I love Mediterranean food. Greek, Lebanese, Turkish... it doesn't matter the time of day, it doesn't matter if I've just had a full meal, it doesn't matter whether it comes from a place with linen tablecloths or a takeout counter - I want it all. Obviously, even just walking in the door at Blue Olive was bound to make me happy. My first visit was just for a dessert to cap off the day. Enter the Loukoumades - fried balls of dough that arrived drizzled in all kinds of honey goodness. They reminded me of a Dutch treat I used to love when I lived abroad (oliebollen for anyone keeping track) except they're served smaller so you can eat a whole bunch of them at once. New obsession. My second visit, though, blew the first out of the water. Why? Well, a few reasons but let's start with Drew. Blue Olive only has one server and she is an absolute saint. I love feeling like a regular when I go places and Drew was quick to make me feel like I had just come home to my imaginary Greek relative's house for dinner. I also love watching the hilarious dynamic between her and Jimmy, the owner, who's very quick to make the rounds whether it's just to say hi to customers or to pour the wine. Second, the vibe of the place just really floats my boat. Once the sun sets, I love the low lights and the little nooks and crannies that let you feel some privacy even though it's a pretty small spot. It's the perfect setting for the kind of personal attention that you'll get and proved to be a great spot for a nice dinner out with friends. Third, well, this one's obvious: the FOOD. The Flaming Saganaki blew. my. mind. I actually can't believe that I had never tried it until now but it was delicious. Not to mention a bit shocking at just how much flame bursts out of that sucker. I had a nice ravioli in a sundried tomato cream sauce that was good enough (the actual sundried tomatoes were some of the best I've tasted) but next time I'll definitely go with one of their more classic plates. I had total meal envy of the souvlaki dishes and was in awe of the chicken spanakopita special. Check the photos - you'll see why. Consider the last star on reserve while I figure out my go-to menu item but ultimately, I'm a big fan of this spot.

Wow. I was surprised how good and fresh the food. The mossaka is very light but short eggplant. Still, I was disappointed it wasn't a bigger piece. The haddock is delicious and very light if you get it with rice. Skip french fries as a side and always go for the roast potatoes.

I'll start by saying the service at this restaurant was great. Our server was very friendly and helped us out with the menu. We ate here for the first time last week for lunch and it will most likely be the last time unfortunately. The restaurant was empty and I now know why.... Our meal was just "okay"..nothing to rave about...the roasted potatoes tasted as though they were cooked prior to us arriving (possibly day old roasted potatoes), and they are very stingy on the amount of food. The pita wraps may have had 2 slivers (and I mean slivers) of red onion in them and there was about 4 bites of chicken in the entire wrap. The couple of bites of chicken and two slices of tomato and potatoes would be about half of what you would get at any pita place for about $7 rather than the $10-$12 charged here. Know that you're basically paying to sit down at a nice restaurant, but know if you're going in for "lunch" you're paying for the atmosphere, not the food. Aside from tasting like they were day-old cooked potatoes, I decided to give them a go. They were neatly arranged on the plate (to take up a lot of the white space). When I cut through one and picked it up with my fork, I now know why they were neatly arranged on the plate...because they were burnt on the underside. The entire meal left me with a burnt after-taste that the mint they provided with the bill helped "attempt" to get rid of. This was a very beautiful and quaint little restaurant but very disappointing that they were so stingy on the food. I'm reluctant to go back in fear of leaving hungry again.

Greek Taverna. ela! has a nice authentic Greek ambiance and the servers were pleasant and just attentive enough. But the food let us down for quantity and price. The three of us always like a variety so often order Appetizer platters when they are offered. The ela! website shows the Menu and the appy platter is listed as $60. The platter we received was priced at $75 and while it says is feeds 4 there were only two of each item so someone went without or two people had to share. For $75.......come on. A tad over priced. The appy platter also was filled in the middle with french fries, not Roasted Greek Potatoes like I would expect in a Greek Restaurant. Nary a single Roasted Greek Potato to be seen. A side of Saganaki is always required but a smallish piece of melty cheese for $20!!! Way over the top price for what you get. I realize food prices went up during covid but instead of bring them back down where they should be, all restaurants are holding the high prices. ela! has decent food but they are way over priced for amount you actually get. Greek food is very easy to cook at home so we will not be back.

I honestly haven't heard about this spot and for a place with such a large Greek community I almost feel like we are lacking in Greek options. I ordered the chicken gyro plate, but I felt it was necessary to try much of the menu. So I added a skewer of each of the chicken and pork souvlakia, and a side of pork gyro. And when I seen moussaka, an all time favourite meal from childhood I had to throw it in. Let's start with the moussaka. It was disappointing. Flavour was almost there but it barely had any eggplant, which is kinda the star of the show. I wouldn't say it was bland but could've used more salt and maybe some garnish to pretty it up. The pork gyro was pretty good, well seasoned and cooked. Only issue I have with gyro here in Halifax is that it doesn't exist. I'm used to ground lamb and pork on a spit not slices of pork. But over all tasty. The souvlaki was delicious, I would say the pork was much tastier then the chicken. The chicken was a bit dry and had a tad too much citrus flavour that over powered everything. But the pork souvlaki definitely won the show. Last and the least, the chicken gyro plate. The biggest disappointment of the meal. The salad lacked any form of dressing, it had the slightest hint of citrus. The potatoes were okay, but nothing noteworthy. The rice was good but it's almost hard to mess that up. The chicken again was seasoned well but it was a bit dry and was smothered in citrus. The tzatziki was what I like to call canadianized. Barely the taste of garlic or anything really. It was almost like just plain yogurt. The pita was sliced up and the chicken smothered in the sauce on top of the pita. If I have a next attempt I would more than likely remember get sauce on the side. Pita would've been better if it was grilled. Over all I give 2.6/5 stars. I rated it a 3 to be nice. I would try this spot again but I don't think it would be a staple. Nothing really stood out that would make me miss this place in the future.

What I did love was the fried calamari! It was both crispy and moist and just loved it. I tried the Nova Scotia wine, Lightfoot & Wolfville Flora and really enjoyed it!
