You'll find that when you're on NC 106, that you'll find several overlooks to take advantage of. One that you'll probably want to stop at is the Blue valley overlook. Blue valley overlook gets its name because, taken from their website: "the natural haze that shades the valley and its surrounding carpet of mountains."
Very nicely described, because the "carpet of mountains" stretches on and on as far as the eye can see...it's definitely a beautiful site where you can sit and just reflect.
One treat which I wasn't expecting at all was the small waterfall directly across from the Blue valley overlook lot, which very likely isn't named, probably is intermittent and very likely fed by rain water (I'd have to come back during a dry spell to confirm). Not super impressive, but still very cool!
There are several overlooks up and down 106 that aren't very far from one another, including a very close Osage mountain overlook, where you can pick up Bartram trail. Each stop offers a little more of Blue valley.
Just a few miles from Highlands, NC, it's a great drive and a prelude for even more fantastic hiking or waterfall hunting. I hope you have time to check this overlook out! read more
