Oh my.... This place makes a mean sandwich. Quality and fresh ingredients from start to finish. Everything from the fresh bread to the sliced meats is perfection. Even the chips it comes with is delicious! Try their fries too. So good. I took a bite of everyones sandwich and loved it all. The Meatloaf Sandwich had so much flavor. The meatloaf was juicy and seasoned perfectly. The BLT sounds simple enough but it is far from simple in flavor. So much deliciousness with each bite. They have a bar in here. The ambiance is laid back and employees are very cool and friendly. Restrooms are near the bar area. This place is popular and gets packed, so don't be surprised if you have to wait for seating. Quite the spot for a bite and/or a drink. This place stays busy and I can see why. I had a chicken quesadilla which was excellent and the service was great. Kim was super at answering questions, keeping up with refills and some good conversation when she had a minute to spare. They have lots of beer on tap, but fewer IPAs wouldn't hurt my feelings any. We found this place on Yelp while staying near Harper's Ferry for a getaway. The place is cute and kitschy in a fun way (though the greenery outside could be tended to a bit). We had the Jacked mac + cheese appetizer, the gorgonzola and pear salad, and a philly shroom sandwich. The mac + cheese was OK but not quite as flavorful and cheesy as I was hoping. The pear salad was very good - highly recommend. My partner enjoyed his sandwich but wasn't raving. Overall, a good lunch stop. read more

We drive an hour to go to this restaurant, it has not disappointed. We go for lunch and have eaten outside several times which is so relaxing, I usually get a salad with chicken and avocado and it is always so tasty and fresh. Today it was colder out so we ate inside and I tried the quiche and salad. It was delicious and again the ingredients tasted so fresh. My husband always gets the Philly cheesesteak and he says it is the best. The staff is always attentive and friendly. I highly recommend. read more

Absolutely LOVED this place. Super cute patio in the back with lots of shade and we were cool even in the afternoon on an over-90 degree day. What happened. Was a great place. Closed for several days or a few weeks. Reopened and was not the same place. Different and more limited menu. Service went from 5 star to a 3- The food, a disaster. The fries were the same great, the only positive. The beef and blue - totally dried out, did not contain any sauce, and the plate was sloppy. The burger was cooked to a perfectly overcooked very well done. It was ordered rare. Hopefully they can recover. Only reason I'm writing this. read more

That French dip was perf! Tender and juicy, the baguette, just right, the horseradish mayo, awesome, the aue jue sauce, oh yea! That was just my order. Ate here recently for 5 weekends in a row. In each meal the food was excellent: buffalo chicken salad, broccoli chedder cheese quiche, sweet potato fries, etc. Yesterday's hamburger with melted gorgonzola blue cheese was literally the best hamburger I've had in a restaurant in years !!! (including those in NYC, Chicago, Kansas City, etc.) Service is always great, the prices very reasonable. The ambiance, whether near the babbling creek or inside, makes this one of my favorite oasis in the country. read more

We made reservations for a Sunday afternoon not too long ago. The table was ready on time and we were seated promptly. It took more than 15 minutes for our server to greet us and our server's personal hygiene was substandard for interacting with the public in a food establishment. Their clothing was dirty, wrinkled and unkempt and their service apron was also soiled and in need of laundering. Our beverage order was taken and then disappear while it took another 15 minutes to get a draft beer, iced tea and water. I finished my beer before our lunch order was taken. The place was not overly full nor too busy to warrant such poor service and we didn't witness our server helping other servers or other customers. The crab and cheese brioche appetizer was terrible, no crab morsels could be found, it was tasteless, and we rejected the plate after one bite and sent it back. My sandwich had a meager portion of beef and it tasted old and dry. Although the French fries were adequate, they were the best thing served at this meal. My lunch companions were also unsatisfied with their individual experiences, food and service. Save your money and patience and opt for a better experience elsewhere. read more

We have stopped by Blue Moon quite a few times over the past few years while visiting Shepherdstown. They do have a nice outdoor atmosphere and the service is good, but slow. We have been disappointed the past few times we've made the choice to eat there as everyone in our party has noticed that the quality of the food has declined greatly. Everything portioned out, with step by step instructions. You can't make up a place this awesome! Some of the local "cool guys that lurk around on German St" told me to go to the Blue Moon when I asked them about a place to go and eat. I walkeddown the street in search for the place and when I found it, I went outside to the rear patio to discover the most interesting outdoor garden like seating area. The creek runs through it! There's a bridge over it, and an upper and lower brick seating area with iron tables. Wow! I ordered the steak and brie sandwich and it even comes with a small cup of jus. What a sandwich! read more

A lovely location, it's worth going just to sit out back no matter what you order. Make a reservation because there aren't a lot of tables (we got lucky). The daily specials all sounded great but there's a large menu. We ordered from the specials list and had the peanut butter pie dessert. This place was a great experience all around, from the friendly staff, to the ambiance, to the food itself. I think the thing that stands out to me the most was the serenity of the outdoor seating area. The next most prominent memory was the friendliness and energy of our server. The food was definitely worth remembering, as well, but not nearly as emphatic as the other variables. Blue Moon was recommended to me by a friend who lives in the area (going to Shepherd currently). It helped that was a wonderful evening outside weather-wise, which definitely called for a meal out on the patio. The outdoor seating was rather extensive, but not crowded together, which would have been an easy accomplishment that they chose to avoid. The 'garden area' for lack of a better term was soothing and relaxing, especially with the nice selection of beers they had available. The food was good, though in all honesty, not earth-shattering. The crab puffs were great, but were little more than an English muffin split, covered in a cheesy crab dip, and toasted. Don't get me wrong, it tasted great, and the accompanying (canned) mandarin slices were a nice touch, but it wasn't mind-blowing, per se. My sandwich, on the other hand, was fantastic! I had the special, which was a southwest melt. It was grilled chicken (quite moist and well-seasoned), locally sourced bacon (sweet, salty, and smoky), avocado, jack cheese, and a southwest sauce, which was a chipotle aioli, I believe. It was wonderfully toasted, and extremely flavorful, served with a side of green grapes. My friend had the chicken and reds salad, which was equally impressive. They have a very extensive list of vegetarian and vegan (I believe) offerings, as well. Not exactly my genre, but worth checking out for sure. I definitely recommend this place for a wonderful meal in Shepherdstown, especially for the scene and atmosphere. As night fell, the outdoor setting only grew more and more memorable. I love this place! I came here years ago when I visited Shepherdstown and loved the outdoor cafe area. This was the one place I definitely wanted to go to while on a brief mid-week trip back. The French Dip was scrumptious and the lava cake was also yummy! My server was a delightful young woman, and I tipped even though they pay their employees "a living wage." Had not been in since the staff and management meltdown. Thought I would give them time to adjust. I ordered a beloved rueben to go, order was ready on time, they were very friendly. Problem is what I got was a thin gristle sandwich, just almost all chunks of shaved gristle, not much of it, and it was served on what appeared to be whole wheat bread. I have had the rueben's here for as long as they have been open, countless sandwiches, always thick juicy wonderful examples of what this sandwich was supposed to be. This one went in the trash after trying to eat it several times, I was hungry! But by the time I got it home they had closed so no taking it back. Not going back for another one of these again. I dont know why i have never reviewed The Blue Moon, as i went to school in Shepherdstown and still make a trip out there when ever i can to get a sandwich. Nothing Beats it, and it just keeps getting better and better. Nothing beats the decor, warm wood insides, with local art (always supports local artists), little nick nack decorations, a sweet little wood bar, lots of windows to shed the warmth of the sun inside and a beyond fantastic outdoor patio with lots of seating and the town creek running right through it. It is, if i dont say so myself, the best little Cafe on the east coast, with a staff i feel like I've grown up with, and plenty of good service and smiles all around. The food is hands down the most fresh and tasty for states around and their seasoned fries are single best french fry you could have. Their sandwiches are the best part, but they have plenty of fresh daily made soups, salads (greek is wonderful), appetizers, and specials. I have been to NY, SF California, and around the country and the Blue Moon makes the best Rueben in the country. There, i said it, sorry Katz Deli. So, grab a frosty local pint of beer, a warm meal (The Rueben), and stay for the atmosphere. You know ill be back Blue Moon staff! read more

We've been coming to Blue Moon for years and years. Their food is consistently super YUM!! Honestly, we've never ordered anything from here that we didn't love. Blue Moon is a great spot to have dinner or lunch with the girls. We love the Veggie Smack, Curt's Quesadilla, the Veggie Wrap, the Black Bean Burger and the Southwest Wrap. All are oh so wonderful!! And definitely add the corn salsa to everything you order!! The ambiance is laid back and relaxing. The wait staff is friendly and fun. The Blue Moon Café is a cute place right next to the campus of Shepherds University with a beautiful outdoor seating area and a pleasant hippie/cool/laidback vibe inside. The noise level is a little high but not unpleasant and the service is friendly and polite and prompt enough. I ate inside as rain was threatening and it was a touch chilly. I had the Humus plate as an appetizer. Excellent. Freshly made in-house, it had the texture of homemade and a nice garlic bite to it. Served with cucumber slices, nacho chips and triangles of pita, it was perhaps the best humus I have ever had. My main dish was the black bean burger served on a nice whole wheat Kaiser roll with potato chips and a pickle spear. The roll was fresh and tasty, the lettuce on the burger was crisp and fresh, and the "Tex-Mex" sauce was tasty but there could have been more. Disappointing was the black bean burger itself. It was nothing more than a Morningstar burger. This was confirmed by the waitress. Frankly, if I wanted a Morningstar veggie burger, I can get them for $4 a package at the local market. I expected more, much more, especially after enjoying the humus. My suggestion to the owner of the Blue Moon Café is to develop a black bean burger in house and take it all to another level. I will certainly go there again and I am looking forward to trying some of their other vegetarian options but I suggest you steer clear of the black bean burger. You can buy Morningstar at any supermarket. read more
