This smallish bar feels like a German pub. They also have more German beers on draft (17, I think) than I have seen anywhere else ever. They offer American and English beers, too, but come on, this is a German beer bar. When in Rome, er, Berlin, drink what the natives drink. I was greatly impressed by the six or seven non-alcoholic selections. We tried a non-alcoholic Belgian that was very nice. Apparently, you can sometimes get German food from a window around the side of the bar but the cook was AWOL during our visit, which was honestly a major disappointment. Like many people, I need some kind of food or snack to keep me going while I am imbibing. This place is super cool. TVs all around, plus a pool table and shuffleboard. The beer menu is amazing, and they've got solid food options too. I had a Trillium IPA, which you almost never see on tap around here so that was a great surprise. They're dog friendly and even give out dog treats. The space is big with tons of seating, dim lighting, and a really relaxed vibe. Staff were friendly. Definitely a spot I'd come back to. read more

Wow! This place hits their one year anniversary in a few days! It has a dark interior and replicant of an actual German Pub. They have ample parking outside the restaurant. There aren't servers that come to your table, so please be mindful that you'll need to order and then take a seat. Their food window is towards the right corner and then you'd need to order drinks at the bar. You're allowed to grab their food menu and take a seat with it. On Sundays, they have a schnitzel deal in which your scented comes with potato salad and sauerkraut (red cabbage). I wasn't a fan of that, but the schnitzel reminded me of our travels in Germany! The beers were very refreshing. They had an extensive beer menu with over 30 beers to try. I ended up getting a hazy and my fiancé had the wheat beer. It was great and the beertenders were friendly as well. We spent a lot of time eating and drinking. We were also allowed to bring our small dog inside. If you're looking for a German pub, this is your place. Love that it is in South Park and is a local bar. It has truly an authentic German vibe and the food is authentic as well. The beer selection is nothing short of what is expected either! There are many craft beers ranging from German imports to local crafts. There is also a pool table and shuffleboard to play. Okay, one obvi comes here for the beer selection but what one found out, is that they have a falafel wrap that is probably one of the best that you'll have! It's so perfectly moist (sorry to y'all that cringed, there's no other way to describe it!). It's delicious! We love a place that has options for our vegetarian friends (Hi - that would be me!) Pretzel? Bomb. Better with the beer cheese than the mustard I think but both options are amazing (or dip in both if you're feeling wild! Such a variety of drinks whether you're feeling a little more on the fruity or light side or want something darker and heavier, they have so much. A beer/drink for everyone! Munich meets South Park. The decidedly German influenced Bock breathes new life into the former Hamilton's - and it's a good thing. The menu consists of half German, Belgian and generally imported beers and then some American flare. They also have food by way of Biersal who does them right. Yours truly had a German and a Belgian and then, when in Rome (er, Deutschland) I ordered a chicken schnitzel sandwich with fries. Twas delicious and the beers helped wash down the fried, European inspired, diet-killing grub. Less than zero regrets. On a Saturday afternoon, I popped into this location for a couple of drinks. Perhaps this was not the best time to check out this German bar in South Park neighborhood as it was Oktoberfest. The bar was packed with people, and there was not even a place to stand. With that said, the bar is small, its long and narrow- on one side of the bar there are booths for larger groups, in the middle there are a couple of seats, and then the bar has a couple of seating. In general seating is very limited. During prime times be prepared to stand. To receive service- you need to go to the bar to order. There is a single file line. There is no food service at the bar. If you snag a booth, there looked like there was some table service but maybe just for clearing tables. The menu does have a solid list of offerings. There are over 30 beers on tap. If you are not a beer fan, there are some wine too on the menu. For a boot, the beer was 19 dollars. A little on the higher side. The bar does not offer food, but next door is Biersal which offers German food. Parking is within the neighborhood. This area gets extremely busy so street parking can be challenging. When parking, read the signs carefully so you do not get a ticket. read more

I've been to Bock several times now and enjoyed each experience. It's a little loud, surprisingly dimly lit, and always packed. It's a bar! For adults only! With great beer on draft! And Biersal, their food partner, has delicious vegan food options! With a well curated beer list of Old World (German, Belgian, etc) and New World (CA brewery dominant) offerings, most any beer drinker will find something they love. For the non-beer folks, they also offer a selection of nice European wines, cider, seltzer, and even kombucha. They even have N/A options for the young, sober kidz. As vegans, we really appreciate the thoughtful vegan options, clearly marked on Biersal's menu. The vegan bratwurst is fabulous! The grilled Beyond brat is topped with sauerkraut, whole grain mustard, and pickled red onions, and it's served in a toasted bun. We've also ordered the zucchini falafel wrap, a hearty, veggie forward option with a surprising kick of spice. The fries are of course delicious, and the potato salad (vegan as is) packs a vinegary punch. The vegan currywurst is delicious too. We've also come here with friends who are gluten-free, and they too have been kindly accommodated by the Biersal kitchen - just ask and they'll hook you up. They have a weekday happy hour (Monday - Friday, 3-5pm) which I have yet to enjoy. Also know that seats are first come, first served, and they don't take reservations. I wouldn't recommend this place for a group bigger than six people, and even then there are only a few tables that will seat all of you. But hey, it's a bar, and this is what bars are like. If I'm reviewing solely the beer, it would be 5 stars. However, the service I've had the few times has been a little bit sub-par. Where I've almost felt rushed to pick a beer and get out of the way. I've only tried one food option, and if I was reviewing solely on that, I wouldn't return. The vegan currywurst was exceptionally disappointing. I understand that working with a vegan substitute isn't easy, but if you're going to have it on the menu, I would hope it's not just a sliced up Smart dog. My sons had been here before and thought it was a place we would enjoy. We did! It's a very interesting spot. My son said it was exactly like places he frequented in Germany. Glad to see a German beer hall in San Diego to kind of round out the foodie scene. I didn't personally have a beer that day, but it seemed like they had a nice selection on tap. The chicken schnitzel sandwich was massive and delicious. I did not think the potato salad was really a German potato salad, it was a very creamy Americanized version of that, but it still tasted good. The interior of Bock is too dark. This seems to be by design as the few windows that they do have were closed curtain. It was also very loud in there, difficult to have a conversation. Overall though, the atmosphere was festive and enjoyable. You order your food at a little window and then retrieve it when the coaster they give you lights up. The beer and ambiance is worth the visit. Really cozy and feels like you are transported to another world. Bock has a phenomenal selection of brews for all palates. Was surprised to see Pliney offered, but also excited because it was the first beverage I selected. Bartenders were knowledgeable on which ale to recommend which is also helpful. I didn't see it anywhere and bartenders didn't offer, but would be cool to drink out of a giant stein or boot. You order food around the corner from the bar. Food was enjoyable, but the star of the show is the schnitzel sandwich which was STACKED. It isn't traditional German food (you wouldn't bread schnitzel with panko) but I'm glad they serve something to help you soak up all the beer suds that's on theme. Also, THEY ALLOW DOGS!!!! Finally checked out this newer South Park gem! They took over where the old Hamilton's was, and it's a great addition to the neighborhood. They focus on German & Alsace beers and wines, but have an extensive drink offering beyond that. They recently brought in a full time kitchen in Kurz, which specializes in German fare, made with seasonal and local ingredients. I had the Chicken schnitzel and Currywurst with fries and my brother got the Beet Reuben. All three dishes were fresh and outstanding. The atmosphere inside is lively, spacious feeling despite a small footprint and authentically German. A great place to watch a game, grab a bite or drink! Great job guys read more

Showed up for happy and good timing as it was getting busy by the time I left. For the non beer drinkers there are limited choices, but glad they do have options. They have wine and cider (maybe even kombucha). I ordered the regular bratwurst and falafel. Both were on happy hour the day I went which can vary the day you go. Have to go to the back area (to the right of the bar) where the kitchen window is at to order. Both tasted good paired well with my drink. I can't remember what drink I ordered, but def not beer nor cider. They have some games scribed on some of the tables that you can try and play. Wanted to try this new South Park joint. We got beer and food. Let's start with the beer. You order in the middle of the bar. They have a great selection from breweries. A little expensive but good. This isn't necessarily a dive bar where you'll get cheap beers with cheap food. It's nicer than other dive bars in the area. As for the food: you order on the right hand-most side. Solid choices. The French fries didn't blow me away but some off their sausage selections were great! We had their sausage platter special which was 3 sausages and a side of bread and condiments. Was kinda expensive for 22 dollars. With that said, all of their sauces are homemade and were phenomenal! As for the interior. It's very vibe-y and hipster. Its first come first serve for seating. They also have a pool table in the back. Please note this is NOT the place to take a date. It is dark and tremendously loud and rather packed. Service was great - always had a bartender swinging by to pick up plates and cups. Parking wise there's street but it may take you a hot second as it's residential. All in all this is a great place to swing by and get a beer with a friend. Don't recommend for big groups or dates. read more

Bock is a new German-themed beer bar that has opened together with Biersal in the South Park neighborhood. It replaced a longtime tavern that closed several years ago after a fire gutted the space. All of the seating was first come first served without any staff to assist the customers. I wasn't a fan of the layout that featured multiple booths plus spots along the bar area. I think if they want to emulate a German beer hall, then an open seating plan with long communal tables would be better suited. It was congested at each of my two visits with many folks standing along the walls to wait for a booth to be vacated. Over 30 beers were on tap, and you place an order at the middle counter with a bartender. Food was available around the corner at a different service window that was staffed by Biersal which used to be a food truck vendor. The choices seemed limited, however I hope there will be additions in the near future as the business grows. Six main items, three sides, two snacks, and one shared pretzel were the offerings. The Currywurst was my choice from the mains. The item was described online as classic Berlin style-bockwurst, caramelized onions, house curry ketchup, house curry powder with a side of fries, and house aioli. It could be prepared as vegan which I thought was nice for those who wanted it in such a style. The sausage was sliced into small pieces and covered with the onions. The curry flavor in the powder and ketchup was not strong. I liked the aioli better especially as a dip for the french fries. The positive news is that the initial customer volume has been high even with parking being all curbside in South Park. Perhaps those who had frequented the previous tavern have been waiting for this neighborhood pub to open, thus the strong demand. For now, I gave a 3.5 star rating for my experience at Bock. read more

The word "bock" comes from the German "Bockbier," a shortening of "Einbecker Bier," meaning "beer from Einbeck," a city in Germany. "Bock" refers to a strong, malt-forward lager beer style traditionally brewed in the fall and aged through the winter for spring consumption, characterized by its rich, malty flavors and a moderate hop bitterness. As I entered with my furbabe in tow, the place was darkly lit but filled with people. I was greeted by the guys inside, I returned the friendly greeting and proceeded to order. Not a hugh fan of beer, but slowly acclimating...I ordered a pour of the orange wine from Alsace, France. I asked the female bartender to select stemware not a mug. Bartender was nice and helpful. I was able to find a seat at a hightop counter next to the bar area to relax. This particular drink tasted familiar, as I have had it before, nonetheless it was refreshing and lovely. From observation, mostly guys were present, a sprinkle of females, and age ranges from young to mid age. A couple tv monitors, a pool table, booths and a cool bar. Wall with framed pics of goats! One third of the space is occupied by Biersal who cooks, prepares and table services the limited food menu. When my friend arrived he was famished and ordered the favs: curry wurst with fries and the chicken schnitzel sandwich. He devoured it all and liked it all. I wasn't too hungry and only tasted the fries. For a beer pub, it's among the nicest I've seen out here in San Diego. Wish they had more seating inside and outdoor seating. I got to check out this place on their grand opening night. There was a line to get in. We waited for about 15 min to get in and then there was a line to order beer. It was packed but their beer and food were worth the wait! Bock has 35 + beers on tap and their kitchen serves up delicious German bites such as pretzels, bratwursts, schnitzel and much more. My absolute favorite is Chicken schnitzel sandwich. The chicken was fried to perfection...tender, crispy and full of flavor. I liked the bratwurst as well. The portion was good for a reasonable price. Last night was also an Underberg party. I wasn't a huge fan when taking it as a shot but it's awesome when it's mixed with @mommenpop for a "Mommenberg". I've driven down this road numerous times and somehow never noticed this place. It's a nice little tucked away surprise. I appreciated that they don't pump the music super loud. It was easy to hear the person you are talking too. Also had nice lighting. Our server was very approachable and kind. The beer is amazing. The location is just a lot smaller than I though and for a Friday night it was very packed. Its hard to get a booth to sit in and even finding a place along the bar was difficult. People were lined up against the walls since there wasn't very much room to move around.
