Unfortunately, the restaurant did not have working air conditioning, which made the dining experience extremely uncomfortable. The food and service were excellent and the staff did a great job despite the circumstances. What was especially frustrating was that the restaurant already knew there was an issue with the air conditioning but did not make that clear to us beforehand. On a hot day, this significantly affected our experience... and is totally wrong to subject your staff to those working conditions! My wife and I arrived at Blue Ocean tonight at 5:45. The restaurant was already crowded but we did not have any wait to be seated. Restaurant was uncomfortably warm. We waited over 40 minutes for our entrees and a storm knocked the power out before we received the bill. The waitress told us the restaurant was hot because the management turns off the AC every night! No wonder it was too hot! Obviously they have some issues to address! Fried and broiled are most of the seafood choices. The walls are painted with scenes of seashore villages. Our waitress was very polite and quite attentive. One of the kids did not like what was ordered, and they had no problem replacing it for them. This is one of my wife's favorite places to stop at if we are in the area. Checks were also mostly inaccurate. I left the table to pay in a confusion. --Food was great and the staff was nice. Our family members love Blue Ocean. Everytime they are in town, we always eat there. Everytime we have about the same experience, and leave feeling like we wasted a meal and feeling bloated, however, we can still ingest the food, so that is a positive. On average, we would give Blue Ocean a 3/5 stars. Lashan was the bright spot of our trip. Her positive attitude and her check ins were great! Number one waiter. We definitely felt like her "friends". 10/10 The bloomin onion was good, but how do you mess up a bloomin union? 8/10 The salad was a disappointment. Just lettuce with a few sad onions and shredded carrots and two cherry tomatoes to adorn the green depression that awaited me. I used oil and vinegar as my dressing, but discovered that there was already a dressing on my salad - water. It was the wettest salad I've had in a while. 3/10 Speaking of water, the ice water given to us tasted almost salty and dirty. I know this a seafood restaurant, but I'm not a fish. 5/10 As always, Blue Ocean gives a very 80s atmosphere. It is loud and crowded, but it has never pretended to be anything else. 4/10 The hush puppies are always a highlight of visits to Blue Ocean, but not much else. 9/10 The calabash chicken was solid, as usual, however, as it got cold the chicken became more and more unappealing. 7/10 The Fettucini Alfedro was at first warm and frothy, but soon lost it's appeal as it became congealed. A friend and I went to have dinner around 7:30 yesterday evening. The section we were seated in the waiter only had two tables. I never had a bad experience until yesterday. We sat there for 10mins when I tell you (Ryan) the waiter total ignored us like we weren't even sitting behind the table he were serving. So, I asked for the manager she came to the table, and I explained to her what was going on and she said I will take care of y'all not one time did I see her pull him to the side or anything. That was poor customer service. So, she said she will make things right by giving us 30% off our bill which was only .99 cents. She tried but I feel that was poor business but I will never want him again as my server. read more

While attending a conference at nearby Presbyterian College, I met a friend here for dinner. I had heard about it from a long ago article in the local Charleston newspaper suggesting best restaurants to stop along I 26 in South Carolina (by Hannah Raskin). My friend and I really enjoyed our meal. The dining room is large and we were there relatively late in the their dinner service and we were one of few customers. The staff were super friendly. The menu is large. I had shrimp on rice that was very good. My friend had a seafood sampler that she enjoyed. They also serve house wine. Very big, clean room. Originally seated at a booth (#22 I think) that had NO room between the table and seats. Asked to be moved to a table. Service was average with a couple of hiccups. Asked waitress if they served cocktails or beer and she said no. Later saw it on the menu that they do have beer and wine. Ordered an appetizer that didn't show up...and we weren't charged either. Had to ask for butter for the crab clusters, which were a bit dry/overcooked. The hush puppies were the best we've ever had. The flounder was also a bit overcooked. The baked potato was fluffy and soft.....great. Fish sandwich was large and done well, as was the shrimp Alfredo. They were out of the German chocolate cake. Some hits and some misses. Is it worth the hype or traveling just to eat there? No. But it is a good spot to get seafood when you don't want to go to the coast. We have been many times over the past few years since moving here and I have found that you just need to try several things to see what they do well. I have found some dishes are cheaply made(Alfredo-nasty) and not worth it but others are done well and certainly let you get that seafood fix. The hush puppies are great. The salads are fresh. Their seafood is fresh and never overcooked when we order anything broiled. Fried is good-has a little more batter than I prefer but that is a personal taste. Amazingly the grilled marinated chicken is delicious(yes I know it's not seafood) and the skewered shrimp are always flavorful. The platter with broiled fish, scallops and shrimp is one often offered. Could use a little more flavor but cooked perfectly. No chewy overcooked scallops. I will say-don't go to a seafood restaurant and expect them to be able to have a good steak. Don't waste your money on trying to order one. Overall a decent place to eat if you want something to satisfy your seafood craving but aren't expecting a high quality meal. read more

I've got family nearby, and was wrapping up a visit with them when we decided to have an early dinner as a group. My uncle suggested Blue Ocean, and seafood didn't sound like a bad idea, so off we went. The restaurant's location next to I-26 makes it easy to find. The parking spots are a bit tight, but because we were going early there were spots open. We got a table quickly and were well attended by the waitstaff throughout our visit. Our waitress was especially welcoming and frequently checked on us. As for the food, the five of us were all pleased with both the quality and quantity of food we received. I ordered a broiled platter accompanied by a large side salad. The salad was simple but fresh. My seafood was cooked to perfection, including the best broiled perch I've ever had and an especially delicious stuffed clam. The shrimp and oysters were also spot-on. The only disappointment I experienced was the deviled crab, which was still good but not quite up to par with everything else I had. We all certainly got our fill of food (including the hush puppies; I think we went through four bowls!), and many of our group boxed up enough leftovers to make a second meal. Going early was smart, by the way, because the eatery was packed by the time we got our entrees, and there were a load of patrons waiting for tables as we departed. We have eaten at Blue twice in the last month. The first time was when I was craving lobster. My husband took me here with recommendation of my friend in Lauren's where I just moved to 2years ago. We moved from a big city so it's hard to find good places when you don't want to drive to Greenville or Columbia. We loved it! The lobster was chilled just right. We were looking for a light lunch since it was later in the day, but didn't want fast food. We read the reviews quickly and decided to try a quick stop to get some small seafood plates. Boy were we pleasantly surprised this food was really outstanding! We are big fans of Calabash style friend shrimp, and these shrimp were jumbo, hot and perfectly lightly breaded. We shared a small shrimp platter, and my wife tried the clam chowder which was pretty good, but not the best she's had. We went here because it was recommended to us. We soon learned that the person who recommended it has no idea what good food is. I ordered broiled filet of flounder. It came out with the skin on it which automatically made me lose my appetite but additionally it was not filleted properly and was full of bones and slimy. I told the waitress I was not eating it and her response was ok. No apology, no offer to get me something else. But by the time we flagged her down, it was too late to get something else anyway. The waitress was terrible. The service was slow and the order was wrong. We had to ask several times for things that were missing. We had ordered a half dozen shrimp and she brought us and charged us for a dozen, even though that wasn't what we ordered. When the bill came, it was almost $100 for three people. You've got to be kidding me. When we went up to pay, they asked us how it was and I told them it was terrible and I didn't eat. But I'm not really sure why they asked because they didn't care.
