I called in before I had my car towed to the repair shop for a engine malfunction. They confirmed the car arrived and we went over my Toyota Corolla issues. They ran diagnostics and let me know the items they found. I had known most of them but did not expect it to run in the tens of thousands. We planned on making initial repairs to gift the car to my daughter but we're contemplating if it was worth to do the repairs or just buy a different car. After talking about the cost and what it needed to get done, we decided to go forward with the repairs. They were willing to work with us which I really appreciated. Update review: Still my #1 car repair shop in SF!! And I will not be going anywhere else. Car started shaking and check engine light came out. I called Bob's to ask if I could come in and they said yes. They diagnosed my car and clearly communicated what was wrong and what needed to be fixed. (engine misfire - needed to replace engine coils). I also needed an oil change so I got that done as well. Dropped my car off at 12ish and picked it up that same day around 5! My truck broke down on the highway in San Francisco after visiting family. I live in Sacramento, being stranded I have no idea where to tow it to. After asking a family member, they recommended Bobs. This was the best decision I have made. Bob's was able to fit me in same day, throughly explained what was the cause and correction needed to repair my truck. After his electrical diagnosis, he found that the power train control module was going bad and caused the alternator to overcharge the system. Bob was able to get the powertrain control module ordered and programmed same day and got me back home to Sacramento late evening. Bob only charged me half of the diagnosis!! A honest, reliable and trusted mechanic is hard to find these days, I was not upsold on anything. They did notice some minor oil leaks but I don't consider that being upselling because the issue was noticeable which they wanted to make me aware. Unfortunately it was the transmission oil pan gasket. There was no pressure on the recommended service either. Due to the timing issue, I did not get it done as I was in a rush needing to go home. The best part was that they showed me what was found during the diagnosis process for reassurance and peace of mind. I got back home to Sacramento with peace of mind. Classic bait and switch used at Bob's Auto Service. I came by on Tuesday evening to get pricing on installing my shocks/struts for labor only. After checking with the manager and going on the computer to look up my vehicle. They said it would be $600 for 4 hours of labor at $150 per hour. I told them that I would return on Friday morning to leave my car and they said that was fine. I brought in my car on 9:30 am on Friday morning and let the manager know I came in and left my car with them. I received a call later that morning and was told that it would be 5 hours of labor at $750. I let them know that they said it would only be 4 hours of labor on Tuesday and the reason was for 2 hours for the front and 3 hours for the rear. They also said I needed 2 new tires in the front because they are bald. This is false because I went to America's Tire mid last month and they checked all of the tread on my tires and they said they were in good tread. I didn't appreciate that they wanted to add onto the invoice for tires which were not needed at all. I go in to pick up my car later in the afternoon and again asked why an extra hour of labor was charged. They said that they didn't have the VIN # to look up when I went in on Tuesday. I provided all of my vehicle info, make, model and type of drivetrain. They should have asked me for the VIN # if they needed it and I would have given. I've called about 5 other auto repair shops for pricing on the install of shocks/struts and none of them asked for a VIN #. Unfortunately, this will be the first and last time at Bob's Auto. read more

I have been really hesitant to find a new mechanic since I moved to the city, especially because I always feel like i get taken advantage of since I do not know much about cars. Needless to say, my gut was right. I do not know if it is a tactic of theirs or coincidental but the lady working the phone is super differcult to understand. I called the day before to ask about making an appointment and to get pricing which seemed fair ($80 for oil change & $250 for Ac Refresh) based on my minor research, so I figured I'd try it out since it's a close walk from my place. I also had a noise coming from the back of my car so I decided to do a diagnostic check when I brought it In. Sure enough 2 hours later they call me to tell me that there is a leak in my AC and told me how much it would be to fix it ($350). Like I said the lady on the phone was SUPER difficult to understand, so since I was close I just decided to walk over to talk in person. Still there was a bit of a language barrier and she did not do a good job of explaining anything. I think she was trying to translate for the mechanic who also did not speak great english. Any questions I asked to clarify she just kept pointing to the paper and repeating the same thing. Anyway they said that they would repair the Ac then do the oil change. Then a couple hours later they call me saying the AC is done and something about needing to do the oil change but they are not sure if it will fix the noise coming from my car. I agreed and said sure that's fine just do the oil change. She was super unclear on the phone, so I thought she meant that they still just needed to do the oil change after the diagnostic check. Then when I come to pick up my car she was going over my bill and it was $250 more than what we discussed when I came in person. She said I approved using other type of oil over the phone when she called. She said NOTHING about it being an Extra $250 And my car is still making the noise!! Which I know she said might not fix it, but there was hardly even any verdict from the diagnostic check either. All they said it was coming from the back of the car which I already knew. I would not recommend this place unless you are coming in for something really simple and even then I would only go in person for any communication. I ended up spending over $1000 when I was initially expecting to pay $480. At the end of the day, I so was pissed because since I technically authorized the everything, there was nothing I could do. I just bit my tongue from screaming at the lady. I understand not everyone's first language is english, but they need to hire someone that can clearly explain what is going on to the customer. read more

I'm not the brightest person when it comes to car issues. About 2 weeks ago, my car notified me that one of my tires were low on air. I was like eh, it can wait.. since it was in the 20s for PSI while the others were in the 30s. Fast forward to yesterday morning, my PSI was at 17 all of a sudden and others were at 30. I was like hm, maybe I will as CK to help me put air in my tires after work. When I get into my car after work, my tires were now at 15 PSI! I call CK and I ask him to help me put air in my car. He says it sounds like a nail was on my tire and I didn't realize to check. While I wait outside for him, I go check and lo and behold - there's a nail in my car! This was after work, so most places were getting ready to close. I bust out my handy dandy yelp page and look for a place nearby that can help me. Had my oil changed at this location. With all the great reviews, I thought it would be a no brainer to bring my car here. However, when I got my car back, I noticed several abrasion marks on the engine covers. In addition, there were two indentation on the door entry sill. It makes me wonder what was happening to my car while I was away. My car came back worse than when I took it in. I would not recommend this business based on how my pride and joy vehicle was treated. BEWARE OF SCAMMER. We came to get a screw removed from a tire. Before signing any paperwork or giving us an estimate, an employee started working on the tire (my partner was watching him) while I was speaking with the owner. He pulled the screw, which had not punctured through the tire, and then punctured the sidewall of the tire with the repair tool. Then the owner and I came over and he demanded we buy a new tire. Thankfully I realized they were trying to scam me and refused. After a fair amount of arguing, they gave up and put a temporary patch in the tire. The employee who punctured the tire apologized and said "sorry my boss just wants money". I think that speaks for itself. Avoid this shop if you can, as they will likely try to scam you too. read more
