While they were out of many of them during our trip, we still thoroughly enjoyed the ones we had. The vegetarian haggis was surprisingly delicious. Having never tasted traditional haggis, this is not a comparison. We enjoyed the flavor and the consistency was a bit crumbly without being too mushy. The vegetarian pizza was solid, although a few too many vegetables included for my personal taste (I prefer pizza with two to three items). And the standard margherita pizza was a winner. The staff was friendly and the view from the deck was nice. If you're looking for a cute lunch stop tucked into the southern edge of the Highlands, Glencoe Cafe is a nice option as you travel through the rolling hills of Scotland.

Given its diminutive size, the cafe has a relatively long menu of panini and other sandwiches, soups, salads, and desserts, with a sharp focus on tea service. Went with a chicken tikka panini, little salad, and darjeeling. It made for a nice lunch stop. Friendly service, as was the case virtually without exception the whole time were in Scotland. In the Glencoe Cafe's mashed-together seating, we U.S. residents of Ohio ended up being surrounded by Michigan folks who were talking about Big 10 football, including a young couple who, as is apparently contractually or maybe even genetically required of almost all U.S. millennials, order all restaurant food by stating which items they want to "do." "Home sweet home," Jeebus. Finally, here's a piece of advice: If you're driving from Edinburgh to the Glen Coe area like we were, and you're thinking about stopping for lunch on the way, consider that once you pass Stirling and a couple of smaller towns just beyond there, dining options are few and far between in this magical area. Although already hungry, we passed up a couple of sketchy-looking (and thronged) tourist cafes on the A82 about an hour before we got to Glencoe, but were glad we did.

Ok - the important part -- the food! I started off with a delicious, light and very fresh crab salad, which was served with a lightly dressed microgreen salad -- absolutely delicious! I could have licked the plate. My husband had the Cullen Skink, and said it was one of the better bowls he had on our trip. We split the Cod for dinner, and it was heavenly - beautifully seared, which perfectly cooked vegetables; the cod melted in our mouths like butter. It's such a great atmosphere with a cozy area to eat in front of a wood-burning cast iron stove. It's a very pet friendly place as well. We saw a cute doggie enjoying the warmth inside the bar. We ordered the chicken casserole special. It was good despite the price being a little too high for what it was. I'd expect to have a puff pastry on top of it for that price. Although, it was very tasty even though the presentation was not all that great. It was served with mash potatoes instead of chips. It was good. They have a big variety of local taps. I went with the Jock Pumpkinhead Stout from Loch Lomond Brewery while my husband had the Man O'Hoy from Orkney Brewery. We were very happy with our local brew selections. It was a very nice atmosphere for lunch. If you're a Harry Potter fan, then you may want to take that hike from here to the filming location of Hagrid's Hut. The pathway up to the hut is just a short walk from the inn. The inn itself is kind of unique with the ice ax and ski décor. It reminded me a little of Ketchikan for some reason. Maybe it was the 5 Points of Contact photo that I saw by Peter Daynes. There's also a display of ice axes designed by Hamish MacInnes. Our tour guide in Ketchikan was coincidentally named Hamish. Wow, everything does come around full circle. It all turned out to be a nice lunch experience in the Highlands.

Overall though this is a great cafe and I like the layout. The service was very friendly. They were setting up a bunch of reserved tables for what looked like a fancy lunch. I was surprised at the worldliness of the Salt and Pepper Asian-style fries on the Daily Specials board. They were amazing as was my "Hybrid Toastie" - essentially a Scottish patty melt. Not that it was mundane in any sense. It was delicious! I washed these down with a Diet Irn Bru - the guilt-free version of Scotland's most popular soda. Once again - another great meal with friendly service. Nowhere close to Edinburgh, yet still with that flair of sophistication mixed with small-town civility.

Food: I ordered their haloumi fries two days in a row! There were so so good! They come with a sweet chili sauce. Not many gluten-free options. I did have the quinoa salad and it did not disappoint! The piratish/sea decor might lead you to think there is lots of seafood- but not so many options. For seafood go right outside to the shack- affordable platters and mussels galore. This restaurant is more of a pub with Scottish/english options. They even have curry.
