I wanted to update my review for some [slight] changes!... I've been going to Blue Yoga for 2-ish years now and still love it. This is the best experience I've ever had at a yoga studio (I've been practicing for about 6 years now ... lived in a variety of different US cities & have pretty much also been to all of the yoga studios in Metro Detroit and this is my favorite). Teachers are awesome! Everyone is beyond nice and the studio is super cute & quaint (it's pretty small but the classes don't get super packed... unless you go to Justin's class). Most classes at Blue are a "guided" heated vinyasa flow - they will go through a variety of sequences with you, but ultimately let you flow by yourself. Pro Tips - Free 2 hour parking in nearby parking structures - Great new student offers - Clean facilities (in my last review I said there was no shower.. and I misspoke, they do have a shower!) - Amazing people that instruct & take yoga here - Take any of Justin's classes! Wow! I'm so happy I found my new yogi home. We just moved here from Malibu, so I was nervous about what to expect in a smaller town. Let me just say, I've taken yoga all around the world and Blue Yoga not only has some of the best teachers, but it's also a place you can call home. I SO WANTED TO LOVE this place. I'm traveling for business and am staying at the Townsend across the street. After checking in, I went in to inquire about the schedule/prices/etc... She let me know that because I was staying at the Townsend I could drop in to pretty much any class (weekend mornings require signing up in advance which is expected), and it would be $20 for the class, a mat & yoga towel loan, and a water. Sweet. So I go this afternoon to the 4:45 class, which is listed as a Vinyasa class with an instructor named Kelly. I arrive early, fill out a quick form, $20, everything as promised. Easy as can be, the place is clean and adorable, I'm a happy camper. Let me quickly preface my critique by saying I am an athletic person, but not a yogi. I do a ton of cross training, so while I do yoga in the rotation and know the basics, it's not my sole form of exercise or something I've devoted a ton of time to studying. So class starts. She goes through about 5 minutes of starting asanas, great. I'm feeling good. Then you're ON YOUR OWN for the next 45 minutes. Now, if you go there regularly, or go to yoga regularly enough to have 45 minutes of vinyasas memorized, then this may not bother you (there were several people in the class who clearly feel into this camp). But when I go to a "class" I expect the class to be lead. I've danced my entire life, and if you go to a dance "class" you are typically lead through movements or combinations. They don't just put music on in a room and say "now dance." To me, that's just an "open studio" - which is great if that's what you're looking for, but if there are people there for the first time (I wasn't the only one) a "hey this isn't truly a Vinyasa class, it's just really an open studio time where a bunch of people will be doing yoga on their own in a heated room" sort of heads up would have been appreciated. I'm used to a yoga instructor teaching a vinyasa, and then allowing you to flow through it at your own pace a few times, that's totally ok. But I after about 10 minutes I out of combinations I knew and annoyed, so I just kind of held poses aimlessly marveling at the people in crazy binds and handstands. (Again, cool - but If I wanted to just watch people who are really good at yoga do yoga I would have had a glass of wine while watching YouTube). At the end of class she spent about 5-10 minutes teaching again, but by that point I was so annoyed that it really didn't matter. My zen had been zapped. So the net is - ask before you go into class if the class will be taught. If it's one like this, and you can fill 45 minutes of your time with vinyasas you know by heart, you will love it and likely be inspired to up your game. If you're looking for some guidance to keep the class moving along, this studio may not be for you. Tomorrow I'll be going for a run. read more

This is my favorite yoga studio in the area, and let me tell you - I have done a stint at them ALL! I will get suckered into a few classes at other places because they have some deal they are running, but I always come back to Blue, despite the higher prices. Other studios will drop some insane Groupon deal and the place is overrun for months, but not here. From the second you walk into the studio you are really 'in' yoga, they honor a noble silence in the actual yoga room so that you may meditate or just lay down leading up to class. The reason I started coming here when they opened, and continue to come back, is for Justin Barnes - I won't go into too much detail but if you have never been to one of his classes I encourage you to try one out. He manages to always put a new perspective on poses people have been doing for YEARS. You will often see teachers from other studios in his classes. Many of the people that come here are advanced practitioners who have been practicing daily for many years - so keep that in mind if you are new and try not to get discouraged. The emphasis here is on the mental practice over physical (even if there is some chick popping up into handstand in the first 5 min - they usually get called out anyways). That said, even if you are not into that kind of 'thing' you will still get a great workout. read more

Came back home to Birmingham and wanted to get in some hot yoga over the holidays and was very pleased with Blue Yoga. This will be my go to in the area for drop ins. Pros: Good sized studio Cleaned floor in between classes Knowledgeable and respectful instructor Good variety and poses and length of individual flow Price was fine for a drop in Inside is cute, has a good yoga studio vibe Cons: If you come early for Savasana just know that the door to the studio isn't well placed and you will hear a lot of people who are changing or mingling in the front area (which is very small) Only 1 shower that I could see and 1 bathroom and no real locker room (although there are two changing stalls) read more

Warm, welcoming and zen studio to practice yoga. Attended a vinyasa class with a girlfriend and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Niki led us through a vigorous series of poses with flexibility for each student to add or take away what was needed. As a teacher she was energetic and motivating and not afraid to give hands on adjustments. Loved the vibe and energy. If I lived in town this would be my go to studio. I was not able to take advantage of the first class free and $25 seems steep as a walk in fee. They do offer packages and specials so this seems to be the best value. For the time being I will try to drop in as I can. read more

This is now my favorite yoga studio. Of course that's because my favorite teacher, Justin Barnes, is co owner and he can do what he wants with his class. I love that the room is hot and that I sweat out all my issues. I love that after an hour I cant believe its done. I love that I feel high after class every single time I have gone. I love the music and the space they have created. I love the small touches of lavender cold clothes on your eyes with massages here and there. I love how crowded and buzzing it is after the class. You are forced to be one with everyone and I personally like that happy buzzing feeling of friendly happy faces embracing you. I can feel the love there and I am glad they are so close. I highly recommend this place. Oh and i really love the floor because its spongy and soft. Its my perfect place. read more

I am new to this area and relatively new to Yoga. I checked out several yoga studios in the area and this is by far my favorite. It is warm and welcoming from the yoga instructors, to the fellow yoga students to the person at the desk. It exudes a happy vibe. Everyone is super friendly and I quickly felt a part of this yoga community. I have only done Slow Burn because I am new to yoga and my favorite instructors are Mary and Kelly. They are both so amazing - I always feel great when I leave their class. Their classes are challenging but relaxing and peaceful at the same time. This yoga studio is definitely a gem and I feel fortunate to have found it! read more

I tried Yin with Caryn Gallagher last night and loved it! Caryn is awesome and the studio was warm and inviting. I'm not sure what took me so long to check this place out, but I will be back. I was staying at The Townsend Hotel right across the street so I though I would pop in for a class. The music was extremely LOUD and I was treated so rudely that I left without taking the class. The music and the attitude were very un-yoga like. Do not waste your time here. read more
