The first couple of times I visited the Blue Post, I was part of the Haunted Pub Crawl. There simply wasn't time to take in the atmosphere and look around. It does explain the jar of suckers on the bar though and my what a delightfully gruesome story that is! Since then I've been back several times and have enjoyed the people and the offerings immensely! The bar used to be just beer but now they have all the liquor you could ever need! The staff is friendly and attentive which is always a plus, however as it gets later of course they are busier and you may have to wait for a drink. The music on the jukebox is usually good, and I like to get my drink and sit on the couches in the "breezeway" where they closed in the alley and made it part of the building. This little area separates the main bar and it's pool tables from the back room with video games, air hockey, and more pool tables. Ah, Ms Pacman, how I love her when I've got a nice drink in my hand! The Blue Post is really a nice chill place to go and hang out and if you hang around the bar, you'll find lots of nice regulars to chat with. Also really great place to go early and enjoy all the games with no wait or crowd. I don't smoke, so of course I hate it, but it will be a moot point soon as there is a statewide ban on smoking going into effect in early 2010. read more

Been coming to this place for ten years, hackled me entire time at the door, on a Sunday, made me fill out a new membership card and still denied me because my penmanship was poor. We went on a Saturday evening earlier than the normal bar crowd because we had people in town and wanted to catch up. I was warned by a mutual friend the bartender was in a foul mode via text before we arrived, but didn't think much of it since we were going for the games. When I arrived and ordered a seltzer and lime the bar tender accused me of having a fake ID. He took it to the light, scratched it, kept it for a few minutes, and told me "it was a good one." At this point I just laughed because I'm 32. When my drink was ready he motioned for me to take it from the bar, it was not seltzer but ginger ale and lime. I politely asked if they had seltzer because that was what I ordered. He did oblige, acting annoyed. That is what it is, but when we went to cash out we were still billed for the drink that was trashed. Probably could have done something but and at that point it was getting busy and that bartender had left for the day. read more

I lurve the Blue Post. I've been here several times while visiting one of my BFFs and most times it's pretty packed, but a couple of times there's been hardly anyone there, which I kind of prefer. Located in an alley off Front St., this place is ever-so-slightly off the beaten and, although it does get packed, I'd argue that it's with locals rather than tourists. Errrr, except for the Haunted Pub Crawl folks. Decent beer selection, great prices, and always something on crazy-ridiculous special ($2 domestic bottles, $3 pints, $4 drinks, etc.) and their taps switch out regularly. Plus: mmmm, Anchor Steam bottles. Good bartenders, too. I always enjoy an epic drunken air hockey tournament showdown, and this is the place to do it. Also: skeeball. YES. Plus, late-'90s pinball machines. And, as the name of the place so aptly suggests, billiards tables galore! There's always a ghost tour congregating out in the formerly blood-soaked alley, so I reckon it's haunted (most things are, it seems, in this fair city), but I haven't, you know, seen anyone in the bathroom mirror, etc. Apparently the joint used to be a brothel, in Paradise Alley of Old Wilmington's red light district. I do, however, get chills every time I cross through the now-indoor alley that you must cross to get from the front room to the back. Creeeeepy. Oh, but, back to the bathrooms: this one's got tons of big stalls. I've actually never waited in a line at the ladies' even when the joint has been slammed. There are usually paper towels all over the floor (people are such slobs), but otherwise it stays quite clean. It seems like sometimes the door locks disappear, but they are always quickly replaced. I really dig this place! I stopped in Wilmington for a night on my way back home from Florida and was lucky enough to have some locals show me around to a few bars and explain what Wilmington is about. Of the places we went this place was certainly my favorite. Bluepost is more than a billiards hall. There is a great full bar with an excellent selection of beers. Moreover there is a game room in the back featuring all the games you want: skeeball, foosball, air hockey and video arcade . And the bar is part of the haunting legends in Wilmington. In between the main billiard room and the arcade there is a small alley that is dark with some red lanterns that creates an interesting quiet mood between the two rooms if you want to mellow out for a few or share a smooch with a special someone. The other thing I enjoyed was the different types of people I found there, casual to dressed up, everyone enjoys the Bluepost. Prices are great too. Being from Boston I'm and used to pricey drinks but I can get a PBR pounder for 1.50?! Love. Next time I visit Wilmington this will be my first stop for a drink. read more

Blue post did an excellent job enforcing COVID precautions when I was there last weekend. The bouncer did a great job explaining the new rules and they had someone walking around cleaning and monitoring mask wearing. Felt a lot more comfortable there than some other bars in town. read more

You don't have to play pool to enjoy Bluepost. It's a well-rounded bar popular with the mid-to-late 20s and 30s crowd. Lots of cute guys here (although they are too scared to actually talk to me), hot ladies (for you boys), and a sweet jukebox that plays a mix of Stevie Wonder, Avett Brothers, etc. Unfortunately on one visit a patron played Kings of Leon about 10 times in a row, but usually customers make pretty good jukebox picks. I love the "alley room" that runs between the main room and the back area - the red lanterns, couch, and low lighting are very romantic and remind me of a Wong Kar Wai film. They need to beef up their beer list though. It's just not as impressive as it should be. Also, the mixed drinks are really inconsistent. Sometimes the bartenders poor them too strong to the point that they are just nasty. And the bathrooms are kind of in shambles (at least the women's is). But the place has character and I actually feel like an adult here, compared to most other spots Downtown. It's a good place to start the night or hang out for a couple hours. read more

Spending a Saturday evening in downtown Wilmington my little sister suggested we stop into Blue Post Billiards for an after dinner beer and some fun games. Having lived here for several years she is a regular but i've never been so I was excited to try a new spot! Blue Post is definitely off the beaten path, but the grudge hole-in-the-wall-ness is definitely part of it's charm! The space is dark and pretty simple; bar, pool tables and games in the back, but it works very well. The game selection is much smaller than what i'm used to in Raleigh (we're really spoiled with Boxcar and Level Up aren't we?) but the games they did have were cheap and very fun! I especially enjoyed their basketball and air hockey. My Blue Moon was cold and came with an orange, and for $4 I was very happy! My only small gripe was the bathrooms were pretty grudgey as well...This may be charming for the rest of the bar, but I prefer my bathrooms a bit cleaner. I had a ton of fun tonight and will definitely be back. My sister told me that when it's later and more crowded it's not quite as fun, but stopping in around 7PM we had a great time! read more

This place is awesome! It's a hole in the wall, but they've got great beer, about a half dozen pool tables, some great arcade games, and decent prices. I was here for a bachelor party back in December. We arrived around 8 or so, after dinner, and the place was relatively quiet, so we grabbed a table in the back and had some beers. By 11, the place was hopping, but we never had to wait for a beer, and there's always someone walking around to take orders, if you don't feel like dealing with the bar. Blue Post is one of those places that you walk in and immediately see a dozen people you know. Well, I do at least, because I am a former "Mr. Wilmington," you see. It's got all the things that make a bar great: killer jukebox, great selection of alcohol (now with liquor!), cute gals, pool, ping-pong, video games, the best jukebox around, and perhaps best of all: elbow room. This place does get crowded, but not annoyingly so. It's usually the last stop for the night before home, so expect to run into someone late night and you might just get lucky. Maybe. read more

the Blue Post is one of my favorite Wilmington bars. They have two regulation-size pool tables, skee-ball, arcade games, and couches scattered about in dimly lit corners. From the street it looks like a sketchy dive bar, with an alleyway entrance, but it is actually quite large. The interior is covered with interesting art, but in a subtle and unpretentious way. I wouldn't call the Blue Post "cheap," but it is moderately priced. Drink specials here are weak; usually one obscure specialty beer for $3 a pop. My favorite thing about the blue post: In the men's bathroom, just above the sinks, is a ratty-looking plastic tray used as a paper towel dispenser. On the tray is scribbled with a Sharpie: "Grab One. You're worth it." - I don't know, that just always cracks me up. read more

The Blue Post is one of the best bars I've ever been to, and the funny thing is I used to go there when they were strictly a beer bar. No they serve booze and I'm missing out! UNACCEPTABLE - My British friend and I went to visit a friend in Wilmington this past weekend, and they refused to let him in because he didn't have his passport - only a UK driving license. This is unacceptable and completely unwelcoming to foreign tourists - not only is my friend 27, but his license is 100% valid. We have NEVER been denied entry to a US bar with his license, EVER - and he's come to visit me four times now. You cannot expect foreign tourists to carry their passports around for bar entry. It's bad for business, it's unacceptable, and it's not indicative of Southern hospitality. read more

Love Blue Post!! Very friendly staff, delicious drinks, pool tables, video games, SKEE-BALL, foosball, air hockey...this place is fun! Like some of the other reviews said, it does get very crowded later on weekend nights. I usually go early in in the evening to avoid the crowds. The bartenders are attentive, friendly, and efficient. Like most bars downtown, it is members only, but you can get a membership for $1. I love the atmosphere, it is a really old, historical building. The haunted pub tours even go through there. If you can, grab a spot in the indoor alley that used to separate the buildings, it is an excellent place to people-watch. read more

Part of me hates reviewing this place 10/10 because it'll bring more people to this incredibly awesome bar, but it means so much to me that I have to do it. This is by far my favorite bar in the country. There's a juke box to set the musical tones necessary; the bartenders are extremely friendly, and do their best to put drinks in hands as fast as possible. The bouncers here are incredibly rude. I accidentally left my wallet at the bar and when I came back to get it the bouncers thought it was a joke and wouldn't let me run in for 5 seconds and grab it. After finally convincing the guy to go find my wallet he found it within 5 seconds and gave it to me. The bouncers are paid to ensure the safety of the guests and they should have been better about helping out someone who was just trying to get home with their wallet. Never too busy, with a great staff, it's a nice spot to meet friends, hang out alone, or meet new people. This is always a great bar to visit for a night out. The pool tables are fun and the mini arcade give this place a fun twist. Blue Post is always on my personal go-to list if I'm downtown with friends on a Friday or Saturday night. Docked a star because I can't say the cocktails are the greatest. In fact, I don't remember a time when I enjoyed a good margarita or even a good screwdriver there. Blue Post is like an arcade with a bar in it!! Each time I come here I always remember those childhood memories of Donkey Kong and Super Mario Brothers. It's basically split into 2 sections, one side with games and one side where the bar is located. in between the 2 sides there is a breezeway where people smoke. This place gets packed on the weekends with more local folks than visitors. Prices on drinks are great and you are sure to have a good time. If not, you can always walk to another bar. read more

I love the Bluepost. I'm getting to the point in my life (at the tender age of 25) where it's not as much fun to get all hooched out and dance up on some sweaty strangers in a super creepy basement club. Not for me anymore. So, a nice laid-back pool hall with an inconspicuous alley entrance is right up my...alley. Wow, that was clever. And they have PING PONG!!!!!!!!!! Now one of my favorite past times. After a few beers I don't mind taking off my shoes (which I shouldn't because they probably haven't mopped in there since 1986) and getting down and dirty with the paddle. Minus one star because it's only beer. I'm not really a beer girl. I have to be in the right kind of mood. Maybe they'll let me bring my own vodka next time. Oh, and only one bathroom stall with a lock. I hate having to try to maneuver myself onto the toilet while trying to hold the stall door shut. Never attractive. 4/21/08 Update: I hate to say I have to downgrade them to 3 stars. They have removed the ping-pong table (GASP!!) and replaced it with some skee ball machines. Which are fun for about 3 minutes. Plus, something I never mentioned in the first review...smoke. Man, the smoke in their is bad. The last time we went I had to leave within 10 minutes. We were visiting Wilmington for the first time and found ourselves hanging out here on a Sunday night. The place wasn't too crowded. I liked the variety of games they had. I was visiting some good friends in Wilmington this week and they took me out to this fabulous billiards spot. Fantastic beer menu and well priced! The juke box was fun and had a great selection. I'm a huge fan of this concept. It's like a grown up arcade without the goofiness of a Dave and Buster's. We had a big wedding group check this place out and it was a really good way to get to know the other people in town for the wedding and have fun in a relaxed environment. I wanted to play some arcade games and have a few drinks so I was referred to this place by my uber driver. It is tucked away between buildings and a noticeable sign is not visible which makes this location intriguing. You do have to pay for a membership because of NC regulations, which make no sense to me. The door man charges 1 dollar for membership and you can bring in a guest. Besides this obscure rule the interior is quite nice and separated into three sections. The first is lined with pool tables and adequate bar. The middle section is more like a corridor to relax in. The furthest section has about 20 games ranging from skiball, pinball, to air hockey. The machines take quarters and most games range from 50 cents to a dollar. It's quite dark and dingy in there, reminiscent of a dive bar that will trap you in for hours. read more

Favorite place for me and my friends to go out (as a group). It's a large bar with plenty of places to just kick back around tables, get a game of pool going, or (of course) it has the appeal of arcade games for those who want a unique, drunken challenge. The service is good; I've never had to wait too long for a drink, even when it's busy, the bouncers are always kind (even when they have to ask you to leave...I would know), and the waiters/waitresses are quick to get booze without having that pesky, hovering-insect tendency (you know...checking back every two seconds, etc). The crowd is very diverse but very chill (I've never felt out of place here, whether I was way overdressed or totally under-dressed) and the location is actually pretty sweet. At first, I was turned off by the "down-the-alley" entrance, but it's really kind of nice to get off the beaten path of front street. Most of all, they have a wide selection of beers, some wines, and a full liquor shelf...and nothing is overpriced! Okay, I actually just can't say enough nice things about Blue Post. The bar is okay, but the door staff is beyond ridiculous. The forty something door man was old enough to know better than to be so rude and disrespectful to local patrons. I've been going to tbis establishment for 20 years, but will never ever ever go back. After carding our obviously old enough group of professionals (doctors, lawyers, etc.) which included two bar membership holders, they set about a security inspection that DHS would consider excessive. This place discriminates!!! Do not go here!!! Very poor management! I went here with a couple friends-we were all of age and just looking to play some pool. The Hawaiian/Asian woman checking ids at the front didn't even check my friends ID, she just said no she can't get in. We asked her why and she said: "I reserve the right to not say". With my other friend, who was born and raised in MD, and in his 30s was IDed and she falsely accused him of having a fake ID just because he's from Maryland. He said "okay well let me get a cop, I just saw one around the corner, can I have him come scan it". She said no. He did it anyway to see if anything would change. The cop even asked her "what's your deal" because she was so stubborn and when the cop showed her how to see if it was fake, she refused to look. He angrily said to her, "we get a lot of complaints about you guys. You may be privately owned, but your discriminating". He then looked at us and said I would find any other place, ANY OTHER PLACE, rather than here because these people are notorious for this kind of thing. We ended up going to Ortons which is a MUCh better pool house. ALSO we tried calling management to give them feedback and ask why that happened and they never called back. The woman who IDed us also would not let us speak to a manager. She rudely said that managers are for "customers only". read more

I have been there several times and they were great up until last night when I got asked to leave and my VALID lisense taken from me bc they claimed after an HOUR after I was there, DRINKING, that my id was fake. I am 29 years old. First off IF I used a fake and I was under 21 I wouldnt be dumb enough to use one saying I was 29!!! And 2nd shouldn't that be your cocky bouncer's job from the get go, who I am probably older than... Like you have ONE job. The only answer they gave me last night was to call the police. A little dramatic. Came back today and got it and the bartender was super rude for no reason. And technically if the really truly thought it was fake they wouldn't have returned it with no questions asked. It was the weirdest thing ever. There is a sign up that says if you leave your cards there overnight you get charged automatically for gratuity...which I get that, but if you're asked to leave and can't, then what. Is this some lame way to make extra dollars?!?! I really don't get the whole thing considering we had a great night there two nights before. Just saying. read more

Blue post is always where my friends and I go first for the amazing vibes and cool atmosphere. After a year of going to blue post I've noticed a pattern. The bartenders are pretty much always rude, and are never inviting. I understand that the weekends in Wilmington are crazy busy because of students and travelers especially in the warmer weather, but there's no excuse for being rude to the people who keep your business going. Last night my boyfriend bought himself a beer and a margarita for me since I'm not a huge beer or even alcohol drinker. The bartender serving us was an older woman and she had seemed to be in a horrible mood. At first I was like okay, I completely understand. You're dealing with drunk people all night, so I see how you can be annoyed and stressed. I'm a barista myself and I have those days more often than not. After being served, I tasted my drink and there was no tequila in my drink. It tasted like a Capri sun or something. After getting numerous opinions, I reluctantly went to complain (given my experience with customer service); I hate complaining. I talked to one of the male bartenders and politely *and most importantly* I was sober and super nice about the issue. He proceeded to say "well you're going to have to talk to her about the problem" I said I understand and talked to the woman who made my drink. Right when I explained the situation she sarcastically held up a bottle and said "it's tequila silver, you can't taste it because it's so smooth"...then I began to say, ok well I really think there's a problem, I cannot taste anything, and the people I've asked, cannot taste a thing except for juice. Longest part of the story short, they didn't give me a refund or even consider making me a new drink since I drank literally 4 sips out of it, and said instead that for $3 that he'd put more shots in it. That is so ridiculous after already paying $7 for juice. I am so disappointed in the way this bar is ran and I can assure everyone that I will not be recommending or going to blue post again. The one star that I have rated this place for is the kind bouncers who recognize my friends and I each time we go and who are beyond friendly to everyone. read more
