We visited Meximodo in Metuchen for a double date night with friends, and what an experience!…read more
From the moment you walk in, you're greeted with amazing energy. The front desk staff is welcoming, the atmosphere is vibrant, and the restaurant itself is stunning. We happened to visit while the Halloween decorations were up, and they worked perfectly with what I believe is the Sugar Skull centerpiece surrounding the bar. As soon as we walked in, we heard the staff singing birthday greetings, complete with indoor pyrotechnics! Talk about setting the tone for the evening.
We had actually considered heading to another bar after dinner, but quickly realized, why would we leave? THIS is the bar to be at! They have EVERYTHING!
For appetizers, we ordered the Mode-Glazed Pollo Bites, Citrus Shrimp Aguachile, Truffle Street Corn, and Crispy Yuca Fries. The pollo bites and shrimp aguachile weren't really my favorites, but the Truffle Street Corn was phenomenal! I genuinely could have eaten that for my entire meal.
As for dinner, everyone agreed their food was excellent. This is where my memory gets a little fuzzy... or perhaps I just didn't care what everyone else ordered! I do know that I had the Jalisco Birria Melt Tacos, and let's just say, by the time my wife thought to ask for a taste, they were already gone. Absolutely delicious!
Now, let's talk drinks, because Meximodo really shines here.
I started with the El Jefe, moved on to the Mi Amour, and my friend and I shared two tequila flights. I strongly recommend trying the flights, especially if you appreciate premium tequila. Think of it like wine tasting. You might not order a $600 bottle of Cabernet at a restaurant, but getting to sample a couple of ounces of something special makes the experience worthwhile.
Their cocktail menu is impressive, and with the selection behind that bar, I'm convinced they can make just about anything. I also loved the little chili pepper symbols indicating the spice levels of their margaritas. Our waiter, Raymond, had the perfect way of explaining it: "Can you eat a jalapeño? If so, you can handle the habanero margarita." Simple enough!
My wife also tried Sotol, a spirit I'd never even heard of before, and absolutely loved it. Another fun discovery!
Between the atmosphere, the food, the incredible bar selection, and the attentive service from Raymond, Meximodo delivered a fantastic night out. It's the kind of place where dinner can easily turn into an entire evening.
Five stars. We'll definitely be back!
