Was in town for a Bachelorette Party, and we stopped in here when walking by on the street. Adorable little place. The lady behind the counter was very helpful and told us all about the different flavors they had to offer. The cotton candy was to die for! I wish I would've bought a bottle.

"I wanna drink a little moonshine in the sunshine of a Summer day" Erick Baker…read more Except for it being a sunny autumn day, this was my exact thought upon discovering Grandaddy Mimm's Distilling, and that's exactly what we did. The Distillery has a great rustic feel, but with a slight grunge feel to it. The bar is front and center upon entering, with shiny bottles lined up everywhere. We were greeted right away and chose to go with their sampler, any 8 tastes for $7. Now don't get too excited, they are thimble sized, but it's a great way to find the shine you'll love. On this day there wasn't a bad on on the batch. They offer cocktails made with all of their moonshine and spirits. I ended up picking up two bottles, The first was their "Barrel Aged Shine" a limited edition, 109 proof, 2 year corn whiskey shine. It was, and I say was, because it only lasted Thanksgiving weekend, a fantastic moonshine whiskey. Perfect for a stiff old fashioned. I am tempted to make the three hour round trip to pick up another one. The second was their Sorghum Rum. I'm not sure if there's a lot of competition in the sorghum rum space, but this is definitely a winner. A very sweet sipping rum, absolutely delicious on its own or in a cocktail. I am definitely pacing this bottle to make sure it lasts until I can make it back to Blairsville. They have a stage and different events, so it would be fun to come back and hang out longer. Grandaddy Mimm's Distilling shines!

"Civilization begins with distillation." --William Faulkner…read moreWho would have thought we'd find such an excellent example of civilization while exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains? House of Applejay was an unexpected adventure during our Thanksgiving weekend. A simple sign advertising the distillery drew us in. Not really knowing what to expect, we were immediately impressed by the clean, classy, and charming interior. It struck a perfect balance between bar and retail shop, with beautiful bottles displayed all around. We were warmly greeted by the owner, Carole, and the most dapper bartender, John. John did a fantastic job introducing us to the distillery, which specializes in liqueurs and spirits that combine European tradition with Georgia mountain flair. He went above and beyond, offering not only samples but also detailed descriptions of each pour. He was as entertaining and informative as any YouTuber--something we never would have expected. This wasn't a sales pitch; it was excellent customer service delivered with pride and a hint of well-deserved braggadocio. After his presentation, John gave us time to decide which cocktails we wanted to try. We chose the Mountain Old Fashioned and the Applejay Mule. The Mountain Old Fashioned featured bourbon and their Winter Cherry Mountain Liqueur, while the Applejay Mule showcased their Applejay Liqueur paired with blood orange ginger beer. Both were absolutely delicious! All of their spirits are available for purchase, and it was hard not to buy every bottle. I ultimately settled on the Winter Cherry Mountain Liqueur, which I'm frugally savoring at home to make my Old Fashioneds extra special. Highly recommended for a great time and delicious cocktails. We will definitely be back!

It totally ruined our experience and we will never go again.

I love me some cinnamon whiskey so I thought cinnamon would be my fave. Wrong! My fave turned out to be mint chocolate chip, and I'm not even a chocolate fan! This moonshine is very flavorful and rich in taste. I would drink it as an after dinner drink, served on the rocks but I think it would also taste great added to coffee. They also have moonshine "whiskey" in 2 flavors but these were a bit too strong for my taste and didn't really taste like whiskey although a lot of people enjoyed it. The owners are great! So approachable. Raymond the owner even pulled out a prohibition whiskey bottle to show me. Never been opened and he has been offered a hefty sum of money for it but he still keeps it. Doug - his soon - is very knowledgeable with the process and can answer any questions. I was here for an after wedding party so we had our own music and could bring our own booze in, too. Take a not, you can rent out the space for your party. Overall: highly recommend. They offer free samples so you know what you are buying.

It's a very large building (a industrialize feel) with what feels like multiple rooms (one room connected to main room has a stage) with quite a large open air patio with high top tables and patio furniture with padding and tables. Inside has tables, a HUGE Projection TV on the wall, a long belly-up to the bar, also a private room (The Legacy Room) for private events. It also has a store inside selling the spirits the distillery makes (which by the way is made on site). We loved the laid back feel and wide openness of the building. We were told that once a month they have line dancing/swing dancing and hire two instructors to teach. The music isn't live to continue dancing and practicing what you learn. Apparently the first night had about 60-70 people. They clear the entire floor of tables so there is plenty of room to quick up your heels. However there is a $10 cover charge. Sorry I didn't take a pic of the flyer on the door so you'll have to call and ask what night it happens but I believe it's a Friday night and right now once a month. As it gets popular, we were told maybe twice a month. They offer tables games and cards to play while tasting their Bourbon, Gin, Vodka, Tequila and mixed drinks they sell. Our guys tried a flight for $25 with generous pours. Most they liked, some not so much, but would like to go back and try their Old Fashioned. There is a very long ramp for accessible access or stairs whichever is needed. Ample parking but I'm sure on those nights when line dancing is taught it could get full. The bathrooms are gender neutral as seen in the picture. The guy behind the bar was very nice and shared lots of info on their spirits production. It was nice to have a bowl of saltine crackers but they were stale. I guess it doesn't matter because they are most likely to use when taste testing. We will be back!

They also have a tour of the old power station that now houses the Dam Whiskey distillery. The tasting costs $5 if you take the tour which costs $32 pp. We did the tasting first and you get minuscule amounts of their wares that is just barely enough to taste although the whiskeys were quite good. The tour on the other hand is definitely something to be avoided. There is no active distilling taking place and the old power station houses barrels of distillate being aged. The tour guide pointed out where there generators were located in the past and a flooded area where new generators were placed in the past. The structure is filthy, dusty and now houses remnants of their Haunted House tour (around Halloween.) This place is an OSHA nightmare with water puddles to walk through and rather dangerous staircases and debris on the floors. It would have been nice if a minimal effort might have been made to show what the power station might have looked like in its heyday. We were glad to escape unscathed except for the cost. Although the setting is admittedly spectacular, acres of hilly vineyards with views of the mountain behind, and the patio was certainly fancy, the tables each with fire pits in the center providing cheery warmth, the tasting experience itself was sub-par and overpriced. It lacked the authentic feel I've seen in other wineries and seems more of a tourist destination. First thing I noticed is the shockingly high tasting fee of $35 for a flight of 4 2-ounce pours of their choice. No substitutions allowed! Either these are some spectacularly great wines or this is a major rip-off. I passed. But since I was here I decided to have a glass. I got one of their estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon. It was around $16 but since I was here. It was good, but certainly not worth the $48 they charge for a bottle. For the $35 do you get individual attention, descriptions from the bartender about the wines and about their winery? No. You get 4 labeled glasses to take back to your table. Not worth it. Find another place less touristy, more authentic. That shouldn't be hard. There are like 65 wineries in the area!

William Butler Yeats With the beautiful backdrop of the rolling hills of North Georgia, Yonah Mountains Vineyards delivers real wine and real romance. Whether it's for an afternoon date, or a full out wedding among the rows of vines, it's hard not to feel love in the air. Great outdoor seating, both covered and uncovered, place you right above the beautiful vineyard and allow you to take it all in. Yonah Mountains Vineyards separates itself from the others by providing familiar wines such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay etc as opposed to the traditional Muscadine wines of the south. The wine itself is decent, but definitely not near the quality of the west coast wines, but all were enjoyable. I particularly liked their Genesis 12, a red wine blend, and their Viognier, an impressive white. Wine flights are around $60 with a choice between white, red, or mixed. Bottles run around $40-100. A little pricey for the product, but then again, it's the whole experience that you are buying, and it's money well spent. Yonah Mountain Vineyards strikes the perfect balance between classy and casual. You'll be just as comfortable in jeans as in a tux or a horrid bridesmaid dress. Cheers!
