11 OUT of 10 STARS!!!!…read more I look forward to every facial I have with Amber Woods not only because working with her (and using her skincare products) keeps my skin healthy and glowing, but also because it is an all-around delightful experience. First of all, her Pink Light products are DIVINE. Remarkably she formulates and produces them all herself in small batches. As someone who is very sensitive to chemicals and perfume smells, I fully appreciate the freshness of ingredients and high quality of her products. And the care and expertise with which she applies them is so nurturing and healing. But it's how she does the facial massage that truly distinguishes Amber from the rest. She combines massage, gua sha (with special stones), and lymphatic drainage with the overall effect being one of complete relaxation. As a long-time client (10+ years) I've come to realize that Amber embodies all the best qualities I look for in an esthetician. She is knowledgeable, gentle, warm, caring, and most of all, generous of spirit. She loves what she does and I can feel that, and it's what I believe makes her so special. I can't recommend her highly enough.

Reviewing based on product experience. Got Pink Light Crystal Facial Tonic and enzyme mask in a…read morenatural beauty sub box. Was immediately annoyed because, as a person who is very much not woo, I didn't jive with a product infused with gold and diamonds to, uh, channel divine healing. Woo vibes aside, these products are awesome. I only use very high-end, mostly natural skincare products, and while I've found many I love, I have struggled to find a moisturizer that keeps my glow without triggering any blemishes. For months now I've had a routine of toner, serum, and about three drops of the Facial Tonic. My skin feels beautiful right after, and stays moisturized (but not oily) all day. I haven't had a blemish (at all) in over a month. I haven't done a comprehensive facial treatment in at least as long, and haven't needed one. I'm not breakout-prone, but I'm known to skip washing my face for a full day (blame 2 small kids and a reno project), plus I'm pregnant (which is also a recipe for breakouts). In short, this stuff is the bees knees. No idea how that divine healing is going tho.

Holy wow, talk about intentional design, conscientious practices, and a customer focused…read moreenvironment! I had my first visit to Calm 2 days ago and had to come review. I've been a long time hair pampering entusiast, and have visited many salons good and crappy. This was by far the most thoughtful, serene, and dedicated experience I've ever had getting my hair done. They really have considered every detail of their ambiance, including product samples in the bathroom which I thought was a nice touch! Upon entry, I was immediately greeted and offered a myriad of beverages (including wine) and snacks. Already winning. I saw Nita who is in the training program for a haircut, which meant she did the work step by step while the owner came intermittently to check work and give tips. Might not be everyone's cup of tea as it takes a bit longer, but as an educator I loved being part of someone's learning process. We first consulted on what we were going for, Nita took lots of notes and went over reference photos with me citing what parts I liked of each. Once we were set on a style, she took me to the wash station which was suprisingly ergonomic and comfortable! No awkward neck craning or laying at an awkward angle, these stations were clearly custom designed for comfort. The most relaxing shampoo everrrr. As Nita went through the cut, she used R+Co products which were like a spa day for my hair. She took her time and really dedicated herself to getting the cut right. The owner, Eryn, was a phenomenal mentor and helped Nita check her work throughout the process. All in all, I had a great experience and fell in love with the space. I can't wait to go for a touch up in a couple months!

Gosh, where to begin. It makes me so sad to write this review!…read more I went to Calm with my natural hair, totally untouched by color, extensions, or anything for years. They operate using a teaching model, meaning if you don't have the salon owner as your stylist (who has no room for new clients, so not worth even bothering,) you will be with a stylist with very little experience, with a huge price tag. I asked for a blonde balayage, and showed photos. The junior stylist said it was no problem. When I was done, I had a bright orange halo around the top of my head, and stringy orange strands throughout. I was too embarrassed to leave the house until I could make it back in for a fix. While the fix was complimentary, I was left with permanent damage from the bleaching mistake, and it was an investment of time to get them to fix it. Since then, the junior stylists have made mistakes when coloring my hair multiple times (I saw two of them.) I kept going because they were SO nice as people, and did a good job some of the time, but it was inconsistent at best. And, the mess-ups weren't minor--I'd leave looking pretty weird, again, with the addition of more bleach. Then, I decided to get extensions for the first time with them. If you've never had them before, they are crazy expensive. Naturally, I take care of them meticulously and according to all of their instructions--it's an investment, so I wanted to make sure I did everything right. The first time I got extensions with them, everything was great. The second time around, the stylist misjudged the color, and gave me extensions that made my hair look totally mismatched. They apologized and tried to fix it a bit, but ultimately said it was unfixable without ruining my hair. So, over $1,000 later, I'm stuck with botched extensions. I didn't even complain about it. Then, a few weeks after I got the extensions, I got a keratin treatment with them that was different from their old one, which is when the problems started. Extensions need to be "moved up" every 8 weeks, but, even with meticulous care, mine were falling off my head, damaging and literally making wounds in my scalp, after 1-2 weeks. The first two times this happened, they offered a complimentary fix. I was grateful, and never expressed any irritation around the fact that I was driving 2 hours each way from Sacramento to accommodate for what was most likely caused by their decision to use a new kind of keratin treatment on my hair. Then, it happened a third time. Again, I was gracious and kind, and tried to figure out what might be able to be done. They offered to fix it one last time, and then literally told me that after that, I'm not allowed to come back to their salon. I was totally shocked. Ordinarily I would have just been a bit sad and slightly offended (I genuinely liked them, and was really rooting for their junior stylists, despite all of the issues.) The real problem here though is that I spent over $1,000 on these extensions, and they are refusing, even if I pay them, to provide any services to upkeep them moving forward. This is a clear example of them making a pretty expensive and time consuming mistake, and refusing to clean it up. Worse, they want me to find another salon to fix it, which goes to show how little they think about others in the industry--why would you saddle another stylist with your epic mistake? To add to all of this, I have only had them for two months, and they are guaranteed for 6 months. If you want a very simple service and don't mind overpaying and having them push products on you (and I guarantee you, they will,) then you probably will have a good experience. Overall, my experience with this salon was not only disappointing, but highly unethical. Take your business elsewhere.

I went to Lavender Nails after my wax appointment at European Wax Center because it was recommended…read moreto me by my waxer. I walked in and asked if there was availability for a pedicure. Dina, the owner, sat me in the second chair, but I ended up waiting about 20-30 minutes before being serviced. That was a little frustrating because they were not actually ready, and I would have preferred they were upfront about the wait instead of seating me immediately. I decided to look past it, stayed on my phone, and asked for the massage chair to be turned on while I waited. During my appointment, Dina removed my acrylics and commented negatively about the person who previously did my nails. I jokingly asked if she could do better, and she confidently said yes. I laughed and responded, "We'll see." I was also upfront and told her that if I came back, it meant I liked the service and if I didn't, then that would speak for itself. I got a white-tip deluxe pedicure, and while another employee worked on my nails, I continued talking with Dina. During the conversation, she asked if I knew someone named Joy. When I said no, she responded with something along the lines of, "You're not from the hood." That comment immediately made me uncomfortable because I viewed it as a microaggression rooted in stereotypes. I responded by saying, "That's crazy, why would you think that? I could be from the suburbs." After that, she laughed with another staff member and spoke in her native language. Later that day, after reflecting on the interaction, I realized I really wished I had addressed it more directly in the moment and told her that the comment was inappropriate. There were also other moments during the conversation including her reaction to finding out I was married that gave me the impression that I was not fitting whatever stereotype or perception she had in mind about Black women. That is something I think many Black people in America would understand without needing much explanation. Overall, I will not be returning. Between the unnecessary wait, the service not meeting my standards, and my uncomfortable interaction with Dina, this experience left a negative impression on me. The pedicure itself was not impressive enough to overlook the experience, and overall this place fell short in both professionalism and customer service. I've had much better experiences elsewhere, and I hope Dina takes this review as an opportunity to reflect on how her comments come across to clients moving forward.
