I've been passing this store for a few years and wasn't sure if it was still in business. I decided to finally check it out and am so glad that I did! This store, attached to an auto repair shop, is liking stepping back in time! Although small, this nostalgic candy and toy shop is packed with retro items of a different generation. Too bad the prices don't reflect the past, but that's ok! The man at the front who helped me was friendly and not pushy, which I appreciate. The time I visited they were hanging two holiday stars and an electrician was doing some work. Way too crowded. Can't imagine many shoppers here at once. I kept being asked to move. Move where? There's nowhere to go. The proprietors are very friendly, gave me some popcorn and told me the story. Had the store been much bigger, I would happily drive in from Suffolk County. Just met the original owners son JOHN, who was so helpful and obviously passionate about retro toys and candies and so hard to imagine that this was one of the first grab and go convenience store/gas station repair shops on Long Island as he explained it to me. Looking through the assortment of toys and games. It was like I was reliving my childhood during the 1970s and I found some really nice gift options for my girlfriend's daughter. I will definitely be back here if for no other reason then to wax nostalgic! As soon as I opened the door to Bobb Howard's General Store this afternoon, I was transported back to the good ol' days on the island when I was a chubby kid ( actually still am both, chubby and a kid) who loved being around and working in the family candy stores in Baldwin and Westbury. I was greeted by this very cheerful and laid back gentleman named Ronnie who welcomed me as a first timer and introduced me to the rich 71 year history and metamorphosis of this business as he gave some samples of the dark chocolate kisses ( Yes! YEs!! YES!!!) and dark chocolate covered pecans. I think I just created and started speaking a new language as I closed my eyes and bit into the rich, creamy and melt in my mouth chocolate. Bobb's is a very clean, bright and well organized store with cute little blue baskets by the door to pick up and fill up any and every candy one can remember from the 50's to Y2K from mints to gum to candy corn to chocolate coins to jujubes to Yoo Hoo bars and Hershey bars. I have barely scratched the surface with these references.Love the posters and the signs from that era that complement the candy. The store also has an awesome toy collection from the good old says. Great prices too. This is a place where you would need a good three hours to go through and enjoy everything. Ronnie also mentioned that the adjoining auto repair shop was also his and they had a huge following as an honest business. Great vibe! Great set up! Just had my rear brakes done at Bobb Howards. I've been going there for over 15 years. They are honest, polite and always helpful with any questions about cars. It is also a nostalgic candy store with candy from the 50's and 60's and some toys you just don't see anymore. When you walk in you will feel like you went back in time like the 50's Prime Time Cafe in Disney's Hollywood Studios. My friends and I were just riding around the town and a friend said, "yo let's go get some candies and stuff. They might have cool jawbreakers or something". I came here for the first time yesterday, and I was so happy at the variety of nostalgic candies. I found lots of ones I used to eat when I was a kid, and picked up a few for my mom! The owner is incredibly sweet, and he spoke about some of the candies I was buying for my mom that I had no clue about. Also for it being my first time visiting the store my boyfriend, and I were given some paddleballs, pins, and bookmarks! I was having such a bad day, and that truly made me cheer up. Wow what a wonderful place to relive your childhood memory!! we were just looking for some candy to decorate our cake pops with and as we were searching for a good candy store, Bobb Howard came up and we knew we can't pass this on. First things first- Bobb Howard's General store is super easy to miss, it's on Lakeville Rd, it's easy to miss because it is attached to an auto mechanic shop. If you drive too fast, you'll definitely miss it because the store is not big and there's no giant signs pointing you to it. Just follow your GPS and you'll be fine! You would think a store like this would be dark, filthy and antiquish but not Bobb Howard's, the place is very well maintained, it's clean, bright and everything well polished, you can tell the owner put a lot of hard work into maintaining the place and of course the candy! The place is not big, probably the size of a small bedroom BUT that doesn't mean their inventory is lacking! My first impression walking in was OMG, THEY GOT THAT? I HAD IT WHEN I WAS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. I can't tell you how much fun stuff I found in the store but my greatest finds were definitely the classic coke bottles, Cry Baby Tears, Sour power straws- Pink Lemonade flavor and Chocolate Cigarette. There were also a lot of old school toys and collectibles such as cereal bobble head wobbler, garbage pail kids cards, Felix the Cat and Popeye collectibles and how can I can't forget about the good old classic coke/Pepsi signs. When we went to pay for our stuff, Ronnie (the super friendly store owner I believe) asked us if this was the first time we came to the shop and we said yes, and he said then I got a little present for you both, he went to the back and got two paddle ball rackets for us. He asked us to join the mailing list and they'll send us a little present on the month of us birthday! how cool!! Price: Most loose candies are priced at around $.25 to $1.50 per piece, which is not bad consider how hard it is to find some of these candies. Overall: A place I will come back and visit every once in a while because they restock their items and I can't wait to discover more new toys and candies from this shop!!! They get four stars because Ive been going here for years and the owners are truly honest people. I drive a really old car but my mom mostly kept it in the garage and serviced it timely so it was in great shape. I brought it in for regular servicing because I wanted it to last. For years no problems but then I noticed a pattern. I'd bring it in, no problem, followed by a major ticket repair between 4 and $700 within a short period of time. Bring it in again for an oil check, no problems, followed by a major ticket repair between 4 and $700 within a short period of time. Third time I thought ok there is something wrong here I know it's not the owner. The mechanic told me I needed to replace the entire exhaust system, Mike, who's a nice honest guy, said I dont recommend spending $2000 on an old car for a new exhaust and it's due for inspection, you may want to junk it. I called my guy friend because it just didnt feel right that this kept happening. Ive dealt with this before where I was taken advantage of bc I dont know enough about cars. I took it to my friend's mechanic, cost me $250 to get the one piece welded for the exhaust and some new belts since there was an oil issue. I asked if the exhaust leak seemed natural and he said yes it was definitely from rust but this piece commonly rusts and you don't need a whole new exhaust, just the flex pipe welded. Which I now have. It passed inspection, Im still driving it. I cant say what's going on but third times a charm. I expect things to go wrong with an old car, even one kept up but it just didnt feel right that it kept happening after I brought it in for routine checks. I can't say the mechanic team took advantage but I became uncomfortable with the pattern. Owners are super honest, I mean to a fault so it's not them. And maybe it was just a coincidence and the exhaust was a difference of ability or opinion, I'll never know. The atmosphere is great, the candy and nostalgia are fantastic but I have a new mechanic. read more

Mary Janes, Jawbreakers, Oh Henry's, candy cigarettes, rock candy, dots, candy buttons, licorice laces, jujubees and anything else you can think of all at amazingly Low prices! 35 cents for Mary Janes. 35-65 cents for the smaller candies and up to $1 and change for the bigger candies. Lots of little collectible items like Betty Boop and Gumby. The workers are very nice and knowledgeable about the candy. You can ask them what candy was made in the 30's and they will give you a list of every candy made during that time period. It was really interesting and fun. Upon leaving I was given a paddle ball toy and a bag of popcorn. So glad I went here, my candy train is going to be awesome with all of the amazing candies I got here! read more

I was driving down Lakeville Rd when I saw a little store beside a car service shop that advertised- "We Sell Old Toys and Candy!". Obviously as a retro lover and pin up girl, I just had to stop in. The store is tiny, but I could have spent hours looking over every little thing they had! If you're looking for a time warp- look no further! They're got all the retro candies you could remember, trading cards, toys, knick knacks and bric a brac. A working vintage popcorn machine (like no regular popcorn machine you might be thinking of) and a vintage Coca Cola cooler await your fancy. The music sets the mood, as do the vintage signs they have hanging all around. This shop brings back so many memories for anyone who was a child up until the mid 90s. Other kids and kids at heart will certainly have a blast picking candies and looking at toys. But walking down memory lane is for those of us who remember eating Long Boys and Sugar Daddies, while marveling at how a Slinky or the Magnetic Mustache Man worked. And of course, the service was lovely and personable. I left with some Kits Banana flavored taffy and a Cracker Jack box. Score. What a cool little candy store. Kinda easy to miss as its on the same property as the auto shop right next to it. Woulda missed it if it wasn't for its attractive storefront. Unfortunately, it is unwelcoming to children and the owner/attendant(s) bristle and frown when children come in to explore and try out the small toys displayed in baskets at child eye level. My two children are not rough nor disrespectful and they were just trying out the different small toys. The man there snidely told me "It's not a playground" and scolded my children for exploring and touching toys. I had been planning on treating my kids and buying them something but decided against making a purchase after being put off. This was not the first time we've experienced an unwelcome vibe from this store. Over the last five years, we've been there about 6 or 7 times to redeem birthday postcards and it's always a similar negative feeling there. I keep returning because I keep hoping it will be different because I love nostalgia and I love the idea of the store. Too bad. I gave them enough chances. Also, the air and all surfaces are toxic from the connected adjacent auto body shop: it smells like exhaust, oil, grease and carbon monoxide. Profit margins on the items near the front counter, which were accompanied by zero nostalgia for me, are substantial - but I'm all for supporting this establishment, especially when it comes to difficult-to-source offerings. Beware, as your corny joke may ring true in some instances, as some candy along the walls was truly old (all Zagnut & Abba Zabba bars had disappointingly expired). The two folks (presumably Bobb & his wife, who I assume run the adjacent auto shop of the same name) were kind and generous, doling out the free popcorn bags (and first-timer-only bookmarks, flyers, and paddleboard games) with enthusiastic smiles, chuckling as I failed to operate the machine as deftly as my younger brother. Ultimately, a great spot for a single visit, scoop-up-everything-that-intrigues-you $20.25 purchase (still kinda steep for a one-off). As of night 1, a good part of my purchase has been fraught with cloying letdowns with ingredients questionable for contemporary consumers: the marshmallow cone was simply disgusting, the (Brach's) sundaes neapolitan coconut tough to eat (or enjoy), the kits banana sticky, the banana splits sticky, the squirrel nut zippers appallingly edible, the Candy Farm neapolitan 3 color coconut bar intensely textural (doesn't make sense, I know), Long Boys Coconuts was the sole tasty item from the wall...the Idaho Spud (counter-bound) emerged the clear winner. You know that when you walk into Bobb Howard's , you are treated with such warmth and respect . I would not trust my car to anyone else expect for Ronnie and Eileen's team . And if anything is ever missed , which never happens , because they give such perfect work , they are there immediately to make it even better yet .
