I had no idea that this place was so close to my Father in law's home. The only reason I know about Bobby Mackey's is Ghost Adventure's, so yea, I'm part of THAT crowd. My original thought was just to stop and grab a few pictures of the outside. I didn't REALLY need to go inside. (YES, YES I DID). I got there about an hour before the first tour started, so the Husbeast and I enjoyed a little country Karaoke as I walked around and took photos. It's exactly what a Honky Tonk looks like (And smells like: Liquor, Beer, Sweat and Cigarette smoke). There were a couple of regulars playing pool and a few others singing, The guys and gals line dancing to 'Footloose' made me grin. Mark was our tour guide and he is a Gem. He has the history of the place down to a good patter. It's sad about the recent-ish mudslide on the other side of the hill. The basement is a "special" place. Even if you don't believe in ghosts or demonic things, please surround yourself with white light and protection. I'm not saying it's related but I did end up with a huge bruise on my stomach and 2 days after I got home to FLA I ended up in the ER with Blood pressure Issues. Just sayin. It's not a place to fool around with. There've been too many folks who have done TOO MANY stupid things there without knowing what they're engaging with. My own personal experiences were: I saw a female shape to the right, when you're facing looking into the well room, it had a very victorian style silouhette. I felt a cold spot as we entered into the room of faces. There was something touching me in the jail cell, I felt, rather than heard voices in there. In the spot between the stairway to heaven, and the pit to hell, I felt a pain in my stomach. I ended up with a large bruise on my belly. May not be connected, but who knows. The husbeast, who's an absolute null, and skeptic, felt slightly dizzy in the jail cell, and saw "something" off the the left, near the mechanical bull in the basement. Would I come back? Yes. Probably even to drink and dance. It was a cool place. read more

So, this place is exactly as you'd expect it - so just know what you're heading into. It has country line dancing, pool tables, a mechanical bull and a variety of other games and attractions to keep you occupied. The staff was pretty friendly, and the drinks are cheap. And for anyone that's been living under a rock, it's all supposed to house an actually portal to Hell. Apparently this is located in the basement, off limits to customers. There are supposed to be other hot spots throughout the building for paranormal activity, including the men's bathroom, but I didn't experience anything out of the ordinary. read more

Went here to celebrate my last weekend in my 30's. It was an experience! A lot bigger on the inside then I would have expected. Plenty of tables to sit at, mechanical bull to ride, or watch others ride! In between Bobby Mackey's sets there was line dancing. His music was nothing to write home about, he did a few covers which I enjoyed. Definitely preferred the in between music. I also have to give it up for the customers and bar staff, I accidentally left my phone in the restroom, and went back to grab it 5 minutes or less later, alas it wasn't there. I checked with the bar and someone had already turned it in. It's nice that there's still decent people in the world! The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because you can smoke inside, not a fan of that. read more

I've been wanting to check out this place for years. My boyfriend's friend was having a party on a Friday night and invited us. What a great opportunity! FYI, there is no cover charge until 10:00 p.m.($10.00 a person) on Saturdays there is a cover charge. If you want to do the ghost tour it is $10.00 a person. There is also a gift shop in the bar. Stepped in and was in awe with all the nostalgia around me. It is definitely all original décor, spacious with plenty of seating, pool tables ($1.25), huge bar (only accepts cash, however there is an ATM in the facility), mechanical bull you can ride for $6.00, dancing, live bands, karaoke and more! The bartenders are pretty quick and very friendly. Not a lot of beer selections (no craft beers), but very reasonable in prcing. My boyfriend and I sat at the tables and had a couple of drinks, mingled with his friends and shot some pool. It is very laid back and I really enjoyed myself! I definitely want to return. This was pretty much exactly the experience I was looking for during my time in Kentucky. Thanks Yelp for the discount! Check in on Yelp and the cover charge is only $2. This place is CASH ONLY for everything, including the bar, so be prepared! They do have an ATM if necessary. We didn't do the ghost tour, so no comments on that. The place is definitely old and dilapidated as others have said, but that totally adds to its charm. I didn't see anything that made me feel unsafe (although yes, there was one old man who made inappropriate sounds at my friend when she walked by). Based on other reviews, I was nervous to use the bathroom, but it was well-lit and clean. Mixed drinks are only $4.50, pool is $1, and the mechanical bull is $6. DO NOT get there right when they open at 7:30, or anytime near that. There was no music or anything until about 8:45 or 9:00. It was just awkward silence. We passed the time by playing pool. Then they had about an hour of karaoke, which we didn't participate in but enjoyed watching. There was about 15 minutes of line dancing, which was the highlight of my night, and Bobby Mackey comes on at 10. I had been hoping for more line dancing, but we had to leave at 10:30 and everyone was still just sitting and watching. I think we just came too early. One of my favorite bars in Cincinnati. This place has the most genuine feel of any place around. It is a poorly lit bar with pool, a mechanical bull, and line dancing. Not to mention Bobby Mackey himself sings live every weekend! While you will smell like cigarettes upon your departure it just adds to the feel of this authentic country bar. My personal favorite part is the line dancing. Watching the regulars perform dance after dance is quite impressive. I try to join in after watching and by the end of the song you are usually a pro. I had my reception here on June 27th. I think I am the first person to do this out of my circle of friends but I know others have had receptions there as well. I cannot say enough about Denise and Bobby and the helpfulness of their staff. It's a honky tonk bar and for me it was perfect. I wanted a reception where people could cut loose, ride a mechanical bull, and catch a ghost tour if they felt brave:) Denise was so accommodating with letting us come in and set up and with the break down (she and Matt were hands on the whole time- so nice!). We purchased bar tickets and were able to bring in our own food (Eli's BBQ- which is delicious). The bar opens to the public and it was not a problem- everyone was so nice (I had a very diverse reception crowd and I have had several reports of how friendly non-wedding patrons were). It is a bar that allows smoking but it wasn't overwhelming. Denise and her crew checked in with me and my family and were so attentive and made sure everyone had a good time. They even allowed us to put a green screen up behind the bull ! Also, Bobby and his band sounded great- he played Silver Wings and I swayed the night away. If you are looking for a different, sweet, country party with genuine kind people who care about you having a great reception- I recommend Bobby Mackey's Honky Tonk. Loved it, fun place for anybody but it's basically honky tonk cowboy bar, but you'll see all kinds of ppl in here. The ghost tour was great, I'm a huge fan of ghost adventures so it wouldn't have taken much anyway. I can see how this joint is a tad overhyped, but the atmosphere in the bar makes up for anything you think you might be missing. I am sad that they have NO DRAFT BEER and it's only bottles, and those bottles are basically only domestic trash. Which is hardly beer at all, it's just carbonated water, it's almost like soda. But regardless, you'll be glad to grab a bottle of bud and grab a table and listen to the band or talk to your friends. read more

For the Love of Country, get back to your roots and go to Bobby Mackey's! For almost a year now, Carrie L. and I have been talking about 2 things; ghost hunts and our love for the country. So, when her birthday rolled around this past weekend, it was only natural to plan the party around the supernatural with a twist of twang. What better way to do this than to get the gang together at Bobby Mackey's Music World for some spirits AND spirits? Of course, as any over-prepared, OCD, good friend would do before any celebration, I launched a thorough investigation in to the history of this melodic watering hole. (Ensuring legitimacy of the theme is key for any party planner.) Um... wow! It passed with flying colors! And, what I love most is that the wonderful folks at this haunted hoedown not only embrace it, they invite you to be a part of it! Our first drink in, they invited the Ladies and Gents to stop in to the gift shop for a brief behind the scenes tour! That's right. I said it. There is a gift shop on the premises. In fact, while you're ordering a $3 bottle of hops and barley of your choice or a $4 well drink, this peculiar 'gift shop in a bar' sits directly behind you. I strongly encourage a game plan for this adventure. We chose to wait until we were at least 3 deep before crossing in to that shop of horrors. Ya know.. for liquid courage and all! We opted not to participate in the $10 tour this time. But, we do fully plan on coming back for the overnight ghost hunt they host about once a month. Paying money to be posessed... can I say yes? Upon arrival, we paid out $5 cover, parked ourselves in the dance floor area and people watched our way in that 'peaceful and easy feelin'. Kareoke was in full swing at the DJ booth, and so were some of the patrons on the dance floor. The mechanical bull was operating with both horns over in the game area. I've never had the pleasure of a mechanical bull experience with a pool game commencing to my right and darts on my left, but the couple double-saddling that electronic beast seemed to enjoy it. They were flashing smiles and flailing their arms around with what could only be sheer joy! I suppose it could have been terror, but it was difficult to accurately interpret facial expressions through the fog. This is a 'smoking friendly' establishment Yelpers. Pack a gas mask and goggles. And well, hey, if you're scared of ghosts, no worries, the smoke disguises them. Needless to say, despite the smoke, we found the unique, obscure experience my group so often seeks. The drinks were cold, the entertainment was top notch and we'll be looking back laughing (and coughing) about our evening for some time to come. read more

Went with a colleague who is into ghosts and spirits. Felt like I was on the set of a late night made for TV movie. Definitely REAL people and fun if you don't like upscale places. They had line dancing, karaoke, live singing from Mr. Bobby Mackey himself and just a great down to Earth atmosphere that you can probably find nowhere else in the US. This is what those Southern movies try to imitate. This place used to be a regular bar spot for my group of friends. It's basically a haunted honky tonk less than 10 minutes from downtown. The gravel parking lot is littered in glass and the place is full of smoke to where my hair and clothes reek the next day of cigarettes, but it's the only place that I know of to go line dancing and it's certainly a good place to throw back some whiskey and beer and people watch. Avoid on karaoke night to save your ears from bleeding and if you want to get much dancing in. Take the haunted tour, too. It's a unique and special kind of place. I've never been to Gilley's, but I've been to Bobby Mackey's. Having the gift of this bar nearby is a real treat. I've been to Bobby's on and off over the years, and I've never been disappointed. Whether for music, hosts, line dancing, or bull riding, come on out and enjoy this favorite "haunt" of mine. On the weekends during the school year it can be pretty full on the weekends with college kids, but it's okay, they're usually well behaved. You won't be out of place in boots and a hat, though we could debate whether a ball cap or a Stetson is more appropriate (I say, Stetson). Went to Bobby Mackey's for the first time this weekend with a group of friends. Got there early to find a good place to sit to see the Danny Frazier Band, then Bobby Mackey's & His Best Damn Band. Servers were attentive and quick, and the drink prices were very reasonable ($3 Coors Light bottles, thank you very much!). The bands were very good, and they played both kinds of music....country AND Western! In between the bands, a DJ played for the line-dancing crowd. For $6, I gave the mechanical bull a try and thankfully didn't kill myself. There are also several pool tables and ghost tours available. This place is different, but in a good way. It's not a typical "night club." I had a great time here, and will be back again soon. read more

I went to Bobby Mackey's for the first time last Saturday. This place is a trip, for sure - think Roadhouse meets a haunted house, and you've got Bobby Mackey's. It's a honky tonk, filled with honky tonk things - live country music, mechanical bull riding, lots of line dancing, smoking inside- then add a ghost tour. The ghost tour consisted of a tour of the basement of the bar - which was pretty creepy. The tour guide, an employee of Bobby Mackey's for several years - was really into leading the tour, and gave us lots of good information. I'm generally not a huge country music fan (at least, not the new stuff), but I love seeing a live band, and Bobby performed two sets that night. It was also a lot of fun watching people line dance - who knew there were so many different line dances? - and ride the mechanical bull. People were very friendly (got a few drinks bought for us) - and we got to meet Bobby Mackey himself, who was charming and kind. All in all, it was a really fun way to spend a Saturday night. read more

There is even a series of films about to be created locally, spotlighting the history of this seedy bar and music venue. I'm sure the mechanical bull pulls in a lot of people too but it's the ego of Bobby Mackey that runs the place. The bull was quiet last time I visited and there wasn't a live band (much to my relief). We went for a laugh and found cheap cans of beer and a little bit of culture shock. I'm sure I'll end up at this bar again but all novelty aside it's not my favorite place to visit. I felt like an interloper and Wilder is sort of like Dayton, KY on roids. For those who love the place, don't forget the 30th anniversary is this September. It's kind of scary to realize this place has been open since right before my birth. read more

My two friends and I paid ten dollars each for the ghost tour. As it began one of my friends stated she felt the first room on the left calling to her. She left the group and went to that room. She was speaking to something while standing in complete darkness. She wasn't acting herself and we had to physically remove her. The response by staff was so unprofessional. All they said was if you dont get her out we are going to call the cops. I dont know what was happening to my friend but it was scary as hell. I'll never go back based on staff having no plan of action for something like this happening. They advertise paranormal activity yet when something happens, they want to call the cops. read more

Been here many times...Bobby Mackey's Music World in Wilder. Famous for being haunted, I feel uneasy everytime I frequent this establishment. It feels like someone is watching me wherever I go. That's okay, I come to drink- Jack Daniels and Jim Beam will help ease the tension. It's your typical honky-tonk...smoke filled, beer in your hand, playing country music (with Bobby Mackey and the Big Mack Band on Saturdays), and a mechanical bull to go along with it. The billiards tables and the punching bag game are pretty cool- my group always spends a lot of time (and money) on these. It's a fun time regardless if you're drinking or not. If you choose not to drink, I'm not sure what's more scary: the paranormal or fat women in tank tops and tube tops riding the bull. My experience at Bobby Mackey's was fun. The music was actually pretty solid, I'm not a country fan but I like that they had original acts instead of frequent Northern Kentucky bars which feature a cover artist or a DJ. When I arrived I didn't know about the cover, which was mildly annoying and they do not take credit cards which was also annoying. The beer is bottle only, the selection is limited, and the mixed drinks weren't strong pours. The bull was amusing, some people got thrown very early and others lasted well longer than I would have guessed. The space is very large and allows for the musical acts and the bull to go on simultaneously without much interruption. I was able to go on a mini version of their ghost tour as a perk of visiting with my yelp friends. This was a pretty interesting preview of the whole tour. The whole tour costs $25 but if the preview i saw is an indication it contained a pretty interesting view of the history of the building. It was formerly a slaughterhouse, casino, and mob hangout with what was once the worlds largest whorehouse just down the street. The history was very interesting which was nice because the ghost thing doesn't do it for me. It would be a lot of fun to take someone and scare them with loud noises or a quick poke to the side. TLDR: If you like country music then this would be a good place to see some acts, the bull is amusing. The beer selection and bar service is kind of weak and the cover was an unpleasant surprise. read more

While country is not my style of music, I can appreciate a great band and singer. Bobby and the Big Mack Band deliver every time! This venue is also 18 and up, so good for you young-ens who need a place to hang out on the weekend. The Weekend Ghost Tour The tour is $10 and lasts about 30 mins. We were given a tour by the maintenance man, who did not believe the place was haunted. He was nice but my expectation was to go on a tour with the possibility of seeing something. His tour made me believe I would see nothing, and that is exactly what I saw. I'm the kind of person who watches a scary movie and subsequently avoids the basement for 2 weeks, so you can imagine how the tour went. I was happy that I got to see the places rather than the tour itself. The Bar The bar is why I gave them this rating. The staff were friendly, expect for the male bartender. When you walk into a place and you can't tell if you're going to be raped or hate-crimed, or a combo of both, its not a place you every want to visit again or would recommend. Within the first 15 minutes of my arrival, I had a man tell me he would be gentle with me and another man hump the air in my direction and loudly proclaimed, 'yee-haw' after slamming his hand on the table. You can't make this shit up! I did not expect it and I will never appreciate that behavior. Worse than the sexual advances were the death stares. I can handle creepy, but my sense of security was compromised. I understand that this place isn't crawling with South Asians, and I might have been something new to look at, but no MuthaF***** likes to be looked at like that. This place is exactly all the negative stereotypes of a Honky Tonk bar. Stick to shots, beer, and wine. Nothing that requires mixing. I paid $4 a glass for coke and whiskey, minus the whiskey. It wasn't just me and my sister who had bad experiences. Anyone who was there for just the tour did not stay long. Bottomline: If you are a big fan of the ghost hunting shows, then you know this place. Go for the tour and maybe a drink. DO NOT LINGER. This is clearly a local bar, and they do not like non-locals. Great time celebrating our daughters 21st birthday. Big group so we contacted them in advance & let them know we were coming. They offered us a reserved area & allowed us to bring in food & a cake to celebrate. Bobby was awesome! We got to meet him & he took time to take photos w a bunch of us. The guy running the bull ride gave her a one on one training before she rode & it truly made her experience an awesome one. Staff was very friendly & took great care of us. No ghost activity this time but always enjoy our visits there. It's become a family 21st birthday attraction. A fire hazard. Major structural problems. Building is sliding down the hill. Dripping black moldy roof debris inside on over the dance floor. Electrical boxes showing scorch mark while water drips on them. Not haunted. All trumped up stories by the mackeys. Nasty. Toxic. Place appears to have not been cleaned in 20 years...that is being generous. How this place has not been condemned...guessing a fire marshal or health inspector have some greasy palms. Dangerous place based on poor building management not because of ghosts. read more

So, we went strictly for the paranormal experience and we are not country music lovers... On arrival to the place it is a building that looks ready to fall. I can't believe it is safe to have all those people packed in there stomping and banging around on the dance floors. It is a non-descript building with multiple additions and a sign on each side with the name on it. The parking lot is on either side of the building and is patchy with gravel, paved, and disintegrating portions of both. Make sure you are in the pickup or you will bottom out a few times. The police were there with EMS with a crowd around a "local" who had too much to drink. When we went in the girls at the register acres like the police and ambulance out front were common and the "oh, that's just so and so..." At the front register we were met with 2 girls with attitudes. But looking at the crowd they needed them to survive the nights here. They' have a printed hand print where you are required to put your hand so they can stamp the back with bar name after you pay the cover charge. On entering the place it is packed solid and you can't see much though the smoke. We were directed to a little corner with the gift shop counter and met up with the tour guide, paid our additional $10 for the basement tour. We went around back and outside to the basement entrance and on entering you really want to know how the building is still standing. The walls are crumbling brick and concrete block. This is where they shoot the beer bottles down shoots and into 55 gallon drums all night. There are about 8-10 drums full already. There is "the wall of faces" which is water seeping through the decaying concrete in different formations, The dressing rooms of former performers with a red light on to add mystery with dying rose in a vase. "Hells Gate" is a hole in the floor that is falling in. It is supposed to be in the slaughter house room where they hung and bled the cows. It is said to empty into the river but is now capped to keep the river from flooding the basement. I took lots of pictures. I paid $15 to be able to and I was going to get my $ worth. After the tour we went back to grab a souvenir t-shirt and the woman that runs the ghost tours was there counting money and ignoring us with our credit card out and discussing which shirt we wanted... She never made eye contact and she shut off the light and walked away. When we asked about a shirt she said the money's been counted and it is too late. She kept walking... So, if you are up for wasting some time, some money, like smelling like an ash tray, and seeing the decay of an old honey-tonk this place is for you! This place was on my bucket list and although after seeing it on tv it was still cool I was expecting a eerie feeling which I get easy and that didn't happen even after doing the basement tour and seen the well. If you are going for the paranormal unless your doing an over night thing in the middle of night save your money. Went also because Robyn lacy was playing and that was great as always. This is the last of the true honky-tonk bars around... a true country bar. The music, the vibe and the mechanical bull all lend to the great atmosphere. As a musician, it's a bold move to call your band the 'best damn band', but let me tell you, these guys can play! They're the true legends of the local scene and it's an honor to watch them. Bobby's voice is as great as ever and the place eats it up. The smoke, lack of food and limited alcohol selection are the only reasons I didn't give it 5 stars.
