Terrible experience do not use them!! They built a wood topper for our kitchen island (that took way longer than it should have) with two cutouts for our sinks, they either used the wrong varnish or applied it incorrectly. It has chipped and cracked and they are basically saying (through a text message) that it's our fault and refusing to offer any type of solution other than telling us to find someone to fix it. I love their supply of lumber, it is unparalleled to all the yards I have been to. I will agree service there can be sketchy and the process they use is confusing, especially for those who have no experience dealing with a lumberyard. However, it is a pretty common, old fashioned, kind of lumberyard. I see that there were many complaints regarding issues with the wood, cupping warping, color changes when items are substituted or replaced. One thing to understand, wood is a natural product and behaves in an unpredictable ways after being Milled and finished. While the customer wants their job to be perfect, it is often a tall order given the natural or unnatural characteristics of wood. There is no real cookie cutter technique when creating a custom wood project using unique and custom milled woods. Which is probably why you do not see a business like this in every town or county. I have never had them build anything for me or had them mill any of my lumber. So to critique this aspect of the business would be inappropriate. I will say that you will be hard pressed to find a yard with the diverse species available here. I will continue to use them for my wood needs. Prices are decent and the material is great, from what I have experienced. read more

We have a big project that my family wants to do. We're going to build a custom gazebo. We're looking for some cedar posts. You walk into this warehouse and it's like a lumber jacks Heaven! But customer service is not their forte. The receptionist basically waved us off and pointed us in the direction of where to go. We went back to ask some more questions and once again she just kind of shrugged it off as they can't do anything or even walk over to help. Guess we'll have to keep looking read more

The lumber is great, customer service not so much. I gave it 4 stars because the selection of wood is great. I've bought knotty cedar (only 1 i had delivered and a few issues with coordinating, but ultimately got the lumber i needed) wormy maple, black walnut and cherry in varying lengths over the years. Again though, it was usually only a few pieces of lumber and I knew what I wanted ahead of time. To alleviate issues with service, you need to have an idea of the wood you are looking for, pick out the pieces you want. Once you have them, you have to be assertive and grab a guy on the floor to write you a ticket to pay at the window. If I didn't know about lumber or was a customer who didn't know what they wanted, not sure I would go there because it is chaotic, overwhelming and the associates don't seem to helpful. read more

Dishonest business. Steve Zirger is a small-time hustler, arrogant and smarmy. I bought 450 sq. ft. of white oak wide plank flooring. They loaded it and when it came time to put floor down, we realized they only loaded approximately 385 sq. ft. The shortage was an extreme hassle and cost us more money as installers were unable to complete job. I had to drive all the way back with trailer to get more floorboard only to have Insult added to Injury. He had the audacity to make me pay for the shortage and refused to give me a credit for 50 sq. ft. regardless that I proved it with photos of material loaded and video of floor's precise measurements. The lumber is beautiful and the warehouse is like a gold mine. Unfortunately that's the beginning and end of it. I ordered 14 bundles of planks to be used on a client's ceiling, and another 10 of a different species for some walls. They delivered half of the order and then delivered the remaining bundles in the wrong species and cuts. It delayed the contractor's progress & frustrated the client. What was really disappointing was that in spite of working closely with the salesman, submitting a written order with photos of the right stuff, and paying in full in advance, they got it wrong. They have quite a bit of wood. Their selection is great. The service is terrible. I have been there three times. The first time, I bought maple for a project. Took 45 minutes to get help. One kid finally helped and disappeared. Second time I went was the same. Didn't buy anything because every time I asked a question the guy would go find out for me and never return. Third time... I thought maybe it was just a bad couple of times. Give them one more chance. Same thing. I grabbed one of the 8 guys wandering around. Asked him a question. He came back 15 min later. He actually had an answer, but forgot to tell me. I asked him another question. He disappeared. 10 min later, I walked out without purchasing anything, again. Won't go back. read more

They don't even return my calls. There are plenty of other places to get reclaimed material. Also; you will look at samples and choose a finish but that's not what you will get. A HUGE shout out to Steve...He was very patient in helping me find a wooden mantle to put over my fireplace. He showed me what was in stock and because I did not like what was currently there (changes by the hour as people purchase what is on display), he suggested that he build one instead according to our specifications. WOW! He is very very talented! We could not be more pleased with how it came out. We are planning on staining it the color of the newly installed floors so it will be gorgeous in our new living room above the fireplace. He was able to turn this around in a matter of weeks instead of months as was first promised to us. Boards and Beams stands as the best lumber joint in the state....Yes. they are the best, most friendly and accommodating lumber facility around. Steve, the owner has a great personality. He gets his hands just as dirty as the apprentice, he's always willing to help and answer any questions. He's also got an incredible collection of machines! Then there's Jeff. A giant person equally matched with patience and willfulness to help. I think i once asked him the price of every species of wood they carry.....i thought he was gonna toss me into the drum sander!! Nope. he hung out and answered all price calls and has given me some deals that I later found out was their actual price for the lumber!?!?In other words, they operate selling a huge selection of hardwoods, reclaimed lumber, softwoods milling services etc at like 40% less than anybody around.....? Literally the worst. Today is 3 weeks since I tried ordering some basic cedar. They are all friendly, but nobody knows what's going on. Days and days calling and then saying they would call back letting me know what the update was when the wood could be delivered and 5:30 came and went. Our project has been delayed only because of the distinction of this place. When I asked to speak with a manager to find out where our wood was I was told they didn't have one-go figure. Don't listen to the bad reviews, this place is the best lumberyard in the Tristate area. Always great service from the guys on the floor. One on one personal service, not pushy or rushing you - all around super helpful. Today Jimmy was our guy. Not even a hint of annoyance when you ask for the one board on the bottom of the stack that takes 20 minutes to pull. If I could give 10 stars for the most unfriendlly, unprofessional customer service of any company I have ever had the displesure of working with, I would! I got confusing and inaccurate information from the man who cut my wood(1 inch wider than I asked for)and then had to wait 10 minutes for the incredibly rude office worker to get off the phone so I could pay them their money. Once home, I realized the man did not give me the width that I wanted and I called them. They were not only not willing to rectify their mistake and wanted to charge me a milling fee to fix it.They were unable to clearly explain their charges and seemef unwilling to take the time to help me understand . First, the service is terrible, these guys hang out in their office and sometimes it can be quite hard to communicate with them let alone have them help you out with anything. That being said, this is the best lumber yard in the area. They are about 20% cheaper than competition when it comes to decking and raw material. Thy also have the best selection in north jersey, a place where quality lumber is next to impossible to come by. Walking around the warehouse is a cool experience if you love the smell of wood and woodworking, and everyone is very friendly. I purchased Red Balau wood in 5/4 for decking and 1" for fascia for a deck and was convinced by the proprietor that I should use Eagle Claw hidden deck clips and their own "special" slot cutting bit which would prevent cupping because "most people buy fully slotted boards which are the cause of cupping" and the need to sand down brand new decks. The ONLY part of the deck that did not cup was the picture frame and stairs on which I used the pro-plug fastening system. After I let the field boards acclimate for two weeks to a month, I coated 4 sides with Messmers UV protectant and installed in the hot and dry summer..the ENTIRE FIELD cupped within 3-4 weeks. I sent two emails to "Tim" who sold me on this system...asking for advice on how to rectify...no response..at all. I returned six bags of "tiger claw" clips and was docked 20% for the pleasure of "restocking" the worthless clips, and installed the remaining 120 sq/ft. of boards on the stairs with the pro-plug system. Yes, gluing in all those plugs is tedious, but infinitely preferable to the entire field of the deck being cupped. Will have to sand the field down next year and try to make it right. DO NOT USE EAGLE CLAW CLIPS ON 5/4 RED BALAU DECKING! The clips and/or the fasteners used to hold to the frame are NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO PREVENT CUPPING OF THIS DENSE WOOD INSTALLED IN the usual season. Good luck read more

Located in the Pio Costa industrial park (Building 10) which is basically behind the Montville Home Depot on Rt. 46 is a gem of a place for anyone looking for specialty lumber. I went looking for a 12 foot 6/4 Red Oak to use for a flooring transition. I could see how someone who's not a contractor may be intimidated at first, there's no front door or show room that you walk directly into. You're in a warehouse in a small office but once you explain what you're looking for they're willing to hear you out. Between the guys in the office and in the warehouse I was able to select my rough lumber. For an additional fee their fabricator put it through the planer, rip saw, and table saw creating a custom made bevel. I couldn't be happier and will actually seek out a project to put a custom touch on it again. read more

We drove the 13 hours from NC to NJ to do business with these guys. We knew they had the wood we needed thanks to email and phone conversations with Tim, but what we didn't know was just how great the customer service was that we experienced. Tim was incredibly concerned with making sure that we got the quality of wood that we expected, and therefore, was quite adamant about not milling anything until we arrived on Saturday morning to actually see the timbers that we were purchasing. I'm so glad he had that concern and waited until we got there because what wound up happening was us actually hand-picking our timbers, and these guys helped us dig for what we wanted. The wood looks amazing!! They milled it right there on the spot, and were just really great to work with all around. It's a family business, that's been running for something like 20 years, and I see a long future for them as well. Great wood, milled expertly, and a reasonable cost! I found a yard worker who pulled out a bunch of boards for me and then a few extra when I didn't see enough that I liked. They made the cuts, I paid, the whole process done in under 30 minutes. Tried for three weeks to get a drawing for a pavilion and was told day after day it would be worked on. I even spoke to Steve the owner who said he was so sorry and that the next day he would get it done. I never even bid them Out just agreed to the price and needed the drawing for a permit. After speaking with Steve he told me that he would have his son Steve do it the next day and he would call me and two days later nothing. Then I'm told by a woman in the office his computer broke and she would call me the next day and two days later I called and was told I could buy it but he can't do the drawings. So here is a company that was offered 10,000 dollars no question asked just for a drawing and a bill and was lied to and blown off and obviously it never mattered. They are in professional, discourteous and lie to cover one another's story. It's a real shame because the place is actually pretty cool and nice to go to. If you need a board go there if you need a project like a pavilion or pergola that they say they sell don't walk run away because it's all empty promises. Maybe one day the owner will wake up and realize that service is what sells and communication if there is a delay or change is imperative not an option when it's convenient. Sorry for the long post but I wastes three weeks and am back to square one maybe just maybe Steve will do the right thing. read more

I can only speak about our personal experience with this company. We built a new home and ordered $35,000 worth of beams for the outside decor of the house. That was over 12 months and many many promises of delivery ago. The company still has our money and we were delivered a few beams that cannot even be used. Upon delivery, my daughter discovered that only half of the order was delivered and what was delivered was the wrong size. After stringing them along for a year, promising to correct their order, my daughter and son-in-law are suing Boards & Beams to recover their money. I have had good experiences at boards and beams in the past. Today was different. I tried to have a slab priced out for 3 weeks - constantly being told someone would call me back, which never happened. I was forced to go elsewhere (a 3 hour drive one way) for the slab that I needed. Before I made the purchase, I called boards and beams to check if they were able to resaw my piece and I was assured that they could, and even gave me an estimate. The next day I brought my slab to them - first of all to find out that they were going to charge me more than 4x the amount they quoted me over the phone, THEN cut my piece completely wrong and I ended up with two giant pieces of scrapwood. When I complained (very very nicely) I was told to speak with Steve, the owner. I thought finally I can get some help. Steve acted like it was my fault, and said that I "never should have brought the piece to them to have it cut because it can't be done." Well why was I given a quote over the phone? Why did one of your employees make the cut? Why aren't I being reimbursed for my materials that you ruined? Steve's solution was he refunded me only the money that I paid to have the cut made and that was it, then moved on to his bigger clients, and that was that for him. Overall this experience ended up costing me $1,500 and two days worth of work. Thanks a lot Boards and Beams! read more

If I could give this place -5 stars, I would. I have never wrote a negative review for any company, and am so upset that I have to. Where to begin? I have never seen such horrible customer service from any company in my life. We ordered a custom reclaimed oak island countertop and matching shelves in February of this year. We called 9 weeks later asking where it was and it seemed likely they had no idea who we were, as we had to remind them multiple times. When we finally received the countertop - we were very pleased, it looked beautiful. Less than 2 weeks after it was installed, it began warping and the finish was peeling off. After contacting the company and sending pictures, they said they were remaking it. Fast forward 2 months to June after reaching out to them for an update, and we find out the person we dealt with is no longer there, and the owner would review and get back to us. We called for months - spoke to the owner, spoke to the "manager" - not once, did anyone ever call us back after repeatedly telling us they wood. Finally in August, the owner Steve tried to show he cared by coming to our house to look at the countertop in person and access the situation - he told us they were going to bring it back to their shop to help fix the warping and re seal it to fix the peeling. Weeks later of again, not hearing back from them as to when they were going to fix it, they finally came in September. They returned 2 weeks to later to reinstall it in our kitchen - it looked great, the warp was fixed and so was the finish, however, it was DARK. They took it out of our kitchen and it was very light wood - and returned a very dark piece of wood in it's place. This was also next to shelving that they made to match, which is now 2 different colors. After reaching out with pictures and questioning why it was stained, we are once again being completely ignored. The owner Steve's reasoning for all of the issues we had was "growing pains". I paid thousands of dollars to this company and am left with a mismatched kitchen and months of headaches going back and forth. They don't care about their customers at all - so unfortunate. STAY AWAY if you'd like to be happy with what you pay for. read more
