I hate giving bakeries bad reviews. It is with this in mind that I say: the Blue Heron's pastries and hot cocoa were the worst I've ever tasted. Flavorless seemed to be the theme of the day. The establishment atmosphere definitely had the typical PNW earthy vibe. It seemed clean, with a bit of PNW grungy earthiness. Not bad, just PNW. The counter staff were friendly and nice. I have no complaint on the service or atmosphere. My criticism is, unfortunately, about their product itself. I decided on a blackberry scone, chocolate croissant and a hot cocoa. Flavorless #1. The scone: When I order fruit scones it is with the expectation that there actually be some fruit present in the chosen item. There were approximately 2 "things" that were being passed off as blackberries. They were crispy and dry. The scone itself was also dry, flavorless and downright awful. Terrible crumb texture, no flavor at all and no fruit to be found. Flavorless #2. The chocolate croissant: What can I say? Greasy, dense, hard and flavorless. How does one make a chocolate croissant with no flavor?? I ate a few bites and saved the rest for my husband. He looked at me after a bite of the croissant and said, "what is this?!" Flavorless #3. The hot cocoa: the final disappointment. There was nothing hot about this bland beverage. Luke warm, and absolutely no cocoa hints at all. Again, how does one make a flavorless hot chocolate? Needless to say, everything ended up in the garbage. Maybe the other menu items are better and I just ordered the wrong ones, but I won't be wasting my money again to find out. I stopped by for breakfast and for $13 the Mediterranean scramble was delicious - chock full of vegetables and covered with feta. I had a gf muffin that was mediocre (understanding gf is not their specialty was just happy to have a sweet side). The place is hopping and the staff very friendly; great neighborhood vibe. I'm really disappointed. I was at the Farmers Market and bought a scone with currants and raspberries. It was really brown but I thought maybe it was made with some sort of healthy wheat or something. I bit into it and realized it was over baked. Like way over baked. Dried out over baked. Gluten-free options!! Delicious gluten free options. I got the breakfast sandwich with GF bread and it was great! They also have lots of gf pastries. I come here OFTEN and drive 35min to do so! I get the walnut, apricot, and date sourdough boule every time I go, its so good as avocado toast or with a fried egg on top or as a cucumber sandwich, their giant super soft loaf of white bread is equally good. Many of their from scratch deli salads are good as well, as is their special tea or coffee of the day, slice of pizza (GF), veggie or with meat. The prices are very fair for the excellent baked products. You should stop in for lunch or breakfast they will make it to order or you can grab an already made delicious meat or other salad sandwich or salad from the cooler, don't forget your potato salad or side of pickled beets and a brownie or seasonal fruit frilled piece of goodness or specialty cookie!! We've been frequenting this adorable little bakery for the past couple years and have yet to be disappointed. Coffee is usually on point and they get to know the locals and their coffee order. When my sister moved to Oly, she followed the older sister's lead and took up a local haunt at this place. I popped in on her birthday to surprise her with a coffee and the brewista knew who she was and what her poison was-oh yaaahh- made me look like the most observant and thoughtful sister ever, thanks for looking out guys. I also love that they don't hate on those of us in the glutenisgross club, in fact, they are all about enabling us with their gf pizza crusts, celiac safe lunch nomming options, as well as the gf muffs I've come to depend on. There's nothing better for a person with celiac then sitting and drooling over a plate of muffins and then the cashier telling you that's todays gf specialty. We stopped by this cute little shop on the way up to the Olympic Peninsula. We were running late and would not make it before closing, so I called ahead, and a very friendly staff said they would open up for us, since we were just a bit past closing time. The service was not the only good thing about this place. We thoroughly enjoyed the sourdough rye loaf, almond spice biscotti, and pumpkin bread with chocolate chips. The soul cookie was not a favorite. On the way back through, we just had to stop in again and this time we picked up the honey wheat loaf, whole wheat loaf, cinnamon roll, turbo cookie, and a bag of the most wonderfully delicious cranberry lemon pistachio biscotti. OMG, we thought the almond spice biscotti were good. Well, the cranberry lemon ones just wowed. We enjoyed everything ordered, and this bakery is a definite to repeat whenever in the area again. read more

Overall don't think I'll be back for lunch. May give another go for breakfast items / coffee as the bread does seem of really good quality. Was really excited to visit this place. Was easy to find and we started with some coffee. They didn't have the chai I enjoy so I opted for a mocha with almond milk instead. The man at the register was kind and patient with a little wit as I tried to figure my order. The drink was made to perfection and I was happy to have caffeine in my system. My mother and two friends joined me and there wasn't enough seating to sit inside so we opted for the outside area which was cute and had a covered area. The experience was great up until we ordered food. My friends and I eat really closely to a gluten free vegan diet so we ordered three 'homefries with veggies' without eggs. My mother ordered toast with olive and walnut spread. When the homefries came out it was %85 potatoes that were slightly undercooked. My mothers toast was dry and the spread was sparse. I requested an extra plate of veggies for us and the cook behind the counter was obviously in a bad mood. The veggies came out after 15 min and it was more of a 3/4 plate of veggies. I asked for ketchup and the man put it in a bowl because they apparently only had one bottle. I came here with the hopes to have a gf vegan goodie which they told me over the phome they had. After the meal I discovered they only had one muffin available that was gf and vegan and unfortunately had cranberries in it(I'm allergic, mainly my fault for not inquiring) All and all I would only come back for coffee. read more

This is a nice little bakery with a small but tasty breakfast and lunch menu. It's close to home and they have coffee which draws me in. However, they are often understaffed and it can sometimes take a while to get your food. I came with a friend one time, and I got my food 15 minutes before my friend did. I was near done by the time he got his food so I either had to eat alone, or let my food get cold while I waited. My friend order the fried potatoes and veggies... it looked delicious but there were mushrooms in it, and the menu didn't mention mushrooms at all. Not a huge deal for him, but if someone were allergic to mushrooms, this could have been a devastating mistake. We told the staff about it, and they just apologized. They should definitely have ALL of their ingredients on the menu! If you order something, make sure you know what's in it! read more
