time was in Fairfield and the next two times were in Darien. It hurts me to say that while the food is pretty darn okay (not a big foodie), the service has always been nothing short of rude. Like down and out rude. Almost like being talked to as if you don't understand how the rules here work, type of thing... It was a special night out with girlfriends I had not seen in a long time because of families, busy, etc. and we ended up leaving to go to a place that was totally different and only a couple doors down. I'm a fan of the Bartaco restaurants, and this place was very similar. It was a casual, relaxed atmosphere and the staff was very friendly (but seemed a little inexperienced). I had the hangar steak and an Argentinian taco, and they were both delicious. The steak was cooked right on and the chimichuri sauce was delicious. I also got a side of corn, which was very tasty as well. For drinks we had a couple pitchers of the signature "Bodegarita" which was very good. I'm not sure if it was $45 good, but then again all the drinks at these new restaurants are all pricey. Nice spot. Would definitely recommend it. read more

Chips and Guac were SOOO delicious, on point. Wish we had more chips though, couldn't finish the Guac which was a travesty. I had the seafood paella. It was my first time ever eating paella and it was AMAZING. Really large portion, I took a good half of it home. Lots of seafood, really big bits of scallop and shrimp. The actual clams were on the small side, but the shells made the dish more aesthetically pleasing. Bodega had a really cool atmosphere and vibe. A mix of families, business people, and young people for lunch. Also, it seemed only attractive guys worked the joint which was awesome. Definitely would recommend. read more

I ate here 2 Fridays in a row. Arrived after 8 pm & we were immediately seated. Order the Baja & tuna tacos. Delicious. Loved the roasted beets & Brussels sprouts. Even got my kids to eat some! Service was good. I will definitely go back. The sangria & guacamole were decent but I've had better. Will just try something else next time. Been back several times. Amazing food, good prices--a great new addition to Darien. The staff is super friendly and accommodating. Also great for take out. I HATE cilantro and this is one of the few places that is consistently able to meet my "no cilantro" request (eat in and take out). Fantastic place. The tacos are delicious. Cocktails are even better. Generally a good atmosphere (even for Darien, which can be pretty pretentious), the staff here keeps things real with great service and good humor. One of the best restaurants in town. I could eat their chicken tinga tacos for days. (Once ate them for 3 days in a row). If you get their margarita make sure you get it made with rose angel tequila. For a non alcoholic beverage you gotta get one of their Mexican sodas. read more

WARNING: their online order form charges significantly higher prices than their online menu. This form charges $6 more for the taco six pack than their listed price on their website, and between $.50-1.00more per taco/ salsa/ guac etc. This makes no sense as online orders have none of the overhead associated with in person orders no serving staff, table space etc and is frankly bad business. When I attempted to place a order over the phone to get around these silly up charges for the takeout website I was dismissed and told that an order placed over the phone would be delayed by 15 extra minutes. Bad business all around- either update your online menu to reflect the actual prices or make your takeout form prices consistent with advertised prices. Great food but questionable management decisions and misleading advertising. read more

A great place for lunch during the weekday. I've been here a few times with my coworkers and people are always generally happy. Chips and salsa are a good way to start, the chips are large and homemade. I stick to ordering tacos when I'm at Bodega so I get to have a bunch of different tastes. After my visits a couple tacos have been established as favorites. The Baja taco (mahi mahi, pico, lemon aioli) and the Gambas (chili shrimp, cucumber mango salsa, chipotle mayo) are great choices for anyone who likes seafood. The Burnt Brisket taco is nothing too special just a generally good taco with ample brisket. Crispy Korean Chicken taco is one I always order, it does have red pepper paste that can be spicy if you get a lot of it in one bite but I don't usually like anything too spicy and I can handle it so it's nothing too outrageous. The Americano (seasoned ground beef, manchego cheese, salsa rusa in a crispy taco) sounds like a stereotypical taco but I always order it (and sometimes get two!). Its a nice basic taste that I like to have between some of the more exotic tastes. The manchego cheese is what really makes the Americano my favorite. The tacos aren't giant so I usually get 3 or 4 to make a meal. All in all the service at Bodega has been pretty good. Sometimes they can be a little slow during the lunch hours, especially if you're with a big group, so if we're in a rush we try to get our orders in quickly. I called them very late to see if they could handle a catering order, I was suddenly unable to do it and had my nieces baby shower (yes taco baby shower!)... they stepped up and had my order ready before they were even officially open. read more

I wish I could write this review just on the food, because it's really good. And there are no places in Darien where you can get tacos and/or small plates for $4 so that's an extra bonus. The mexican corn is absolutely amazing! However, we couldn't really enjoy the food because of the awkward seating and hard to hear even if someone is screaming in your ear acoustics. I felt like i was at a rock concert. So here's the deal, if you come with a party of 3, they will not sit you at a booth. Additionally, they only have two-top tables. Meaning, that the only way to eat is for them to pull up a stool and the third person sits uncomfortably on a metal stool. Even when all of the other tables around us were emptying, they wouldn't give my friend a chair, because they were "holding them" for other tables of 4. Does this make any sense? We are all diners at the restaurant! What does it matter if you are a table of 2-3-4-5-6 or any number? Doesn't everyone deserve a chair if there are chairs available on a first come first serve basis? Absolutely insane. Whoever designed this place must have been on crack. That being said, the food tasted good. The tacos are tasty and the drinks are good. We did not stay long enough to try desert. I would not go back. read more

Everything was delicious! My boyfriend and I sat at the bar. Atmosphere was great and seemed to be the hottest place in town at the moment. Very busy. We ordered the spicy crab guacamole which was dynamite! Make sure you try it! Then we also had the tuna tartar app on a tostada. It was hard to eat but very delicious as well. We ordered the pollo Rico sandwich which had chicken and fried plantains. I could eat that everyday of the week it was so good. We also tried the lamb taco special, fried avocado taco and shrimp with veggie mix taco. All delicious. I would definitely recommend all of these dishes and the place itself. This is the first and only negative yelp review I've ever left, so let me start there. I believe in supporting small businesses, have been a server, etc. I was on my way from NYC to VT and google maps suggested this as a good lunch spot on my path. I was wearing clean, casual clothing and am quite visibly queer and was alone. I sat down and was waited on in an average/slow amount of time- they were busy, no stress there. I opted out of the $8 guacamole they offered at the outset, and from then on I couldn't tell if I was being hassled because of visible queerness or visible not richness, but I sure was hassled! I ordered $16 worth of simple tacos, which didn't come out for almost an hour! All the pearl clad people around me were being served, people who came in after me, and I thought they may have lost my order. I went to the restroom after about 40 minutes of waiting, leaving my things at my table as evidence that I hadn't left, and when I can back from a quick pee all my stuff, including water and full coffee and my phone, were bussed. I went to the back and had to really advocate to get my phone back- they were resistant. My coffee and water were never refilled, even when I was served much later. I ate quickly and wanted to get out of there- I wasn't sure what was going on but it felt like my waitress was mad at me. No one checked on me forever. I waited for the bill for another 30 minutes after I was done, which I was still willing to chalk up to awkwardness, busyness, etc. Benefit of the doubt! Serving is hard/shitty! BUT THE KICKER, folks, is that when I got my bill for $19, I gave them $30 and asked for change. And I waited. And the change never came. For 20 more minutes. At this point I've been at the restaurant for nearly 2 hours for what I hoped would be a classy but quick road trip stop. I went up and asked someone if I could get my change, and they said they'd send over my server, who again never came. I eventually flagged my waitress down (which I usually never do, feeling rude, but wtf) and my server said "Are you SURE you want change?" I'm such a mean, mocking tone and she actually chuckled at me when I said yes. I felt like I was going crazy, maybe Darien CT was some sort of Stepford Twilight Zone, and ran the math on my phone. Is it normal in CT to leave a 60% tip? Am I a jerk? Why does this person seem to hate me? Waiting for my change. Which. Never. Came. I was going to let it go because honestly the small amount of cash we were talking about was, well, small, and I was going to tip 20-25% like I always do, but it was really stressful to be treated this way. I marched to the desk and asked why she hadn't brought my change. She said there had been a misunderstanding. I asked, through nervousness, what the misunderstanding was- had she thought the bill was $29, in which case asking for change would be whack? Is it customary to leave an almost 60% tip? Was she mad I didn't get $8 guac, or that I was the only homo in this country club town? What was going on? She finally brought me change, I tipped and left, 2 entire hours and 45 actual minutes from sitting down. I was delayed for important plans and felt awful. Worst restaurant experience I have ever had, in my whole life. I cried! The tacos were delicious, but the service was more than rude or negligent- it was literally cruel. Would! Not! Recommend! Especially if you don't look 100% wealthy Connecticut Hetero. Update- the owner wrote back with a thoughtful response about how he addressed the harm with his staff and tried to make it right and repair the harm. I absolutely loved everything about this restaurant. The apps were delicious, the tacos were flavorful. And I loved that you could get just as many as you wanted... one, two, three. I have family in Darien so will be making a point of visiting Bodega as much as possible when I'm in town! This place is not safe for allergies. I have Celiac Disease and I communicated this very clearly to my waiter. He was cocky, arrogant and dismissive. He did not write anything down, and he told me it was not necessary for the kitchen to change their gloves prior to handling my food. I insisted on the seriousness of my condition and asked him to ensure they use an allergy preparation for my order. Two hours later, and I am sick. My food was cross contaminated by their unsafe practices, and I'll never recommend this place to anyone.
