I also noticed the layout changed. The men section is still in the back, but the men sale section started to invade the female back section. This is where I found the pants. Club monaco also has 20% student discount, but they would not let me stack it on the sale discount. But in New York I remember they did.

But this isn't really an arcade. It's a retail shop that houses a healthy mix of new and vintage clothing, hats and accessories. Everything here is reminiscent of that liminal space between the 80s and 90s. Neon, hiphop, record-scratchy. Actually it's more than a retail shop; it's a man cave. The fashions are casual and fun, and the guys working here are more than OK with it if you just chill out and pump quarters into Terminator 2. Dudesque touches about. A large Canadian flag hangs from the ceiling and unfurls into a makeshift changeroom. There is a boombox on the floor. Kewl place. Obligatory Title Pun: LIV it up at 54! Menu Readability: Their understated signage is more befitting a Detroit barbershop than a hipster curio emporium; I suppose that is the point. Need to mention: I think they throw events here from time to time. What this place teaches me about myself: "If you don't learn Roman numerals, you won't know the year certain motion pictures are copyrighted!"

They have a handful of partnerships going with companies from New York where Community 54 started. This Toronto location is part of their expansion plan to move into new markets. I'm hoping that they will be able to keep each store unique to the community it's located in rather than try and sell the same things everywhere and further homogenize consumer culture. Perhaps I'm starting to get a little deep for a review but things like this excite and scare me at the same time. If we're all wearing the same things and shopping in the same places then does it really matter where we go or what we do since it's literally the exact same experience everywhere? Wow, totally went off topic there. What else is there to say about this place? Everything is for sale. Everything. The benches, the little things that look like knick knacks, the video games at the front door, everything. Most of the clothing on display is for men so far but they have plans to bring in more stuff as they can. They have the tiniest kids section I've ever seen and I'm pretty sure that won't be an ongoing thing but it was funny to see these tiny little sweaters next to men's over sized jackets. The feel of this place is somewhere between nostalgic 90s hip hop (as seen in the black Bart Simpson dunking a basketball tee shirt) and 70s work wear (think blue collar not disco) with lots of retro sports jackets, tee shirts and baseball caps from Good Wood. I wish I could remember the other brands they were carrying but you'll just have to take a look for yourself. I was told that they will have denim eventually and they want to start selling shoes as well. The rest of the store is dedicated to classic arcade game cabinets. The front of the store houses a Galaga and Terminator 2 among other things. You can play them in the store if you like but they are also for sale. I didn't ask what they were selling for because I don't have space for a cabinet but I'm sure they aren't cheap. I'm looking forward to seeing what the future holds for Community 54 because I like what I've seen so far.

Nonetheless in the age where mainstream brands have brought somewhat formal clothing within reach of mere mortals I would say this place is a decent alternate if you don't want to join the now its sale/boxing day and load up approach for a specific brand. Some of the stuff I tried fit well and I kind of like the color scheme and cut they offer. Prices were decent and the setup is nice and open. I never felt pressured into trying something on and help was there when needed. I would say give it a look if you think their style of clothing is up your alley. 3.5 Stars

Tiger of Sweden fits Ossington nicely as the location and brand both lean towards the young, urban, and trendy. You do need to bring your gold card here though... it does have really nice textures and quality but you pay for it. Right now in December, they have some really great sales. Stepping in the large serene and modern space, I noticed more than half the rack had 30 to 40% off. I was impressed as it wasn't just a token rack in the back on sale. The clean lines and fit of the clothes leans torwards the European slim build and I personally like that. Tiger of Sweden did originally start in menswear but their woman's wear is really nice as well. Think easy pieces that transition from Bay St office to evening in a nice upscale restaurant. The service here is friendly and attentive ... though they do know that it is annoying to hover. They don't do that thankfully. They offer insights on sizing as it is in European sizing. It's not the usual American brand sizing. It was easy to try items on and even though I tried on a few coats among the store, I never once felt the heavy pressure of a sales tactic. Overall, really nice clean modern aesthetic that will last beyond a season in terms of quality & style.

Simply add another zero to the price you wanna pay and there you go. Why do I still go, well for inspiration and to see what these designers are up to. When I dropped in recently the door was locked and they had to unlock and let me in. And then they asked that I leave my coffee at the front and not walk around with it. Probably a good idea given how valuable everything is there. But if you want to see interesting collaborations between manufacturers and artists, this will be the place. It's a fascinating look at the direction of street style and attitude. Worth checking out next time you are strolling Spadina and Chinatown downtown.

Lately, there seemed to be a price jump and their aesthetics have changed. It's definitely more fussier with less office wear. I feel they're more targetting someone in California than someone in Toronto. The storefront reminds you of a boutique storefront that took over an old Victorian home. Instead of an open modern space, the store is cut into small rooms and it's very hard to get an idea of all the clothes available. Im sure I've missed out on some decent pieces ever since they changed to this way. As for the quality and costs, I think the quality has held over time but the costs certainly have gone up. A short sleeved flowy cotton top $150? Simple cotton shift is $180? None of these designs have intricate stitching or designs.... they're all simple basics. Yes they are better than Banana Republic but are they 3 times better? No. As for service, I find it hit and miss. Sometimes you'll have a really nice and helpful staff and then the other times, a dismissive bored staff who is constantly on their phone. I think I've stopped consistently coming to Club Monaco once they moved to their new spot and changed their staff. Sometimes they have good deals and you can find a decent item but with all the recent changes, good luck finding it!

The customer service has been consistently great whenever I come in and their always ready to serve you whether you buy something or not. I always find that some of their stores elsewhere are a bit of a snob (and I have an issue about that, thus I do not go back there unless I really have to) but this store is welcoming. So that is a MAJOR plus. And the selections are spread out really nicely and I like the look the new store has compared to the other ones I saw. And oh, they have a little display of pre-loved/vintage chanel pieces if your interested. Which I never knew they carried!
