Located on Dresden, Mashawee is one of several places in that area focused on the downtown lunch crowd. However, given where I work and live, I'm not often in the area at that time of day. This day, however, I was off and running some errands downtown so I thought I'd tick Mashawee of my list of places to try out. It's a small location, with seating for just over 20 inside, with a few more tables out on the patio. It's pretty bare bones inside, which is understandable as they're there to crank out lunches for office workers, not provide a fancy sit down dinner. It's basically a diner/cafeteria design, with an open kitchen and display case that run the length of the restaurant. The menu board had some interesting Middle Eastern options beyond the typical Lebanese fare that we're used to in here Halifax. This included mansaf - lentils cooked in a sauce of fermented dried yogurt, bamya - an okra dish, and kebsa - a meat and rice dish. I wanted to try a couple types of meat so I went with their mixed kebab plate, choosing chicken and lamb. I sat down while they cooked the meat, having my run of the place as it was empty in the post lunch-lull. Once the kebabs were ready, I went up to the counter and they asked what type of rice I wanted, I went with their self-described yellow rice. The salad looked just like coleslaw, and it came with a big dollop of hummus as well. The rice was a vivid yellow, although it didn't taste particularly saffron-y, if that's what it was coloured and flavoured with. Nonetheless, it was cooked nicely and was very plentiful, so being the lover of rice that I am, it was a-ok in my book. Each skewer of meat had four decent-sized hunks on it and were nicely browned and moist. Even the lamb was tender, although I wished it would have had more of a Mediterranean/Middle Eastern seasoning. The salad/coleslaw was shredded cabbage and carrot; it was crunchy but nothing special. I paid at the counter when I was done, and it was $15 for my plate and water, pretty reasonable for the size of what I got. I don't know if I would make Mashawee a destination lunch again, but it's good to know that it's there as an option for a quick lunch and a pile o' rice. read more

Another great find- awesome food, cheap price. I've had a lot of shawarmas over the years- YHZ, YUL, YOW, YYZ, YYC, YVR, even in NewYork, Los Angeles and Barbados. The quality here is second only to Kababji in Dartmouth, but this is a take-out restaurant vs. a dining venue. That's about it, really- surroundings are a bit shabby, but if you're looking for a high quality/price ratio- you won't beat this family-run place. Very nice family, I might add. read more

Large portion of chicken meat, juicy and tender with lots of salad, humus and lovely garlic mayo. The rice was tasty as well. Been there again, never disappointed. Happy to take family and friends who are visiting. Would recommend to anyone. what i like about this place, it only makes halal food. Its all home cooking as if my mam was is making it . Also its very clean, where everything is cooked in front of you . Very healthy food, with no fat or preservative natural spices. And if you have been in Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, or Egypt, they have the most famous and traditional dishes for these countries such Jordanian mansaf, Saudi Arabia's kabsa, and a lot more. This is my favorite shawarma place. The service is super friendly and quick as well. I've only ever had their shawarmas (the chicken is my favorite) but I'm sure eventually I'll try their other Mediterranean dishes as well. The chicken shawarma is filled with lots of chicken, crunchy and tangy pickled turnips, and other fix-ins that blend so deliciously together. Also, this is the cheapest place to get a chicken shawarma that I've found, so you can hardly go wrong with that. If you've never been to this place, I definitely recommend it! Great portion for your price! I paid 5$ for a huge chicken shawarma wrap with all the fixings. The pita is so thin and it makes it so easy to eat - while somehow not breaking. The shawarma itself was alright - nothing spectacular. The shawarma was a little fatty and the sauce kind of tasted like chicken stock. There were a ton a flavours but in my opinion that many flavours aren't needed. The pita was a little stained - from what I'm assuming was in part due to the chicken stock so a bright yellow stain was present. It wasn't terrible but definitely wouldn't go out of my way to find parking and go here when there is so many more competitive shawarma places in Halifax. The reason I gave so many stars is that the atmosphere was a great family-oriented feel. They were so kind and welcoming and welcomed you when you came in and thanked you bunches when you left. Their chicken shawarmas are delicious and cheap, but I saw some very disturbing food handling practices and will not be back.

I popped in here looking for the last business to occupy the space and stayed to test out the newcomer. It's a nice piece of middle Eastern culture just off of the busy commercial area of Spring Garden Road. The TV was playing a soccer game with commentators speaking Arabic and wearing traditional head coverings. The food is typical for Mediterranean or Lebanese casual dining around these parts, with a falafel wrap running $5.50 and a chicken shawarma wrap for $6.50. You can get special plates with the same type of pita wraps or meat skewers along with rice, potatoes, and salad and the like if you're running on fumes and need to really refuel. I tried the falafel wrap on its own, and was asked if I'd like everything on it. Wary of super spicy peppers or anything I asked about those, which do not come standard on it, and assured the waiter I'd like the hummus and all that. The wrap was adequate, a little on the dry side but I've had much drier. I'd ask for extra sauces/dips next time. Overall, a welcoming space in a central area with inexpensive Mediterranean style food. I wouldn't make plans to go out of my way to eat there but it certainly works in a pinch. read more

Finally checked out this place around lunch time. They have a really good deal on chicken/beef shawarma wraps right now. $4.95 each, which I imagine is the cheapest shawarma wrap you can get in the city right now. They're a decent size too. I got everything on it which included hummus and garlic sauce, but I wish they had hot peppers available. The meat itself tasted very unique - quite different from other shawarmas in Halifax, but in a good way. Lots of spices and flavour. There was an older woman working by herself at the time and she seemed friendly and works hard. A lot of this food seems authentic and the prices are good. "WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER" I ordered take away for one item and got something else. When I called in the shop to change it, I have been told that it could be changed. So I again came back to the shop to change the item and then the person who took my order rudely continuously telling me I made the mistake and he was right. Since English isn't first language for neither of us I told him that may be he understood me wrong and I totally understood that. But he misbehaved with me continuously and at one point told me liar. I am a customer and I tried to admit that we understood each other wrongly. But no change in his behavior. I was so furious at that point and took the order without changing and came back home. May be it doesn't matter if this shop lose one or two customers in the short run. However in the long run it would matter, since I started recently coming to the shop more frequently due to the coronavirus situation. Now me and my family wouldn't come due to this. Appreciate if they enhance their customer service the same way they are preparing food. And I can vouch food so far is one of the finest for me and my family. read more

I will tell you that food at Mashawee is AMAZING. I get the lamb Tikka, and the meat is amazing, the portions are large, the place is clean. HOWEVER, the reason for the two stars is the people working there. If you know Arabic then you know that the people there during the daytime are constantly complaining about the customers in Arabic. I was just in this morning, the three Arab employees working there were gossiping and talking behind the white lady working there. Loudly. Anyone that knew Arabic could understand, except for the poor co-worker. The service definitely seems friendly if you don't know the language. Unique style as you don't wait long for your food because it is cooked and placed in metal compartments to stay nice and hot. I love lamb and have tried it in many greek and middle eastern restaurants but have never ever tasted an impeccable leg of lamb that melts in my mouth from tenderness while providing a mouth watering experience from the perfect blend of spices. Their prices for combos are competitive and are cheaper than most restaurants. They have great lunch specials sometimes (chicken, salad, and rice.. etc.) If you want the best choose the best! I liked this place. I lived in Ottawa for long enough to recognize quality Lebanese fast food and this is it. I had the falafel sandwich and some honey-sweetened cakes they had cooling on the counter. They were both pretty good. Overall the place seems like a small family-run place. Next time I'm in Halifax I'll try to go back, it's certainly better than any Shawarma place we have in Vancouver. read more

Went in for the $5.95 garlic roasted chicken,rice,roasted potato hummus & salad. I also got a pop. My total came to over 17dollars. So I get back to work and it had two small pieces of chicken that were mostly bone two small slices of potatoes and the salad was coleslaw, they did give me enough bland rice to feed a family of five.The fact that I spent that much for premade food that said it was suppose to 5.95 I will never recommend it or ever go back. read more

My boyfriend and I used to go to Turkish Delight for our mediterranean fix, but now we have a new favorite spot with super nice service! Visiting Halifax from New York and went out looking for shawarma when we stumbled upon Mashawee. It looked quite busy, especially for 9pm on a Monday, and that drew us in. Everything looked and smelled delicious. We ordered two chicken shawarma's to go, prepared just as we liked and grilled perfectly.
