I was in town on vacation and wandered into the store on a whim. I had never shopped at a Bluemercury and I was pleased to see the higher end brands that I like to shop for when traveling overseas. I was greeted by the lovely Keyana, who asked me if I was looking for anything in particular--told her what I needed and she totally nailed the best colors and products! She was very attentive, knowledgeable and helped me tremendously. She even assembled a few samples for me so I could see how my skin would react. I was impressed with their own line, M-61, and I would shop here again based on my experience with her and would ask for her in the future. read more

I'm a longtime customer of this store only because it's the closest place to my home that sells a brand I would otherwise have to make a trip to purchase. They have some brands not otherwise available as close, and I like the variety. However, The service has always been spotty for me, seemingly mood-based. The friendliest and most helpful people I've met in this store are the brand representatives. Today, I walked in the store. I was not greeted or acknowledged. There were several people working, some with customers. The associates who were not busy couldn't break away from chatting with each other to be bothered. Oh, and after 15 minutes of looking around, none of the associates approached me to inquire as to whether I had questions or needed assistance. After departing the store, I decided to call the store and talk about my experience...and wouldn't you know they couldn't be bothered to answer the phone either. I like the quality of their products however, I don't appreciate paying $23 for an empty plastic case in order to get a very small palette of blush! It cost almost as much as the blush. This is the closest location to my home/work BUT easily the worst location in the area when it comes to customer service/product availability. They sold me a defective product (Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels) and wouldn't replace/refund. I like coming to this place for the Kielh's and Bobbi Brown products when I am in town. Most of their stuff is pricey, but there are some good mid-range products too that you can't find at Sephora. My mom and I came here last week and had a wonderful experience with Shelley, who helped my mom find some good makeup products. But unfortunately, we did not have such an experience with Kelly (?) Upon arriving home, we noticed that we didn't receive the free gift bag for buying a certain amount. Which is no big deal; we were in a rush, so everybody probably just forgot about the gift bag at the end of the transaction. I drove back to the store two days later and explained what happened to Kelly, but she kept telling me that they *did* give us the gift bag. As if I would come all the way back to the store just to lie to get another one. She asked me "which bag I was referring to" but I wasn't even aware that there were two different sizes. I only remembered where the bags were on the counter so I pointed to them, but she said "oh no this is the $90 gift bag". Even though we bought $190 worth of stuff. So anyways she finally just gave me the smaller gift bag and I left. I'm very upset that I was treated like some scammer by her. Shelley on the other hand was a total sweetheart! read more

When I asked her a question about a product, she does not assist me in explaining the product. She also does not make suggestions for another product. This Bluemercury, as well as others, is hit or miss. This is the closest make up store to me. Usually, I come in to hi, or re-up on skin care. This place is not cheap. Well, Kelly ( the Asian rep) decided to be mean to me. I asked to use the restroom and was told where it was. Kelly decided to interject and say the restroom was for customers only. This will be the only place I will ever buy makeup in the future. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and provide great service. Damien and everyone are truly wonderful. He has done my makeup for galas in DC (does an AMAZING) job, and recently the entire staff at the shop helped me with a truly huge crisis: I had just flown in from London, opened my bag and realized that my makeup was completely stolen. This was the night before several very important work meetings, gah! The entire staff at Blue Mercury including Damien helped put things together and gave me some very generous samples to help. This was my last visit to this store in Oldtown. I've had the same experience in the past visits. The staff is aloof and snobby. The makeup woman had an attitude like she was doing me a favor. I asked for a facial moisturize the woman showed me a $350 one. After I said it was a bit out of my budget she had an attitude. This store definitely need to train they staff better. I live and work in the Alexandria area, and have shopped at this Blue Mercury location several times. However, each time was increasingly unpleasant. The staff ignored me each time I entered the store, and was rude to me when I asked to purchase a product. The overall attitude of the staff was that of annoyance towards the customers. My first time at the store was horrible, as I was unfamiliar with the company. I was ignored and left wandering around confused, and when I asked for help, the employee shrugged me off and was incredibly rude and impatient with explaining things to me. Each time I have been back, I have been greeted with the same amount of rudeness if not more. I will absolutely not be returning to this location, and will be taking my business elsewhere. I have bushy Asian eyebrows. Regular grooming is required, lest I get grandpa eyebrows, the kind where the hair grows every which way, including straight down into my eyes. So on a recent Saturday afternoon, I called and was able to get a same day appointment. I was about three weeks overdue. Joanne trimmed, waxed (blue hard wax, no strips), and plucked. Despite all of the work, there was zero redness. No random strays. The Old Town Bluemercury is small, with just one treatment room. Same great products as the bigger locations. You can find nearby parking in the neighborhood, just try a block or two off King Street. read more

An update from my previous review. Shopped there yesterday and Damien is awesome! Very knowledgeable! However while Damien was getting a sample for me I asked another associate if she could get a mascara for me. I got the feeling I was interrupting her conversation with her coworker. My husband was there with me and even pointed it out when we left. They need to clean house here and hire more people that are knowledgeable and willing to help, like Damien! read more

I am so done with this place. The past three or four times I have gone, a sales rep from a product manufacturer has tackled me. They dress exactly like the staff and don't have a name tag or anything that identifies them as product pushers, so when I say I'm looking for a particular item, they steer me to whatever line they are selling without me realizing that's what they're doing until I've wasted too much time and have to leave. It's impossible to get an unbiased opinion as to which product is the best for my needs. I won't be going back. So if you go, be forewarned. I suggest asking whomever offers to help you if that person represents the store or a product line. read more

Got a text the night before my wedding ( 8 PM ish )from a makeup artist. Didn't seem like she was interested in doing my makeup based on her verbiage. I'm happy to take my business elsewhere based on the attitude. "Hi (insert name ) it's rachelle at Bluemercury  I was confirming your makeup appointment at 12 noon I have off tomorrow just coming in for you. It's ok if you can't make it just confirm so I don't go there and I have a bride to do at home and I'll have her come to my house.  The cost is $95or a $100 for tomorrow  Thanks rachelle " Follow up: I did cancel and Rachelle offered to do my makeup at her home. My guess is to pocket the money for herself? Follow up: never heard back from Blue Mercury about the issue and attitude. I ended up at Circe and I'm so happy I went there instead! I love BlueMercury for all of their product lines - Bumble&Bumble and Bobbi Brown, especially - but I'm always a bit surprised by how inattentive the staff is. I live in OT and walk-in every month or so for a new product. I have yet to be greeted by anyone that works there and then when I do ask for help - whether to pull outa specific product so I can purchase it or to ask a recommendation on dry shampoo - I always feel like I'm putting them out. I would recommend that the BlueMercury management look into this since I'm clearly not the only person who has noticed this. Again, I don't think it's that the staff is UNfriendly, it's just that they don't go out of their way to be helpful. read more

I work in Old Town and always like to walk around to shops during my lunch. I had a very unpleasant experience here. They don't welcome or greet you when you're the only person in the store. When I walked in, there were 3 people working, but none of them bothered to ask me if I needed any help. Also, they looked at me like I couldn't buy anything, therefore I bought a brush, but I returned it the next day when I know I can get a better service and points in Sephora. So I love Bluemercury because they sell Trish McEvoy, Nars, and Creed. However, this particular location is rude and fails to acknowledge all customers equally. The location in Clarendon provides much better service, which somewhat makes up for the lack thereof at this one. I've never even been asked "May I help you" here. They will look up, see me enter, and continue doing whatever they "weren't" doing. I finally did a customer feedback at the encouragement of my fiancé. I got an email apologizing and the "district manager" called and basically apologized because she (probably) had to (which is what it felt like). Disappointment to say the least. read more

I was referred to the Bluemercury cosmetics store by my wonderful hairdresser just down the street from them, who recommended a concealer that they happen to carry. I walked into the shop, the only customer, to see 3 assistants clustered around the register at the back. None of the three greeted me or said hello. When I eventually attracted the attention of one and explained the product I was looking for, she was stand-offish. The other two whispered and smirked to one another behind their hands while I was finding my product, finally asking me where I was from. The concealer, which to their credit they did have in stock, rang up as more expensive than the staff has told me it was. I won't be back. read more

Came here on a whim to check out the products they offer here. Coming from California, I'm use to big box cosmetic stores like sephora and ulta but it was kind of nice coming into a store where they have a specialize select few such as NARS, Bobbi Brown, bumble and bumble. Was greeted by one of the staff people and asked if I needed any help. Asked if they carry Anastasia Beverly Hills line which they didn't but mentioned Nordstroms carries them. I kept browsing thru the store and remembered there was a duo eyeshadow I really liked from NARS. One of the ladies behind the counter help find the color i was looking for. I just got my brows and upper lip waxed from Joanne, and she was so gentle, she made me feel so comfortable, and very hygienic! Stopped in while I was visiting Old Town Alexandria. The make up artist (per my receipt, Samantha) was great - not pushy but made some good recommendations and gave me some nice samples to take home. I've always been intimidated by this store but the staff could not have been more welcoming and helpful. Where to start.. Laura is AMAZING. I moved two the DC area two years ago and have zero clues for where to get my eyebrows done. I finally decided to go to blue Mercury and scheduled with Laura. She kept my brows tamed but still very natural. My biggest fear is leaving with thin, crazy shaped brows. My arch is perfect. I love that she uses hard wax because I think it hurts less and it also is suppose to cause less wrinkles. I asked her about getting facials because I'm knew to this taking-care-of-my-skin thing. She told me what products to use and and we have since done microdermabrasion. My skin feels amazing and is really clear. Also the prices could not be better, some places serve you brownies and crap but honestly getting my brows done every few weeks(among other things) makes going to the salon expensive. They use high quality products and it's very affordable. 5 fricken stars! read more

She was able assist me in finding my beloved Laura Mercier high coverage concealer & gave me suggestions on other products to try. I'm surprised this store is still striving in Old Town based on the rude employees whom ignore customers. If your not sure what you need this might not be the location 4 you but if you know what you want & want to spend less than 10 mins in the store than yeah this could be the location for you!!!! read more

I've been in this store a few times. They have a variety of products. Unfortunately, they do not sell some of the products that are sold through the website in the actual store (like Clinique). LaShawn. Unfortunately, we were not able to find a pencil or kit close to my eyebrow color. She suggested that I maybe try using my dark brown eyeliner as a brow pencil (which I will try). I did however, find a skin care item that I've been searching for quite some time. LaShawn and her associate were helpful in explaining how to use the product . Overall a good experience. I absolutely loved my visit to Blue Mercury! I love having facials and massages done, and I've been to some very expensive places (resorts, e.g., Ritz Carlton, Homestead, and more) and day spas. I have to say, the best facial I have ever had was at Blue Mercury by Laura. I'm not exaggerating at all. I felt fantastic. This was the best facial I have ever experienced. I was staying at a local hotel and had inquired with their spa, but they were full for the day. I knew that there were some day spas in Old Town, so I set out to get something to eat (also lots of great choices in Old Town) and see what might be available for a facial that afternoon. I was so pleased to be greeted so nicely and so sweetly by the staff at Blue Mercury. As it turned out, they had availability, so I went and had some lunch, then went back for the most wonderful facial I have ever experienced. Laura was incredibly gentle (I even let her do extractions--and I despise those, never allow them). But more than that, she was friendly and soft spoken, and she made the entire experience so luxurious, including a neck massage, décolleté included as part of the facial. My skin was so soft and smooth when she finished. I felt like I looked great, without a bit of makeup on. To make things all the more wonderful, Laura gave me a goodie bag filled with lots of sample and travel sizes of all sorts of things--dry shampoo, moisturizers and serums, clay masks, and so many more. It was a very generous gift. My whole experience was great, from the time I walked in until the moment I left and beyond. I wish I lived in the area, because I can tell you that I'd be in there at least once a month to see Laura for a facial. Thank you so much! Next time I am in Alexandria, I will definitely stop by.
