I came in to have them look at why our AC was blowing warm. I was told the AC compressor clutch had gone bad but the compressor was not locked up. Given 2 options. Rebuild the clutch, flush and recharge the AC for $2800 with no warranty. The other was to replace the compressor and all associated parts for $6000 with a warranty. I paid the $195 diagnostic fee and took our vehicle to another shop nearby. They replaced the compressor, checked all the other components, flushed/recharged and warrantied the parts and labor for $2300. Blackwell may do good work but their prices to me are not reasonable and I won't be considering them in the future. read more

I brought my vehicle in Yesterday for an oil change that used to cost $85.00, now cost$100(costs go up for various reasons Tariffs, etc.) Honestly,I forgot there was an estimate For 1hr. Diagnostic and1/2 =$195.00 . My bill was $302.92 When I found out the cost my budget was blown . I am A Senior Citizen of 75 living on a fixed SS INCOME! My rent is 50% of my Check.(OUCH).The $195 is equivalent to 2 wks of groceries. Will go to Food Pantries! I shared this is food off my plate. Taking your car in service is scary. Most of us don't know enough about today's complex vehicles to know if we are being taken for a proverbial ride. So trust is PARAMOUNT when choosing your service company. The great news is that Aaron at Blackwell is knowledgeable and TRUSTWORTHY. If he says you can delay the service, then you can. If he says it needs to be repaired now, then it really does. The prices aren't super low, but they are fair and you know you're not being charged for work that wasn't done or that doesn't need to be done. After spending more than $6000 for repairs, my car was picked up for transport to me in MN. The car arrived about 2 days later and was completely dead. I had it towed to a repair center in MN and spent another $660 on electrical repairs to get it operating. *****update #2***** The owner Tom called us. We were able to explain it was the lack of communication about what was needed on the vehicle throughout its time there that was our main complaint. He was personable and assured us they would be better at communication and that the issues would be addressed. They are now diagnosing the cooling issue on the vehicle and updating us appropriately. I initially said I would not be taking my vehicle back, however, Tom seems to be doing what is right and values his customers experience, hence the change in the review. ***** Update to review***** Blackwell contacted us and offered to tow the vehicle back to their shop and diagnose the overheating issue at no cost to us. We asked for thorough communication on what the issue is and the cost to fix. I will post an updated review when we learn more. Original review We have a restored 65 ranchero. We waited for 2 months on a wait list to get this vehicle in. Pretty much everything in this car has been redone except for stuff pertaining to the fuel system. When we brought the vehicle in we advised we had about $6000 to put into the car and needed to know why it wasn't turning over. We also asked for the fluids to be gone through and to let us know of safety concerns with the vehicle. The staff at Blackwell was not communicative with us at all. They began replacing huge parts of the fuel system without knowing what the problem was and why it was not turning over. We paid them $2500 to replace the fuel tank and pump because they thought that was the issue with the vehicle. We then did not hear anything from the staff and received an additional bill for about $6000. When we received that bill we were utterly confused on how we were already at $8500 and they did not even notify us on what work they were doing or ask for authorization prior to doing that work. They also advised they still could not get the vehicle running. The vehicle was having the same problem as when we brought it in. They then replaced the fuel injectors (which was the least expensive portion of this fiasco) and the vehicle began to run. We were told today the vehicle was in good working order and we could pick the car up. We ended up paying them $9500 in total and upon driving the vehicle home, it began overheating and shitting coolant everywhere. Blackwell was closed so we could not call them, but never in my life have I spent almost $10,000 in car repairs on a restored vehicle with a brand new engine to have it still not safely running. This place is a scam and you will leave with a car that has not been cared for. They have completely unskilled mechanics working here and should not have taken on a job that they did not know how to do. When came here because they said prided themselves in restoration work and this was subpar work. We are not new to old vehicles and have restored cars in the past so we understand things come up in the process but to let your mechanics run a muck and charge whatever they want under no supervision and with no communication with the customer is ridiculous. When we got the surprise invoice advising the vehicle still wasn't running we called and spoke to management and we were told they they don't have control over the work and labor their mechanics do on the cars. Blackwell Automotive is one of the few automotive repair shops left that still cares about their customers as much as they do their bottom line. In particular, the shop at 40th street and E. Greenway. If you need something serviced or repaired on your vehicle they will take care of it at a competitive price and guarantee their work. In the case your vehicle has some issuers or needed repairs done but it isn't critical to get it done today or your car will blow up. They will inform you, educate you and let you know it's going to be something that needs to be taken care of in the near future. Today, the majority of automotive service centers will treat these issues as they needed to be done yesterday and try to sell you at least of one of these services today. Not because your vehicle needed it done at this time, but because it helps there bottom line while hurting yours. In Arizona the service industry as a whole isn't very good. I e always said if you find a good handyman, plumber, landscaper whatever it may be, I'd keep them, most Arizonans already know this and why referrals from your friends is usually the best lead you can get when searching for a service industry. So I am referring Blackwell So with all that said I would certainly reach out to them in the event of any repairs you may need done on your vehicle or if you have just a general question. So they ran my battery down and blamed it on the weather. It is a four-year-old battery that has 6000 miles on it from California. The car has been in Arizona for two weeks. I haven't had any issues with the battery. When I picked up my car the The blonde woman at the counter announced to me that my battery was dead and that they weren't going to do anything about it because it was a four-year-old battery and this is Arizona. I explained to her that this vehicle has only been in Arizona for a few weeks there is no reason for that battery to be dead. She laughed in my face, sarcastically told me "it is what it is, that's Arizona". She actually laughed in my face, she was not nice and I no longer consider these people to be honest. They jumped it for me to get home, I have driven it for two days with out any issues with the battery. Obviously they ran it down. read more

Stay away from these crooks. Tom Blackwell is the most unprofessional, unethical, and crooked automotive shop owner. I dropped my car off for an estimate and it took him a month to take a look at it and once he did he provided me no estimate for work or even a ballpark cost. He called me after a month and said he will look at it next week and give me a call once he's looked it over. A few days later i get a call from him telling me it's ready to be picked up. I asked him how much and what was done and he said he didn't know and for me to just come in and go over it. I get there and it's a $2000 bill!!! For a 1971 Pinto i needed to sell which i told him up front. He provided no estimate for work and i had to call the police to get my car released. He then started cutting out parts from the car and told me he would "take the f***ing tires off and I'll have to get a flatbed to get it out of here." He then pushed the car into the street and left it there. Luckily the cops pulled up as he was doing that. Very angry, aggressive, vindictive person.
