My husband and I drove from Chicago to Missouri for the new year and we dined in here because Black Bear Diner was packed. We were greeted by the kind host and seated. Our waitress came to take our order and after that, she told us it would take long because they only had one cook, I wish she would have told us that before taking our orders because the wait took extremely long and we were falling asleep. By the time our good got there we noticed she forgot the toast my husband ordered and I tried to flag her down but my husband told me to forget because it might take long again and we were both hungry and didn't want to wait anymore. The service wasn't that great and the wait was even more disappointing. I think all customers should be greeted with utensils and water as soon as we are seated. I don't like the fact we have to ask for these things when they are things that most restaurants already serve you as soon as you are seated. The food was ok. I don't think restaurants should be open if there is only one cook because that's a lot of pressure for one cook to handle and hungry customers don't really like to wait so long for their food. read more

Came back. And it wasn't a fluke. Still had great seating, not too busy. The food came out relatively quick. It was delicious as the last time, and we were all full and satisfied. The customer service was mainly the highlight though, a great server was attentive and had great personality, didn't hurry us out the door either which I really appreciate. I noticed they have hat and coat racks on the booths! This is super innovative and cool. Very useful and adds nostalgia. Which is crème. The gift shop parts are novelty and sweets. Sunday breakfast around 9 and it was not packed! We walked in and got to sit down right away! Our server was polite and made sure our drinks were always taken care of! Wait time for food was not long at all. We had a party of 3 and only needed to wait maybe 15 minuets which was not bad at all. When the meals came out I thought mine was perfect! The others at the table got hash browns but said they were not done fully. I'm sure if they were on another minute or two it would have been perfect. The steak someone got was perfect. I ordered a grilled cheese, half cup of soup, side of dressing, and a banana bread. I know the banana bread is good because I've had it many times before. The half cup soup is good but very small. I expected the side of dressing to come in its own container but they put it in the grilled cheese container. Which brings me to the grilled cheese sandwich. Had I eaten in the restaurant , I would have sent it back. It was ONE slice of American cheese on 2 pieces of bread that were barely light brown and the cheese wasn't even melted. When I called and told them I was there for my curbside delivery, the girl on the phone said I could come in and pick it up. NO! I wanted it brought to my car, which she did do. I am not eating inside any restaurant till there's a vaccine and I'm never ordering curbside here again. Ate here on a Sunday morning, meeting relatives from out of town. We were seated and offered coffee while we waited. I was impressed. Everyone arrived and loved their breakfasts of pancakes, mush, biscuits and gravy. Then there was mine...a sausage and bacon omelet. How can you mess that up, right? Friendly with a smile and is attentive and courteous. Her attitude is a sure winner and probably why customers keep coming back. It's somewhat surprising and refreshing to find a server with her attitude and pleasant demeanor, coupled with her attentive nature that is something almost totally lacking in the restaurant world these days. Bob Evans has been our go to breakfast for years... They usually have a nice crowd but most of the time your food comes out fast and hot once they finally get to you. My only complaint is how long it takes the servers to get to you once you are seated. This was my first time going to a Bob Evan's. I seem to remember a joke, maybe from South Park, about senior people gathering like hoodlums at Bob Evan's. That was clearly not a joke, I was probably the youngest person in the place. Three things stood out to me.... First the food was quick and the waitress was attentive. Second, no matter how many times I asked for no tomato on my food, I still receive tomato (this was a theme everywhere I ate in St Louis). Third, and most bizarre, the mens restroom had a lock on the inside of the door. This was not a single person restroom. Perhaps the senior hoodlum reference was not to far off. Why would they need a lock on the inside of door? Maybe it's where they wheel and deal their various life sustaining medications? Who knows.... We ate at the Bob Evans in Bridgeton, MO this evening. Our silverware had dried food on it including 2 knives, a fork and a spoon. My daughter's french toast was only fully cooked on one side. The backside was soggy and gross. They brought us a replacement French toast and she couldn't stomach it because it tasted too much like eggs instead of French toast. We had to ask our waitress for drink refills twice because she forgot to bring them out. I would have understood but we were 1 of 3 tables in the entire restaurant and her only table. Highly disappointed! They gave me an original receipt with a survey option on it but after I paid the bill the receipt they gave back didn't have the survey option. I come to this location at least 3-4 times a month for after work for lunch with my mother. The main attraction for me is the coffee. I normally do not make any at home, but I'll easily drink 3 or more cups there since the blend is good. I have had a little of everything other than the seafood and steaks on the menu.
