Great products, I have encountered some amazing salespeople, but also one that told me "topical vitamin c doesnt work (I was holding CE ferulic) and to take supplements (Vitamin C is one of the most extensively studied and researched ingredients for skin health, especially regarding its antioxidant and anti-aging properties... anyways, there are some great products, and they have sales (including skinceuticals) a couple times a year. I went here to pick out hair care products with a gift card I got for my birthday. Immediately when I walked in all of the sales girls looked at me like I had no business being there. Then, one saleswomen, starts pushing me to buy $200 eye cream and even put some on my face without asking when I stated that I didn't want it. She then proceeded to say, "you need it, what are you 30?" mind you I'm 25 and found it INCREDIBLY RUDE to guess someone's age and point out their flaws. Ha, ha, ha -- not surprised to see all the one stars for this location. When the president of our women's group was there for a make-over, the manager suggested she arrange a group party for us. That sounded like fun. Then over the next TWO MONTHS she tried to get them to confirm a date. They didn't return calls or emails and no one would help her when she actually stopped in again. We finally told her that with Sephora and Ulta in the neighborhood we really did not need to get to know a store that was already showing us how little they cared about our business. Now reading all the reviews about rudeness and lack of customer service, I'm glad she didn't waste any more time. I went to this Bluemercury location to buy a candle. I had done some research before and I had called some locations and they all had the same candle and the candle was the same price. I browsed the various brands of cosmetics, hair care, and makeup before finding the candle that I wanted (Nest New York Moroccan Amber). I also wanted a body brush for the shower but it was $35 and I could get something cheaper at Target or Duane Reade. The salesperson didn't hover around me while I was looking at things, which can be annoying!!! I used a gift card that I had gotten for Christmas or a birthday (I can't remember) and paid for the candle. I had heard of Bluemercury before when I was in Washington DC visiting my brother who was at Law School at the time and I had been to one of their stores on the Upper West Side but it had closed down. read more

If I could give zero stars, even that would be too generous. Let me start off by saying that my entire professional life has been retail customer service, most of which was served in management positions. Never in my life have I experienced such ugliness and disrespect as I did here at Bluemercury UES. "Poor customer service" isn't even the phrase; it was outright abrasive and confrontational harassment by "Miranda", of which I'm even unsure if that was her name because she said it under her breath and laughed like "ha sure" when I tried to confirm. One week prior to this visit, my mother and I went in to purchase an entire facial regimen from Skinceuticals. The Darphin rep was in there and she ended up selling us on their line so I got my mom an entire regimen and got myself a serum. After just three uses, my mom's skin looked so textured, rough, and honestly lizard-like that even my dad who has bad eyesight and cataracts noticed, OVER FACETIME NO LESS! So, because this was my first time ever in a Bluemercury, I had to look up the return policy on their website which states: "We gladly accept returns on products that are in new or gently used condition. All samples are yours to keep, regardless of the return." (emphasis on GLADLY and ALL SAMPLES ARE YOURS TO KEEP) Because we purchased a large$$$ amount, they gave us so, so many samples. We were not expecting this at all because, like I said, I had never been to a Bluemercury before. So keep in mind I wasn't trying to swindle my way into free samples; I had NO idea we'd be showered with this. But anyway, with my new knowledge of their return policy, I went back to the store to return, and was going to repurchase an entire regimen of Skinceuticals from this location instead. That was, until I was met with such disgusting, shameful customer service. For accuracy's sake, please imagine this with the most condescending responses from the sales associate (Miranda): me: Hi, I'd like to return these items. They gave my mom such an adverse reaction to her face, to the point where her face was so textured, it looked like a lizard. (trying to be personable) sales associate, taking the items from me one by one: damn.. damn.. wow.. damn.. all of this??? Damn. Wow. me: yes, like I said, they gave my mom such a bad reaction sales associate: and did you bring back the samples? me: no, was I supposed to? (knowing full well I didn't have to) sales associate: yes you were. me: well, that's not what your website says sales associate: well you were supposed to me: well you should bring that up with Bluemercury because it EXPLICITLY SAYS "ALL SAMPLES ARE YOURS TO KEEP" sales associate: well you should have returned it. It's just the right thing to do. me: the right thing to do? IT SAYS ON YOUR WEBSITE. (If there was even any ambiguity that I was supposed to return the samples I would have, but it says it in black and white to keep the samples.) sales associate, with a cocky, holier than thou smirk: I'm not arguing with you. me: well you're disagreeing with me. sales associate: oh so we can't disagree? *laugh* me: ... me, blood boiling at this point: what is your name? sales associate, under her breath mumbling: Miranda (?) me: MIRANDA? sales associate, chuckling: sure I finished the transaction and left. 1. We can disagree, but not on your return policy. You are at this point disagreeing with the very company you work for, the very company you are bringing shame to. 2. Any idiot could see she was indeed arguing with me 3. Having been responsible for the hire of many retail associates, I would never in a million years hire someone like this. I'd go as far as to take this experience to train employees on what NOT to do like guilting the customer ("it's the right thing to do"), being oblivious of the return policy, cussing at/about the customer, being outright nasty. Although this was a fellow woman of color, I believe she treated me differently because I am not your average middle-aged white lady (nothing against them) of the Upper East side. I feel I was treated with lower standards than some of my neighbors. My blood was boiling so much that I called corporate right then and there and filed my complaint out loud at their doorstep as they stared me down with such disgust. I came online to write about my experience and am not surprised by the horrible reviews they have. Bluemercury, please do something about this location and the poor quality hires you've made here. There are plenty of qualified people who are willing to respect your customers and not smear the name of this well-established company. It is with associates like Miranda that the company bleeds, through word of mouth by experiences like this one. One of MANY. Please read these reviews and intercede on behalf of the people who were so willing to be loyal customers to your brand, but are now so turned off by the likes of ugly-spirited associates, that they RUN to your competitors. read more

October seems to be some kind of promotional month for employees. I felt upsold and bombarded by $200 items and meeting spending milestones for the employees. When I first walked in I was mocked by the shorter, black, male staff member for the pitch of my voice. Which I let go. I get it. You are stuck in retail on a Saturday. After seeking help from the other colleagues, this is where the upselling happened even when I repeatedly said I was not interested in another expense item (as I already had the $200 item I was going there for in the first place). When I considered purchasing the item they were pushing on to me the rest of the employees were like "wow, good job. Look at you" to the sales associate for pushing this on me. Gross overall. The only woman who continues to be excellent there is your skincare enthusiast, she seems to have been there a long time. Also another woman of color on their staff. I had a very upsetting experience at the store on Broadway. The last time I was in the store I spent close to $600.00 on Skin Care and makeup. I had my make done for an event and bought several Trish McEvoy products. This time I wanted the same lipstick I have been using and happy with and wanted to add a blush. When I arrived at the store, there was a Salesperson working with someone and totally ignore me. They were also speaking extremely loud. I looked around for someone to help me and had to walk to the back where a Salesperson was dusting the shelves. She seemed annoyed and not very friendly. I could not make up my mind which color of blush I wanted and asked her advise. She answered very sharply and rude almost to the point of nasty. She said I told you 3 times this is the one you should get. The store was out of blush cases. So I bought just the blush and was told to purchase the case on line. When I was paying for the 2 products, I asked her a question and all she said to me was put your code int the Credit Card machine. I felt really aweful when I left the store. Worst in store customer service. Basically all 3 blue mercury stores I have been in. Upper west side on Columbus 88th and 3rd But 75th &third Ave is the worst. They all stand around in a mostly empty store and they just talk to each other. nobody asks if they can help. They just take your card when you are ready to pay. I will shop online at Amazon or Sephora from now on never going back to these stores. They need to step up their game ! I'm not someone who reviews every experience. It takes a lot for me to spend the time on it. I had a terrible experience at the Blue Mercury on Third Avenue and 75th Street, a year ago. I decided that I'd give them another chance and thought that things had improved, due to a change in management. BUT today's experience proved that customer service is still not a priority. I was there to buy a specific product and paid for it. I then saw a lipstick that I was interested in trying. The sales person was so involved in her own personal iPhone conversation that I couldn't get her attention and ended up leaving the store. FYI - my experience last year was so bad that I called and wrote to the corporate Customer Service Department, but never received the courtesy of a call back. DONE!!! read more

Heard good things about Deborah Lippman nail polish. Blue Mercury seems to be one of the only places on the UES that carries it. They had 3 plastic trays under the counter. I am truly shocked at how I was treated yesterday. I am clearly not a "makeup person" which I told them and they supposedly acknowledged. I wanted to find a tinted moisturizer and some eye shadow. They only showed ONE product and then told me I needed lipstick and blush. They asked me to put the samples on and kept gushing about how amazing I looked. I couldn't see the difference. They were in such a rush to check me out that I didn't even feel I could have time to browse other product lines. I paid $80 for a small tube of concealer and $40 for an even smaller tube of blush. The minute I walked out of the store I was mad. I felt pressured as there were SIX employees in the tiny store and I was the only customer. Returning the items now and never going back. read more

I'm a Sephora girl, but I was pressed for time and needed something quickly before I left for a trip. I was next to a Bluemercury and figured it go in and quickly grab it. As I left, it dawned on me why I never shop here. Terrible customer service, limited selection and no rewards program. I entered and quickly found what I was looking for. As I tried to decide among a few options, 4-5 employees stood around loudly gossiping. They neither offered any help or paused their conversation as a few of us browsed. Eventually I approached an employee to ask a question. She was less than helpful. The cashier couldn't be bothered to even make eye contact as I paid. This place is pretty terrible, especially when there are far better options, like Sephora. I won't be back. read more

Alex introduced me to another gentleman who worked for Darphin (I didn't catch his name). He was lovely and gave terrific advice with minimal pressure to buy. Just walked out of the 3rd Avenue - a sales person followed me around the store - after 3 times of saying I am ok - I just want to shop - HER manager said "she is just doing her job" after i said i am ok I don't need any help. - THE WORST SHOPPING EXPERIENCE! I just had a negative experience at this store. I walked in intending to buy eye cream. Nobody offered to help and when I was looking for a garbage can I was pointed to "over there" - no manners, no sales technique, no help. I then asked product a question and it was like pulling teeth to get an answer. after all this I still decided to buy the eye cream and she then dropped it - didn't offer to get a new one or even offer an apology. Also pro tip: sign up for their rewards program (just with an email). Almost every time I'm there they give me a bunch of wonderful free samples. He's done my friends and my sister's makeup as well as some of my celebrity clients. He's to the point and truly knows his products. I've personally worked in the beauty/cosmetics industry before so I have to say I absolutely love this store as well as the service provided. The staff are all super friendly and I love that they call regarding special events and promotions. I love the skincare, haircare and entire range of product. One specialist suggested I step out to see foundation in natural light- and that was really helpful! I got hooked on the La Mer foundation and soft cream ever since (seriously, excellent sales!) My only wish- in very rare customer form I'm sure- is that I still be called or contacted regarding in store events and promos, I didn't make it in for the last one and haven't heard from them. I recently moved but would love to go back especially if there was some type of special. I would/will totally go again! Recommended! read more

I arrived here in NYC on August 30. I usually shop at Blue Mercury at The Point which is at El Segundo/ Manhattan Beach. El Segundo has the most amazing, friendly customer service!! They even offer samples freely and make suggestions out of products you are interested. I've discovered so many products that works well with me - thru them. However, since I arrived here in NYC, Blue Mercury has been a complete nightmare!!!! My first experience was Blue Mercury around 70 something on 3rd avenue. I am a surfer and ever since I've been here in NYC my skin has changed. I walked in desperately trying to figure out what new products I should try because what I had was no longer working. I began to try La Mer considering it is potent. This large stocky black sales girl then walks up to me to say: every ounce you're trying is costing us. I ignored her and walked away. I never went back since then. My second horrible experience is the 80 something on third. When you walk in there - they refuse to help you. And if they do, you can see that the sales folks gossip and lurks around you. I was having trouble with a hair cream I bought as it was giving me dandruff. Anyhow, I decided to walk out and head to Madison which is close. I recall having a pleasant experience there.. Anyhow, I went to Madison and it is the closest friendly experience I can get compared to CA. I depend on Blue Mercury for my products and frankly I am disappointed. I just can't believe I am investing my money here towards rude people. I'm glad though that Madison store is friendly. This week, I needed a new moisturizer and they recommended this amazing product that I would have never bothered to buy if they didn't do a makeover and tested it on me!! Went in to get my make up done in anticipation of looking for my wedding dress. Had an appointment, of course they looked puzzled when I gave them my name. The lady doing my makeup was almost mute and was expressionless when I told her why I was there, wow way to put a damper on an exciting day. Got a gift certificate for a facial. Went on a Saturday afternoon expecting to be pampered and a deep cleansing. I was surprised there was no steamer to open my pores. The girl maybe cleaned my pores(very painful and abrupt) for 3 minutes. She smeared a few products on my face. No massage. Nothing holistic or relaxing about this process..I decided to dye my eyebrows and I am a redhead. I asked for ash blonde she dyed my eyebrows dark brown and i looked ridiculous. When I mentioned they were too dark the woman servicing me said she is doing this for years and she knows what she is doing. (petite pretty Asian girl) I felt i was rushed and did not get the service my friend intended who bought me the certificate. I have to agree with Sloane's review. Always thought Blue Mercury was a great addition to my UES neighborhood until today when I crossed path with Punk Rocker from the 1980s man. Was putting together a random installation when I walked in--no other customers--and he reluctantly came to help me. Literally argued from the start-refused to let me try products and when I asked for what I wanted--have been using the same things for four years--confused the products, then insisted he was right. Was start to finish hostile and crazy. If you don't want to be there, don't be there. You are making your store look bad and are a misery to deal with. read more

I went to the UES Bluemercury today and even though the store was clearly open for business I couldn't open the front door. I wasn't about to leave and come back so I kept trying to open the door and even knocked to get the sales clerk's attention. She pointedly ignored me so a customer tried to open the door but couldn't since it was locked and asked the clerk to open it for me. Finally the clerk motioned for me to walk in through the side door. When I got in it was the customer who actually apologized to me. We looked at the clerk for an explanation and she said that she locked it because they were understaffed and they didn't want anyone else coming in. Apparently the 2 clerks were overwhelmed by the FOUR people in the store. What a joke. To make matters worse I was there because I need to return products that were recommended to me by the Union Square Bluemercury but were not at all appropriate for my skin type even though I clearly explained my skin issues. However store policy is that there are no refunds only store credit. Worst customer service ever and crappy store policies. Will never shop at Blue Mercury again. read more

I've been to the Union Square and East Village locations and have had good experiences with the salespeople there. My visit to the UES location tonight (I guess it's moved to 68th/3rd now) was a stark contrast. I came to this location because it's near my work and they were one of the few stores in town stocking a product I wanted. When I walked in, the store was empty except for 4 salespeople.....and not one of them bothered to look up from their phones or approach me to ask if they could help with anything. They looked utterly disinterested and almost scornful that a customer had walked in. Everytime I asked about any products I felt like I was bothering them. It was jarring since any other time i've shopped for cosmetics at other Blue Mercury locations or places like Bloomingdales and Nordstrom, I practically feel smothered by overeager salespeople. This store made me miss that. I will not return to this store again. read more
