This place is dangerous. If I lived in the neighborhood, I'm pretty sure it would bankrupt me because I'd be here every.single.day.
It's not a huge spot - come to think of it, it's just the right size. There's a table up front, which can seat about six or seven, a decent-sized bar, with some two-tops, perfect for some romantic, come hither conversations (inevitable after two or three of their delicious cocktails - see BELOW), and there's a patio for spring and summer (which, apparently, is what we call January now. What is up with the weather these days anyway?!).
I digress. Let's talk about cocktails and forget about those melting polar ice caps, shall we? The Kickstarter ($10), with rum, espresso, coffee bitters, and a twist of lemon, is basically a sneak attack in a glass. Dark, mysterious, topped by a nice thick layer of foam, it'll get you going when it's 1 a.m. and you're still out for some reason (I reckon it'd be a pretty excellent brunch cocktail, too). They make their Old Fashioned ($10) the simple, correct way, and they use Bulleit Bourbon because they're awesome and they know what's up. Also excellent is the Smoky Mary's ($10), a delightfully smoky margarita enhanced by an alder smoked salt rim (fun fact: alder smoked salt is the bomb). And you better believe their wine and beer list has some serious, affordable excellence going on, with selections from Troegs, 21st Amendment, Sly Fox, and Founders, and nary a glass of Chardonnay or Pinot Grigio to be found.
Because I am a stalker, I did some research and discovered that one of the owners (who I believe was our server; that's dedication) has some serious knowledge about farming, agriculture, and vegetables, so you know the food is legit. With our cocktails, we enjoyed the Burratta Bruschetta ($7 - easily shared amongst the 6 of us) and the Baby Octopus ($9), which was my favorite, even though I felt a little guilty eating it and its soothsayer powers. The menu is a good mix of small and large plates and chock full of seasonal and local ingredients. The Brunch menu looks amazing too - it strays far beyond the typical brunch fare, with offerings like a Duck Club sandwich ($18) and Pork Butt on a Biscuit with a poached egg ($12). Um, yes, please, give me that and three Kickstarters and we can call it a day. (PS, not actually a stalker, all this info is available on their website).
And, FYI, I'm pretty sure this place is named Blueprint because basically it's a model for how every other bar should be (welcoming, affordable, with good food and excellent cocktails), not because of any association with Jay-Z's sixth studio album. No offense, Jay-Z, your album is still the frog's knickers, but I don't want you stealing THIS Blueprint's thunder. read more
