Unlike a lot of classic old diners, the place has homemade food to match. My favorite patty melt, with a hand-formed not frozen burger, and butter-crisped rye. Although they default to American cheese, you can ask for swiss or cheddar. Great scrapple, cooked thin and crispy like a pancake, wonderful omelets. My mother has been taking me to Bob's Diner ever since I was four years old growing up in Roxborough. On the weekends, the diner's atmosphere reminds me of a big family get together. The staff is extremely friendly and accommodating, the noise level is quite loud, and there are a ton of people running around in a crammed space. None of which bothers me because I have such a big family! I've tried almost everything on their menu, from breakfast sandwiches to pancakes to scrapple, and I've never been disappointed. I've been coming to Bob's Diner in Roxborough for years. We first discovered it when my wife and I started dating and she lived in Mt. Airy, and it became the "usual" spot before or after a hike through Wissahickon Gorge. This "it never changes" greasy-spoon spot is like something out of a classic movie (or David Lynch's Americana Dream). Cash only. Tight quarters that haven't been updated since probably 1965. Lines out the door for breakfast on the weekends. Sassy waitresses. Colorful story-telling cashiers (a side note: has anyone seen our favorite Cookie lately?). Hard working line cooks in full view behind the counter slapping up piles of hash browns and bacon to die for (they get it crispy like I like - without burning it - and still so full of bacon-y flavor!). The coffee is great and they keep it coming. The few times we've been for dinner, it's like a ghost-town (almost like it's own doppleganger) and the next-door cemetery becomes more eerily apparent (or "shady" as my nephew likes to say) but the food is just as slamming (can't go wrong with yellow-gravy smothered hot turkey sandwiches and buttery mashed potatoes). For all intents and purposes this is probably a 4 (can any diner really reach a 5?) but it gets a 5 for character, atmosphere and "trapped in time"-ness. read more

Old fashioned non-nonsense diner of the old-school dining car variety. Good breakfast with butter generously slathered on the toast. When they say you can get the eggs any way you like, they mean poached too. They keep your coffee refilled so well you have to cry "Uncle" before you're bouncing off the walls. This is a nondescript little local diner in the Roxborough neighborhood. From the outside it screams vintage and in need of renovation. As you enter in, I was greeted warmly by a young gentleman who gave me free reign in my choice of seating area. I noticed that he is a man of many titles; host, server, busser, cashier, manager...oh what the heck, he seems to run the whole damn place! The interior is in need of a really good scrub down for this place to shine, and the windows are screaming "Please Wash Me!". Now speaking of food, it is typical diner food. We came for an early dinner, and most of the reviews were during breakfast time. The Appetizer Combo did not have any pub pickles nor was there any boneless wings (see pic). Taste was mediocre as to any deep fried, frozen food. The gravy over the Veal Cutlet was sparse and could use a little more. The Garlic Spinach was very delicious though. Chicken Salad Platter was good. Although I must say the Cole Slaw is really good. Broiled Salmon was over cooked but still edible. French Fries seems to look like they have been sitting on the side for awhile. When my server asked me if everything was ok, it was OK. Maybe I should have been here for breakfast instead. I used to frequent Bob's diner when I lived in the area, but haven't been back in years. I went today, and it's so much better than I even remember! You're greeted with a smile by every employee, and served promptly. The omelet was fluffy (as described on the menu) and stuffed with delicious, fresh vegetables. It is located next to a church, actually pretty much in the cemetery... but unfortunately the food is a bit too average. The parking isn't as bad as it looks for Roxborough, I went during busy Sunday breakfast time and street parking was open (most likely due to the cemetery right there). Service was quick but didn't lose quality, and the waiters and waitresses were funny. The only reason I gave 4 and not 5 stars was because of how the seating works - It can get very overwhelming because you do not put your name in, you wait in line and whoever is next in line gets the next table. I usually love this place. Been there dozens of times. I like the food. The menu options are plentiful. The prices are cheap. But I went there recently when they were not busy, on a Sunday around 2pm. And I was grossed out by the messiness.There were onion rings on the middle of the floor, and the bathrooms were filthy. I am guessing there were only 2 people working in the restaurant including the cook. There seemed to be only one guy responsible for serving tables, handling the register, and cleaning any messes. That means that no one checks on the state of the bathrooms or picks up the occasional onion ring on the floor. I would rather pay another 20-40% to have an extra person keeping the place tidy. I get eggs "Carl", (which are barely scrammbled, still runny), burnt homefries, crispy bacon, tea with lemon, and rye toast. Then I sit and enjoy the whole meal. Awful service. During the order taking I asked the waitress Mary Lou about the blueberry pancakes. She answered my question and I replied with I'll have that. I also told her I'd have a side of home fries. She then asked "is that all?" Of course I said yes thinking she meant will that complete your order as you hear often in restaurants. She asked meaning "you only want home fries". Because of this miscommunication she did not bring the pancakes and when I asked where they were, she made me feel as if I made the error and it was my fault. I never received an apology, nor was one hinted at. That was the last I saw/spoke to her. She clearly pawned our table off to another waitress because the other one brought the food, refilled the beverages, and brought the check. This was one of the worst displays of services I've encountered. If she had apologized and did not argue with me over the problem she would have gotten a tip. I wasn't even rude to her because mistakes happen, but don't make me feel like it was my fault. She should be bussing the tables and not serving them. read more

Pulled into Bob's Diner at approximately 8:30 pm on Saturday - November 10th (they were moping the floor and it was closing at 9:00 pm)...I was in town celebrating my wife's birthday as a surprise trip...I had asked my contact at the limo company that I was using over the weekend to take us to a real diner at the end of the day for dinner Saturday night...well Bob's did not let me or my wife down...even though we were the last and only customers the waitress at Bob's was really tired and we were still able to get incredible service and a great meal...I had steak and eggs with toast...my wife had a really big hamburger and we shared a side of I believe they call it 'pork roll'...it was all really great and it was my wife's first time to ever eat at a real diner...I give this establishment five stars - why...because I have been across this great country and have stayed in four and five star hotels on a regular basis....as I was on this trip...but there are so few places where the staff has a great attitude, the food is good, and you learn something about life in the process....I think the waitress will remember us...so I thank you Bob's for really showing us how the people of Philly and the Philly area are some of the best in the country... read more
