I'm not one to re-read my old reviews, but in looking to write an "update" for Blarney Station, I take note that my initial review of it...which is several years old now...was my 3rd Yelp review and, as is common with my early Yelp reviews...exceedingly brief (as opposed to my recent reviews, in which...some might say...I babble on ad nauseum about almost everything except the restaurant/store/landmark/bookstore/etc. ostensibly being reviewed). Fair enough. But in the past year, I've returned to the Blarney Station at least twice after not having dined there for several years, and an update is in order. Let me say that the long dry spell was not because of any problems I had with the restaurant or the service. To explain that, a bit of preliminary babbling is in order... Before my reunion with my birth family, Rutherford was not a city I was familiar with. Growing up, I had passed the exit for it on Rt. 3 countless times on my way to NYC and back, with family as a kid and with friends as an adult, without really noticing. I was well into my adulthood when my birth mother was able to locate me and reach out. I was responsive, and we bonded. Born and raised in Hoboken, she had moved with her family to Rutherford as a teen. My maternal grandmother still lived in Rutherford at the time, and I became a regular visitor to the city where...under different circumstances...I might have grown up. (My birth father, from nearby Lyndhurst, had unfortunately died before the re-union could take place; I was able to establish a relationship with his sister and some cousins). I saw where my birth mother had gone to high school. I attended the Catholic Church where my birth father had been an altar boy. My birth mother even pointed out the house where I had been conceived (which may have been TMI, even for me). We ate often at the Blarney Station, which my grandmother liked. Across the street from the Rutherford Train Station (which is where my panicking teenage birth mother had told my teenage birth father to meet her so she could inform him she was pregnant; his Irish-Catholic family was all for them getting married...my paternal grandfather supposedly said, "We'll just have to add a little more water to the soup"...but my maternal grandfather, a decent man from what I've been told but also a bit of a tyrant, finally put a definite kibosh on any marriage between the 2 teens, threatening to throw my birth mother and me out if she brought me home. Today, teens might have more options, but it was a different time back then...). But then my maternal grandmother sold the old family home, moved, and I dined here less and less with my birth mother-- again, not for any negative reason, but because...well, just because, I guess... A year ago, my maternal grandmother passed away in a distant state and my brother (technically, half-brother...we have the same mother but different fathers...but he's my brother, as far as I'm concerned, in every sense of that word) wanted to arrange a memorial gathering of family at the restaurant that she used to love (even though she didn't have a drop of Irish blood in her veins; she was of German descent) and it was a nice, bittersweet experience. I thought, "Why did I stop coming here? No reason at all..." I returned recently with my birth mother and ordered the Happy Irishman Breakfast. Two eggs (scrambled, in my case), toast, beans, black & white pudding (not my favorite thing, but if I'm going to cater to my long-neglected Irish heritage...I'm going to cater to it all the way!), sausage, bacon, and a grilled tomato. It tasted as great as I remembered it. The place has changed little with the passing years. The bar is crowded, and boisterous, but not unnerving or intimidating (I'm getting old; back in my drinking days, there was no such thing as an unnerving or intimidating bar). The dining area is compact but not uncomfortably so, and the service is friendly and efficient. Near our table, a group of lawyers was talking (it made me think poignantly of the birth father I only knew through photos and from what I was told about him; he had been a lawyer before cancer felled him) about Trump's legal difficulties. My birth mother, much more of a "social butterfly" than I am, ventured an anti-Trump sentiment to them, thinking they were sympatico. One of them said, "Before you go on, let me tell you that I'm a Trump fan. We're talking legalities, not politics." It could have been an ugly incident, but it wasn't. He was polite, civil. They returned to their discussion; we returned to our meals. I wasn't raised as someone of Irish descent (my adoptive parents were WASPs, and I didn't know I was Irish until I was in my 20s), but at the Blarney Station, I feel I'm returning to a familiar, comfortable environment. A belated return to my heritage. And even if you're not Irish, as my maternal grandmother wasn't, it's great Irish food. Parking is bad, but then it's Ruthford. read more

I would give this restaurant 3 1/2 stars but that's not an option. The bar area is very nice as well as the dining room. Nice outside area also. Service was great. Ordered the French onion soup which was pretty good. The potato skins were a bit dry, not hot and hard to cut. The overall flavor was ok. Mozzarella sticks were good also. The Shepherds pie was actually very good and had a nice flavorful hardy sauce. Nice size portion. The Ruben was also very good. Corn beef was very tender. Could use a tad bit more dressing to bolster the flavor but otherwise was delicious. Dirty martini was delicious!! read more

So I took my friend here tonight bc I remember 8 yrs ago that their fish tacos were soooo good. I call to make sure they were on the menu and it turns out that they were special. So I called and the server told me that she would ask the chef to put them on the menu. So the next day came and I walked over to the bar and spoke to the bartender, Paris who went into the kitchen to ask if he would put them on the menu that night. And she said that he would. So I brought my friend there and sure enough they were on the menu and they were as delicious as I remember them. There was live music that night and it was a good time all around. The staff here is very friendly. We went for outdoor dining & were seated immediately. I like the tables on the platform. It didn't take long to get the food, but took a while to get the check. The food wasn't as good. My pizza was very burned as can be seen in the photo. I didn't bother asking for another; my daughter still liked it & it was already late. Had the shepherds pie and the Gaelic chicken for mains and the Irish curry fried for appetizers and all of them were above average..... especially the shepherds pie which was fantastic. The service was polite and attentive....I had two servers refill a drink for me at the same time! The atmosphere was nice.....plenty of tv's with football on and the music wasn't too loud. Want to come back and try other items on the menu that looked good at other tables. A very nice Irish pub. Came here for St. Patrick's Day and had the nutty Irishman which was excellent. This place is as Irish as it gets! Went here during St. Patty's Weekend and got a Reuben sandwich, girlfriend got a cheesesteak. The Reuben is phenomenal, has a ton of cheese, ton of meat, bread is nice and toasted and the fries are perfectly crisp. The cheesesteak is also something to talk about, if you're craving a cheesesteak but don't want to drive out to Philly, this is as close as you'll get to a cheesesteak. Meat is tender, real cheese, and they add Maggi seasoning which in my opinion makes the sandwich better. Give this place a try, you will not regret it. read more

Great little spot decided come here to grab some food on holloween night cuz we were to lazy to cook dinner. Beer selection was nice my wife and I had the Octoberfest.we ended up eating the Thai chili wings personal pizza and the fish and chips everything was pretty good especially the fish and chips I would just go back just for that simply because it was delicious. Came here on a Friday night and had a wonderful experience. The place was really crowded, but we somehow managed to be seated right away. The waiter we had was very friendly and the food was delicious. They also had a good amount of beers on tap! My boyfriend and I had a difficult time deciding what to get (food wise) since everything in the menu sounded yummy, so we ended up splitting 3 appetizers (and had enough leftovers for a snack later). Sat outside on a warm Monday night with a small crowd and two servers. Small menu with a few specials. Menus and special sheet was not clean and should be wiped off. Whisky Sour on the small side but extra cherry given. Beer wasn't real cold. Ordered the Wasabi Calamari. Nice portion but way too dry. Finally got extra wasabi and buffalo sauce which greatly helped. The second Whisky Sour took 20 minutes. Dinner is now taking 45 minutes for basic stuff. This was a great find !! Outstanding service from the time we entered the restaurant. I enjoyed the chicken pot pie with chicken and mushrooms. This was a nice size portion and delicious. My husband ordered the western Quesadilla with Chicken. We were both pleased with the portion size and quality of the food. The beer was cold and they had a nice selection. To say I'm bummed would be an understatement. I've been coming to this place for years. I have often found their lunch specials appealing and have been overall happy with the food. But my old reliable standby, when none of the specials have caught my eye, has been their "Station Sandwich." It's basically a nice, fresh, warm corned beef served on your choice of bread/roll with fries, pickle and slaw. Over the years I have consumed at least a couple of hundred of these things so I pretty familiar with what I'm supposed to get. So earlier this week Jr. and I pop in for lunch. He orders the standard BBQ Chicken Sandwich and I the Station. Imagine my surprise when I am then presented with a sandwich of cold, thin sliced corned beef that seeming came from a supermarket deli case. BLAH!!! To compound matters, the waitress, stands there and lies to my face saying "that's the way it's supposed to be." OK, that might be a bit harsh as this was a waitress I'd never seen here before so maybe she is new and actually thought it was supposed to be that way. Bu then she tried sticking to her guns even after my explaining to her that I'd been ordering the same sandwich for years and it has never before been served cold. I'm not going to write the place off yet. I'll stop back in when the owner is around and ask him what's going on. Hopefully this was an aberration and not the new norm. read more

Great neighborhood bar. The food is good and really under rated. I like the Shepard's pie. They've also got pretty good bar food like mozzarella stick with a surprisingly tasty marinara compliment. We've got a friend who lives in the neighborhood so we usually walk there. Parking can be an issue. There are a few spaces on the street or around the corner. The place is conveniently located across from the Rutherford train station. If you sit at the bar it's the kind of place that you should expect to talk to your fellow patrons. There is always a lot of friendly banter and a good time. It attracts a mixed crowd of local. The drinks are basic but they have a nice selection of liquors. There's also a great patio section in front when the weather is good to enjoy local people watching. All and all Blarney scores high for food, drinks and service. This is the one place in Jersey where you feel like you just stepped into a bar in Belfast or Dublin. They have THE best "fry" That is Fish fry for those of you who are unaware of the Irish terminology. And the Guinness is as sweet as it gets. A squeaky clean place where you can relax unencumbered by annoying crowds or chanting soccer fans. OK well maybe sometimes. Staff are over the top friendly, as was the bartender. We stopped here and grabbed some dinner. For starters, we had the French Onion Soup served traditionally in a crock with a crouton and melted mozzarella cheese. The soup was a touch salty, but that's almost par for the course with this item, as it's hard to find one that's not salty. Mains featured the fish and chips, which was coated in a light batter and not overcooked...done perfectly. My only issue was that the batter had absorbed a bit of the oil from the obviously clean fryer (as the color of the fish was superb), and this probably happened because the fryer wasn't hot enough upon submerging the fish into it. So...needless to say, the batter acts like a sponge and doesn't crisp up fast enough to protect the item from becoming oil-logged. The fries were good, standard frozen fare served with a generic tartar sauce and some malt vinegar which should be exchanged for Heinz brand. It has a stronger flavor as this one was a bit weak. The servers were great and very friendly and the decor was very Irish Pub -like with plenty of dark wood all around the place. read more

Went for a traditional Irish breakfast on Saint Patrick's Day, which coincidentally was the same day as a 5k road race in town. Over two hours waiting for a table...but chalk that up to the day. Stopped in Friday night before St. Patrick's Day and was happy to find seats at a small high top near the bar. The service was GREAT! Very attentive servers, we never had to wait for anything and the place was very busy! I had onion soup (not salty at all, yay!) and a big salad. It was delish! I went for brunch yesterday and it exceeded expectations. I've been there so many times in the past b.k. (before kids) for dinner, nights of drinks, etc. It was always decent but whoever the new cook is now, the food was fantastic. Bloody mary's were very good, my friend said his irish breakfast was great, my short rib quesadilla with sunnyside eggs was bangin. They had a stage riser rig set up for extra tables on the sidewalk and they did their best to make it not feel like I was sitting on a curb next to Park Ave traffic: thick curtain for shade and some fans and it was very comfortable. Obviously I don't get out much these days but I'm already trying to make plans there again as a way to see some other friends and also try out some other things I saw on the menu.
