Review of Gem Flooring
I got my floors done by GEM Floors, on or about February 2019.
First I want to mention that GEM Floors contracts out the work. Had I known this beforehand, I may not have hired them.
The office manager, Luisa, was very nice and personable and tried to make things right. She followed through and called every day to check in, however, the contractor, Jose, was another matter. My review is on Jose. I kept getting e-mails to do a review, so here it goes. I'm reviewing Jose separately on the tile installation and wood floor repair.
The scope of the work was to remove old linoleum and replace it with vinyl tile. The work was being done on a full bath, that has a laundry closet in it, a half bath, and a hallway that led to my garage that was getting a wood look vinyl tile. The washer/dryer in the laundry closet was supposed to be moved so that the old linoleum could be replaced with vinyl tile. I was also getting wood floors repaired in the living room. This included disposing of the old linoleum, removing and replacing the toilets and a pedestal sink. The job in the two bathrooms was not very good - 1 star. The job in the hallway came out beautiful - 5 stars. He did a great job on the wood floors in the living room - 4 stars for that and I will explain why I did not give him 5 stars. I paid about $2000.
When Jose, arrived, he assessed what had to be done. He had a scowl on his face and did not look happy that he had to move the washer/dryer and pull linoleum. He also wasn't very personable. This changed after day 3... He said that the linoleum did not have to be pulled. He looked very weary when he saw all that had to be done. To make a long story short, he did not remove the pedestal sink in the half bath and did not move the washer/dryer, although I paid for this to be done. He placed vinyl tile just under the front part of the washer/dryer. The laundry area has a bifold door and instead of removing the hardware, he pieced tile around it. He also did not do the area between my cabinet and wall. He did remove the toilet, but I had a leak under the tank in the full bath. I made him aware of it and he fixed the leak, but then the toilet valve was not working. I decided not to mention it because I know that he knew it was broken and stayed quiet about it. I replaced the part myself for fear he would make it worse. The job that he did was sloppy. When Luisa called to follow up, I mentioned the work and sent her photos. She showed up at my place with him and told him what she needed him to fix. I had already cleaned and was placing my home on the market and I did not want to prolong this by having him do things over again. He did some fixes and everything looked better, but the vinyl tiles themselves and the placement of the tiles still look crappy. I should have left the floors the way they were as they now look worse, in my opinion. I am very dissatisfied with the work. I could have done a better job (as I've done in the past), but I can't due to back problems and lack of time it would take to remove old linoleum and glue. read more
