I always stop there when I go to Halifax. I love the food both sweet and salty. And the owner is super friendly.

Stopped in because they had the olive oil I wanted and was tempted by the baklava at the counter. Best baklava I've ever had in Halifax.

While some Haligonians swear by Pizza Corner, the four great food destinations surrounding North and Agricola (FRED.food, Ace Burger Co, Café Aroma Latino, Mid East Food Centre) make up my top pick of the city's culinary corners. My Lebanese lunch here today finally checked off the last of these four spots with as much success as I've had on any other side of the streets. It may not look like much inside (or out) but the MEFC delivers where it counts. The bottom line is that for $11, I got more fresh food than I could finish with more choices than I could get my head around. Four kinds of fatayer, various sizes of kibbe and samosas, falafel, chickpea salad, artichoke salad...the list goes on. Unlike Mezza, a restaurant I have a lot of love for, Mid East has a more home-cooked feel. The food may not be quite as dazzling (dry falafel, for example) but if you think of it like a great Lebanese diner, you won't be disappointed. Order from the nice guy behind the counter then pay on the grocery side of the shop as you leave. I love cooking ethnic foods and so it's a joy to find everything Middle Eastern and then some in one shop. There is everything from fresh and ready made baklava ( at least a half dozen varieties) to the rose water, filo sheets and nuts to make your own. On the savory side there are barrels and barrels of olives, grape leaves (to make your own stuffed dolmata), stuffed peppers and other delicacies for appetizers. Not to mention rows of canned and bulk dry beans and flours and my favorite section of all...the bulk spices. You have to try the sumac, it's great on so many things, especially Fatoush - the best salad ever. Not only are there fridges and freezers with every imported delicacy, there are stacks of fresh pita made right next door at the Fancy Lebanese Bakery. The staff are friendly and if you're too hungry to wait until you get home, you can eat falafel and other Middle Eastern delicacies in the cafe at the back of the shop. read more

Mid East Food Center/Fancy Lebanese Bakery. The reason both of these are listed is because it is two stores in one. One part is all the groceries and the other is a area with a few tables for eating. The menu looked very good and there were people eating in as well as take out. You can also buy various foods from the display, all look good. Hummus, Tabouli, Greek Salad, Samosa etc. (pict of menu) I choose to buy some pastries. As you know the pastries are all done in that wonderful filo shell. This one was filled with roasted cashews. It was great. I also tried something called, Halwa Chocolate ( I am told by one of the owners that it is sometimes spelled Halva.) I love chocolate, so this was a nice treat. This is a stop for locals, I am sure this is where they get all their weekly ingredients and spices, well let me tell ya, I have never seen so many. This is the store if you are looking for those spices that I can't even spell, then go here. They even sell Olives in bulk. I also bought some flat bread, pretty cheap. The super huge size for only 1.99. The staff and owners were very nice. read more

This place is the Mid-East equivalent to the Italian Market. Part grocer, part pret-a-manger - it's an excellent source of all things middle east. Food to go: So I work right around the corner from this spot, so I frequent it often. My recos: ANY of their fatayers - best in the city (they come from the Golden Bakery in Bedford). If you like beef, the mufarakah (sp?!?) is excellent (spicy with nutmeg and cinnamon - great in a pita). Their falafel and pita wraps are great, cheap lunch options as well. Lastly, the owners are lovely people, who always have a smile on their faces. Oh, and you can buy a hookah here. Just an FYI ;) read more

My experiences with the Mid East Food Centre are somewhat limited because I have yet to actually dine there, but trust me when I say it's high on my list of things to try. I live in the North End and walk by the MEFC on a regular basis and I've been known to pop in for a snack or a recipe requirement in the grocery section and have yet to be disappointed. There are beans and lentils and rice galore in the bulk section along with spices and a few things I haven't cooked with before. Feta, olives and pickles are available and lots of other treats that I suspect aren't easy to find outside of the Mid East. Despite lots of options, one of my absolute favorite things in the grocery is one of the simplest: pita chips! Sold in a bag for a dollar they are the best accompaniment to hummus or babaganoosh I could ask for. It's a treat I don't drop by for regularly, but I do love it when I do. Last week I had some with some babganoosh from Local Source Market across the street and it was a special kind of heaven. The service at Mid East Food Centre in my experience has been especially polite. I remember having a great chat with one of the employees about his ESL class presentation coming up and how he was presenting on changing the oil in his car. He told me he loved talking with the customers to practice his English, and I told him his skills were coming along nicely. Gotta love some friendly conversation at the cash register. My findings appear to fit right along with the majority, the Mid East Food Centre is one of the stars of our North End community. read more

Mid East is an eclectic family run business, which first opened shop in the early 70s. From dips like babaganouge to hummus, and delicacies galore, like my favorite, the cheesy and rich fatayer bi kheshk, this shop has so many offerings when it comes to spicing up your diet. Stuffed grape leaves and garlic sauce are a must, not to mention any of their tasty, flaky pastries! Their grocery section is fantastic, with great ingredients like olive oils, pastas and a dozen varieties of olives. You can eat in or take your goodies to go. This is a great spot to stop for lunch, or alternatively pick up the stuff needed to make an inspired and fresh meal at home. read more

I usually don't find what I'm looking for in this place but I end up buying a lot of cool stuff anyway! I think it is the best place to buy feta cheese if your consumption is high because it is very cheap, fresh and quite delicious. Their olive and pickles collections aren't too bad either. You can even buy a hookah there! Just to go there and watch the stuff is kinda cool! It sucks that they close too early, though. They don't take credit cards, either! read more

"Freshest Pita in Town!" Mid-East should hang a sign in the window. With the Fancy Lebanese pita bread factory next door, the pita bread is so soft you almost want to curl up with it. Of course, they also sell tasty homemade hummus and labaneh to eat with it. If you like to cook, you'll find all the supplies you need in what could be the best selection of Middle Eastern ingredients in town. Six varieties of basmati rice, four varieties of feta cheese, many canned goods and an extensive bulk collection of spices are just some of the many options to browse. Sometimes specialty stores will mark up prices, but here the prices are very reasonable if not lower than local chains. And if you're not into cooking, grab something from their food counter. Choices range from appetizers such as fatayers, kibbe, and dolmades to mains like shawarma and falafels and a few wild cards such as chicken biriyani. Enjoy your meal in the pleasant, casual eat-in area or get it to go. On a side note, if you're a vegetarian, you'll be happy to know that Mid-East is recommended by the Halifax Association of Vegetarians. Like many international groceries the shop is unfocused and has a little bit of everything. The staff is really friend and I'm sure would answer your questions. I got one of each of the filled cookies; pistachio and walnut were the best. Got the fresh dates too, only $4 a box. read more

This is a great place to buy large containers of olive oil, olives, bags of rice and other mid-eastern food. The small restaurant attached to it is well worth the effort to get to at lunch. You get large plates of food for under $10, and on Wednesday they have a two-for-one falafel day. read more

The people at Mid East Food Centre blew me away. They are some of the nicest restaurant staff I have met in a very long time. I shared an Iraqi Kabob dish with my GF and we enjoyed every bit. I really enjoyed our stop in here while biking the switch event in Halifax with my wife. I tried the pastrys (not sure of the name) but it was the only pastry they had so hard to miss. They were short bread cookies stuffed with different fillings like dates etc... Really good. I also got a jar of pickled eggplant interesting not sure what to do with it? Might go well on a veggie hotdog or somthing. Other then that we looked around and saw lots of cool stuff. Even saw these sword like skewers very interesting. Lots of spices and even a frozen lamb or sheep head sitting in the freezer. I have no idea what one would do with the head? Make a soup perhaps? read more

We live really close by and often shop here. There's a vast selection of Mid-eastern products, as you might guess -- I always picture a new Canadian from Syria coming across his favourite brand and thinking, "How about that, you can get _____ here!" Great fresh olive selection, also feta cheese. Our kids subsist on their fresh dates, too: get the $5 kind from Iran, they're the softest. Also the chickpeas in the glass jar rather than the can. They have frequent specials. But the thing I prize it for the most is the spice section, which simply has everything. They carry the excellent pita bread from the bakery next door; and the pita chips are indeed fantastic. Did I mention the management and staff? I absolutely love the Mid East Food Centre! As a longtime vegetarian, I have sampled many a falafel in this fine city and I have found the falafel at Mid East to be by far the best in town. They are wonderfully crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. Mid East has also completely perfected their hummus recipe and it is simply delicious. I am more of a fan of the restaurant portion of Mid East, but the grocery section is great as well, especially for those hard to find items like pickled turnips and zataar spices. The pitas are baked next store and are awesome, and I tend to pick up a bag of their delicious homemade pita chips every time I stop by. This is an amazing resource if you like to cook, or eat for that matter - many things here that I haven't been able to find in other spots. It's the sort of place that, although small, I can (and did) spend 20 minutes exploring after wandering in off the street out of curiosity. Big props for the bulk spice section, buckets 'o' self-serve olives, giant canisters of cooking oils and excellent variety of obscure middle eastern ingredients such as Za'tar and pomegranate molasses. I don't eat much meat but it's also great to see that they stock local, free range birds here for a very reasonable price. read more
