After dinner some fríends and i decided to get more drinks somewhere else...so passing by i saw this place and remember i had it on my bookmarks! perfect timing! So it was past midnight and it was bursting with people! Love the place! Old, filled with bottles from everywhere...they even had a board that a some point back in the 80's they had a beer competition, i thought it was great to keep récords such as those because it adds character to the place. So we stated there 'til around 3 ...well until the waiter politely kicked us and others out. Great place! read more

I didn't realize this bar was so well received on Yelp. A sign for Brew Dog caught my attention, so I went inside. It was comfortable crowded with people situated behind the bar watching Real Madrid play Valencia (how do I get back there without crawling through the bartenders' space?). I ordered a 5am Saint which was served in a lovely glass capped with a foamy head. I also received a small dish of olives. They were delicious as they easily came apart about the pit. It's a great place to read a book surrounded by hundreds of empty beer bottles and miscellaneous spirits. I'll probably have to return for some tapas. read more

Life goal is to live within walking distance of a place like this! My friend John knew that I had only 12 hours in Madrid, and being the stand up guy that he is, he brought me on a walking tour of the city that included 10 different watering holes, including a Botellón! How he managed to remember his routes, and even more so how to find the best food at the appropriate times during the crawl was both astounding, and a bit humbling. Take notes race fans, hosting in your town might require this level of dedication...are you prepared? Winning the bar at the Bodega de la Ardosa close to 10pm was no easy feat, but once there the joys of Madrid were again mine. With the ubiquitous Jamon flowing freely, and sardines and mushrooms to fill in the gaps, we were able to finally begin alternating Vodka Tonics with our beers and to really begin the evening. This was the perfect venue to do so. On a Thursday the place was filled to overflowing with a respectful crowd and lots of open conversations. I remember football of course, motorcycles, something about China, and cowboys, which undoubtedly was related to my boots, all being discussed by everyone at the bar. There was a fair amount of talk about the wine as well, which only makes sense at a Bodega I suppose. My day in Madrid is one of my favorite memories, and the welcome at the Bodega de la Ardosa was one of the hi lites. Enjoy! Salud! read more

Solid tapas bar. Cool history as it's been around since 1892. Then tortilla tapas (potatoes, egg, and onion pancake) was very yummy, but the artichoke tapas is one of the best things I've ever put in my mouth. This place, and specifically the artichoke, were recommended to me by another local who owns a bar in the area and it surpassed all my expectations. Seriously. You need some of it in your life and you'll never look at artichoke the same way again!!! They also had IPA beer on tap, which I found pleasantly surprising, being a fan and knowing it's rarity in this part of the world. Check this place out and grab some tapas and a beer! read more

Came here for happy hour and got some wine/beer. We also ordered the tortilla de patata and the croquettes. The plates were a bit small but enough to complement our drinks. I really enjoyed their beer; it was much refreshing. Overall, we enjoyed our time, but I would not go out of my way to visit. read more

This place was wonderful, hidden away from the main street you realize how old the place is once you go inside. Very traditional food and small atmosphere allows you connect with the other patrons. We spent 30 Euros and got beef, little finger bites and a potato pie all were so delicious! Plus to top it off I had a Guinness and my wife drank wine. TERRIBLE SERVICE, DON'T GO THERE. They didn't care about us at all. They ignored us. We stepped in the bar and asked if we could have lunch. The waiter said yes, so we started looking for a table. There was only one stool and we were 2.. So we went to the counter and tried asking them for another one, but they didn't care at all. They didn't answer when we called them, turned their backs at us, started doing something else when we were talking to them! There was only one waiter in this very small bar, DOING NOTHING but looking at the floor. I was shocked. He didn't came to us and didn't try to communicate with us when he heard we didn't speak Spanish. WE LEFT IMMEDIATELY. read more

Wow. I'll echo everybody else and tell you to make this your first stop in Madrid for freaking amazing tortilla. The inside was so gooey but there's no cheese, just caramelized onion and potato goodness. Add this to some simple but delicious fried artichokes and my favorite combo of vermouth and green olives, and I was a happy camper here. I walked in for lunch and had the pinche de tortilla de patata (an omelette-based keish)and the carilla de buey estofada (meat stew with thick sauce, on a plate). Both were delicious! I loved the carilla de buey especially, though not on the lean side, so soft and tasty, with just the right amount of flavor from the peppers they mix in. I followed things with a coffee and their chocolate lava cake. This place, though very small, has a lovely rustic charm that makes you feel like you stepped into another era. Tiny historic wine establishment with back room that you access by going under the bar. Food was traditional and outstanding. This bar oozes with character. And based on the hoards of people pouring out and into the place, that's not much of a secret. The question at hand is not so much when is it busy as when is it not busy, and I'm thinking that maybe the answer to that is never. This is one of the classic, turn of the 20th century Madrid bars that you often find around the center of the city. It is all dark wood, dim lighting, cozy, with an impressive collection of old beer bottles and cans, Goya drawings and a couple of of beautiful, large old Pilsner taps (one for beer and one for their famous vermouth) on the bar and a very old Guinness tap right in the middle. We, miraculously, arrived at a lull on Friday at 9pm and were able to nab a couple of stools at the bar (!). A strategic front row to the frenzied action that was soon to follow and in perfect view of the many small signs and the chalkboard listing and advertising all of the menu items. The stars of the show seemed to be the tortilla de patata (spanish omelet with potatoes and onion), salmorejo (andalusian tomato soup), jamon serrano, and a mouthwatering list of canapes (lots of non-meat options). While sipping (no, I don't really sip) our perfect beers and our insanely delicious goose liver and blueberry preserves canape, roughly 3 different people asked for a portion of tortilla from the waitress, who, noticeably exhausted by the question, firmly but kindly stated that it would not be ready until 9:30. Thus began my waiting... Drum roll, friends, and don't tell my mother-in-law, this is the best tortilla de patatas that I have ever had. The consistency and the flavor are perfect. It brought tears to my eyes and I wanted to vow to never eat tortilla anywhere else, ever, but since I don't live in the neighborhood I knew it wasn't going to happen. What will happen is that we will be returning and will slowly but surely work our way through the entire menu. Price aside (the salmorejo is a whopping 9 eur), this bar is very worth return visits, and next time we'll take advantage of the "hidden" dining area right behind the bar. read more

I've been hearing about this place for forever, as it's a loved venue for yelpers.... So the other day after a yelp event we moseyed on over to give it a try. Boy was it busy!! Word sure does get around. I admit that we didn't get to try any food (the yelp event pretty well filled us up) but the wine and cañas were definitely delicious. As were the olives. I would say my favorite thing about this bar is the fact that when you step in, you really do feel like you've traveled back in time. The decor is super cool - it's an old world, turn-of-the-century-Madrid feel. Try it when you're in the neighborhood! read more

This was hands down the best tapas place we had in Spain. The best thing on the menu has to be the tortilla espinoza...huge, fresh, a little runny, really delicious. Prices are decent and they have a really nice jamon selection as well. I've heard such great things about this place, and it certainly is a unique experience - where else would you need to crawl under the counter to get more standing/sitting space. Speaking of sitting, there really isn't anywhere to sit, so be prepared to stand. The food isn't bad. The croquettes are good, though what's the deal with no patatas bravas?!? Also not many options for food allergies like gluten intolerant but that's probably asking a lot! It was very busy, even in the middle of the afternoon so I guess people love it, but i'm not sure what the big deal was. It seemed over crowded and way too disorganised for food that was just 'ok'. This place has the best tortilla hands down, and I have consumed my fair share this week in Spain! I think the locals seem to back this up too, as countless have walked by pointing and saying "tortilla." It is a cute little place in a great neighborhood where I am staying. We had coffee and the Spanish omelette twice here to start our days. The price is super reasonable and the service is great. It also seems to have a strong following in the evenings too. read more

A huge disappointment. Yes, it's got the charming decor but nothing else. The "best" tortilla in town was slightly above average (I spent a month walking the Camino, eating my way through tortillas from the north and some in Madrid and Andalucia). A couple bars around town does almost as good and they didn't charge me 3 euro for this privilege. The beers were expensive and the pilsner that the waiter poured was mostly head (for 3 euro). They had a Punk IPA for 7 euro (no, thank you! it's less than a pound at Tesco). 2 beers and a tortilla for 10 euros and I didn't get any tapas that the locals got. read more

Updating and elaborating on my previous review. I really wanted to love this place. I was looking forward to coming here and trying the tortillas. However, upon arriving, I received probably some of the worst service I've ever experienced. This place is pretty small and standing room only; maybe holds about 30-40 people max. I walked up to the bar since I was by myself, and attempted to flag down somebody to take my order. It wasn't that full when I was there, maybe about 60% capacity. After approximately 10 minutes of trying to get somebody's attention, I finally managed to get somebody to take my order. Since I don't speak Spanish (I understand a little bit), I started reciting my order in English. Halfway through, the waiter/bartender just walks away and goes to help somebody else. Apparently they don't have the time of day to serve foreigners. To make matters worse, this is one of the very few cash-only places in Madrid. For that inconvenience, the place better be amazing. They keys to this place are: good lager on tap (miles beyond Spanish beer) and the hours. when everything else in the area is closed preparing to be open all night for malasaña partyers, ardosa is serving up drinks from early to late. It's old, there's a guiness competition record, and the walls have azulejos and Goya's Los Caprichos. Plenty of conversation fodder to wash down your tall (but not cheap) glasses of beer. Unfortunately, I find the olives bitter. All in all, I'd say it's worth a visit to assess if you want to return. I've found myself in there many times. They also have vermouth on tap. read more

Came here on a Sunday.... Rare occasion when this place is empty. My first ever try and will probably be the last. Perhaps many tourists are used to bad service and average food but for me, that doesn't cut it. Everything you can eat or drink in this place is absolutely delicious... after 9PM omelette is the star of the place, best one I've tried so far in Madrid although I would also recommend the "Solomillitos de Atún de Isla Cristina". They're famous for the draught pilsner Urquell but they also have other international beers. My wife and I walked in, were told ( we both speak Spanish) in Spanish, "We are not a restaurant", when we could clearly see tables on other side of the bar with people seated and eating. When we asked how to get to the tables, we were told, "this is all there is", meaning the tables in front of the bar was all that was available. They are rude to tourists. My wife studied abroad in Madrid many years ago-- while she's no longer fluent in Spanish, she can get by. We figure it's best to try to speak the language, than just assume everyone speaks English. Well here, the bartender made fun of my wife's Spanish. Then spoke extremely fast back to her to purposefully confuse her. Then brought out something we did not order. The proceeded to speak to the other guests in English. When my wife came back to the table, she was in tears. Both of the bartenders were totally rude to us. I can only wonder if they actively want people like us to write negative reviews so that more tourists will avoid this place. read more
