Yesterday was my first opportunity to eat at Bob's Bar-B-Q Pit. What a wonderfully flavored meal. I ordered the two item combo dinner with mac and cheese and coleslaw. The mac and cheese was delicious and the first thing I ate. The coleslaw had just the right amount of dressing. With the dinner combo, I got the try both the ribs and pulled pork. The meat fell right off the bone and was wonderfully flavored sweet and tangy. The pulled pork was also delicious as could be. In addition, I ordered some corn bread and got an Arnold Palmer. I literally do not understand how this place has this good of a rating. I went there to try it because I've been dying to find some good southern bbq, and being from Texas, I like to believe I've had a fair share. The only thing "Texas" about this place is when your dad makes a huge bbq and there is left overs to eat tomorrow. And your mama makes you microwave some for lunch the next day. Like Stephens review, I I have to say the best part are people, they were really nice it looks like a family-run establishment. But the barbecue missed the mark, the collard greens for okay but mediocre also and the cornbread... it didn't come from a southern kitchen. My friends and I agree that you have to manage your expectations for where you live and Tacoma is not known for amazing BBQ. If I want barbecue in the Tacoma / Fife area I'd go to warthog in fife and that's still only 3 starts. This place is, in a word, awful. Our food took 25 minutes. The mac and cheese and greens were good, but that doesn't make up for chicken that tasted like it was boiled, brisket cut too thin and completely void of flavor and the worst burnt ends on the planet. The sauce is sparce and that's okay because it's basically jazzed up ketchup. Someone needs to show these folks how to use a grill/smoker. It's really that bad. I gotta say I love BBQ. When I saw this little place in hilltop my naive mind though "how authentic" and I went right in. The inside had a no-frills decor that was fitting to a true BBQ restaurant and the staff took my order right away. I had the pulled pork sandwich and spicy chicken. The sandwich was great and enjoyed every bit of it. The chicken on the other hand was not what I expected. The sauce had a good burn to it but it was way too tangy for my taste and I simply couldn't finish it. Common sense should have dictated I steer clear of this place, but I had a restaurant.com gift certificate that was burning a hole in my pocket and I love BBQ so i figured I'd give this place a shot. The old parking cones sitting inside the 'kitchen" area, scraps of paper hanging from the walls, seating for 8 fully grown adults or 5 BBQ fanatics, old spice bottles lying around uncapped, it felt much less like a "dive" or a "hole in the wall" type of place and much more like a money laundering scheme gone wrong. Glad I got it to go... For the price point, the food is definitely not worth it. The ribs were tasty and tender but the sauce was oddly sweet and spicy.. just not for me i guess, but that's not my issue with the meal. The Brisket was horribly tough and dry, but the sauce was good which doesnt make a bit of difference when you're serving up beef jerky with some Stubb's slathered on it. you'd figure for a 15 dollar meal the portion sizes would be decent too. Flavor wise the bbq was very tasty, however the brisket was sliced to thin to my liking. Its not what I'm use to coming from Texas. The meat seem like it was sliced with a deli meat slicer it was so thin. The ribs were good but little bit tough in different parts of the rib. We hired Bob's BBQ pit to cater our holiday party. From the very first phone call they went above and beyond. On the day of the party they had the food ready on time, helped carry it to our car, and made sure we had everything we would need for a great party! The food was AMAZING, staff fought over who got to take leftovers home, and they are still talking about how good it was. Best chicken ever. But don't go here if you're hungry or low blood sugar. No one in front of me, no one else in the restaurant at all, and it took over fifteen minutes to get served two pieces of chicken and some greens(also good). I am hypoglycemic, had asked if it would take long or was it already cooked, and was told it wouldn't take long at all. The man behind the counter didn't start working on my order till ten minutes after I gave it to him. "What did you want again?" Not a single other customer there. Wouldn't serve me-after I paid and tipped, mind you- till I raised my voice. Homophobic? Something else? I don't know. But really poor service and excellent food. If you have a bunch of time to wait, might be a good choice. I am over the moon excited that I found a great BBQ place since I moved here from Texas. I've been eating at southern style BBQ places like this since I could walk and though there were very few things that were different then what I like I was so so impressed and even more excited that I live just down the road. Now, I thought for the price I could have been given a little more portion which is my only complaint not that I was cheated in any way I'm just used to getting a lot more for almost $25.00 for a single person. Where I was impressed was the flavor of the meat the wings were hands down mind blowing with Smokey flavor, I am actually upset I did not order it but my friend was kind enough to share. I did order the pound of ribs with two sides which were potato salad, greens and a sweet tea. I've got the hand it to Bob's the greens were perfect all I had to add was a little salt but that just my preference the potato salad was on the sweater side which is just how I like it. Now I loooove me some good ol' sweet tea and coming from a house hold that goes through at least a gallon a day I'm pretty picky. Now it is not your traditional sweet tea it had a certain flavor which I couldn't decide if it was the type of tea they use to make it or if it's a flavored sweetener but there is a little bit of a fruity taste to it and I absolutely love it. Now Bob's is not ascetically pleasing, and we dined in last night and it was hot hot hot inside but hey It has all the charm of a small hole in the wall neighborhood joint. And I don't want to end my review without talking about the service the staff was great very customer service friendly and asked each table that was sitting inside how their meal was and if they needed anything, I'm very excited to go back the next time I need some good BBQ and will definitely recommend to friends. read more
