Board House Coffee might've suffered a little from me coming off a streak of really stellar coffee spots recently, but I still thought it was a solid choice overall. We tried the sesame latte and the banana cream top latte. Both were good, and the cream top was really nice, but I just wish the sesame and banana flavors came through a bit stronger. I stopped by here one morning when my mom was in town and I got a smoothie, which was very fresh and well priced, and my mom got a latte and a croissant. The croissant however, was absolutely extremely stale and made me question if I was safe having eaten it. The seating for this shop is pretty limited. The shop was always relatively busy, so most of the tables were in use during the time I was here. It looks like it's also a spot where people come to work (I believe there was a printer here, which could really come in handy!). Yay! Found a spot that opens early and is perfect on my way to work for solid food and drink. I love their iced matcha with oat milk and honey lavender with the vegan wrap (added mushrooms). A big no for this one. Went with a friend for breakfast. There was a big dog, off-leash, jumping up to the counter, and at one point went back to where they were making food. The dog was coming up to the table, sniffing us and our food. I asked the owner to pull his dog away from my friend (she's been bit a few times) and he became the biggest baby. I have driven by this coffee shop more than 1000 times and decided to stop in today to try the coffee as an alternative to Starcrooks Pikes that I usually get all over. I don't drink coffee every day, only when it's an emergency like it was today--I was tired and needed to work at my desk on tedious things to wrap the week. I only get my coffee black, nothing added. You can really tell the quality of the brew this way. The woman that helped me was not friendly--I tried to pump her up right away with my usual "Hi, how are you?" Did not help. Ordered the coffee on the board @ 2.95, was rung up for almost $4.00 and questioned it--she said she gave me a large (without asking), I said I thought it was only 2.95, and she re-rung it and served it. No thank you to me, I did not know who to give the cash to after she gave me the coffee, so I just put my CC in the machine, and asked the other woman for the receipt (see pic) because none was offered. Just did not feel welcomed or valued--something was wrong. I don't think they understand or will ever understand the value of hello and goodby--it's not the culture of LA, it's what I hate about LA, and it's reflected here in the service I received. I entered my email in for their points club. Anyway, it's all about the coffee really: The coffee they use is Verve: www.vervecoffee.com The coffee tasted good. I really liked the physical cup that it came in a lot better than Starcrooks or most other places because it had a little door that you can open and close. (see pic) Even with the service--I would have given them a 4-star review--but here is reason that I did not: I know exactly the effect Starcrooks black coffee same size has on me throughout the day no matter where I buy it in the USA--If you drink a Starcrooks Pike Black just 2/3 a cup will charge you up for at least 8 hours. You will be wired. I usually save 1/3 for the next day. But the Verve--as good as it tasted--does not have the same level of caffeine in it--4 hours after the entire cup I was dozing at my desk. Like I said--when I get a coffee it's an emergency so I need serious infusion of caffeine. If you don't need that rush--try the coffee out here. It taste good. The inside of the place is not bad--plain--quiet, bunch of people sitting at computers right on Santa Monica Blvd. Some seats outside--local 20 something crowd mainly. Free easy parking lot shared with other businesses. read more

I was hoping I'd see some cute glazed donuts that I see on the top photo of this business, but be aware, there were no cute donuts. I instead got the raspberry Danish and a pour over to go with it. Not a fancy place, more practical than what you might expect from the top photo. Yes, I was disappointed that it wasn't cutesy here, but I did very much enjoy the pour over and Danish. Parking in this plaza can be a little tight (best for compact cars), but thankfully we went early in the morning when the lot was mostly empty. The interior has a fun design with a VW bus front-end that makes for good photos. The menu had a reasonable amount of items, but this is not a proper sit-down breakfast plate with omelettes, egg skillets, etc. You order and pick-up at the counter. There are a few small tables, one larger table, and some stool & counter seating. I ordered a bagel & lox, a pina colada bowl, and a cappuccino. Pricing was reasonable, though I thought the bagel & lox was a couple dollars overpriced. The bagel & lox was pretty tasty, but over-seasoned. The amount of salmon was minimal, but the bagel was toasted nicely and the cream cheese was generous. There was also a good amount of veggie toppings. The pina colada bowl looked amazing with its bright blue sorbet. I can't say it tasted like pineapple or coconut, but it was tasty. Good amount of berries and granola with a bit of coconut flakes. The cappuccino wasn't great. It reminded me of a Starbucks capp, but thankfully not as much of a burnt taste as Starbucks. It just had a slight amount of burnt flavor, and a somewhat weak topping of foamed milk. A good barista with a good frother and good milk can make a thick, creamy topping. It wasn't horrible, though. Not nearly as bad as a Dunkin capp. Overall, not bad. Pretty good food and mediocre coffee. read more

This is the second time to visit Board House Coffee. My first review I gave a 1star as I was served 2 year old expired chips with my sandwich. The owner reached out to me via Yelp, he was generally concerned and apologetic. He was professional and accepted my review with the intent of checking expiration dates of future chip inventory. He asked me to come back for a complimentary meal. I was back in the Santa Monica area and I did go back. The owner offered great service and instead of one complimentary sandwich, provided two. I dropped a friend off to get a procedure and looked for a local coffee shop to get some work done and wait it out. I chose board house due to the reviews and proximity. This isn't the place if you want over over the top customer service the man that took my order barely spoke. I don't like small talk so it worked for me. Both were delicious I was pleasantly surprised by the lox the had the perfect amount of cream cheese and the seasoning they used on top was flavorful without being over the top. I find myself wanting to come back here every week! There's a good amount of indoor and outdoor seating, and I usually don't find any problems with parking when I arrive around noon/ afternoon. There's plaza parking, as well as downstairs garage parking. I usually order a hot pistachio latte and it's delicious each time. The music is great, and it gives off a small-coffee shop vibe, with high quality drinks. True, drinks are pricey, but we're all trying to survive in this economy. The wifi password is on the receipt which you can request from the cashier. I really enjoy spending a few hours here every few weekends! It's so well-lit and the perfect work environment for me.
