Pepperoni Deep Dish with original sauce
Shirley D.

We really wanted to like this place. My husband loves deep dish pizza which is hard to get in St Louis. We ordered before we took the drive knowing deep dish pizzas take a while to bake. Good move. We still had a 15 minute wait after we arrived. No problem ordered beers and soda. They have several Urban Chestnut beers on tap. Win! I went with my favorite Zwickel. Then the pizza came out. My husband was persuaded by the person answering the phone to go with the original sauce. It was the color of chili and a tad spicy. I think we would have like the tomato basil better. We stuck with just pepperoni to get a good taste of what the pizza tastes like. Plenty of mozzarella. I didn't care for the crust...compatible to pop tart crust. Served with paper plates, however, we did have silverware. No table service. Family friendly. There is ski ball and other games to play. Just sorry. Not our thing.

Great pizza, friendly staff, make sure you have plenty of time. Loved the music. We ordered a thin crust pizza. The Chef's special sauce was a little too spicy for me, but the pizza was delicious. There is also a nice patio area of the weather permits.

I have been wanting to try Blackthorn since a recommendation from a co-worker, years ago and I finally made it. Man, oh man! The Chicago style pizza is absolutely delicious! We ordered a medium and that was too much for the two of us. I forced a second slice because it was so good and we still had 1/2 the pizza to take home. My husband and I marveled at the weight of the pizza box with 4 slices in it. They are not messing around. The crust is perfection and the traditional sauce is spot on and that cheese! The place itself was pretty cool and the service was very good and very friendly and helpful. Loved the Gen X music playing!! If you're tired of St. Louis style pizza and want a delicious and filling pie, you must try Blackthorn!!

Took a first timer to Blackthorn on a Sunday afternoon! We got there just after open and there was only one other table the entire time we were there. Pizza took awhile to come out, especially for how few people were in there. But once it did, it was huge and filled with toppings (my favorite). The bartender was SUPER friendly and accommodating when we asked her to find a game on the TV.

Front of the restaurant, love the outside option as well.

I visited Blackthorn Pub on a coworker's recommendation. The pizza was amazing! However, if you're ordering the Chicago-style pizza, be aware that it takes about 45-50 minutes to prepare and cook. If you don't want to wait that long, I suggest ordering online beforehand. The atmosphere inside was great--nice and quiet, with the Cardinals game on. I ordered a 12" two-topping pizza, and my wife got a 10" three-topping pizza. When I say I was full after just one piece, I really mean it! I wish I had ordered a smaller one, but now I know for next time. I had leftovers for almost a week. Either way, we will definitely be back. If you haven't tried this place yet, you should!

Service was great and it was the best tasting pizza I've had in a long time to be so thick. This place is reasonably priced without a large confusing menu.

The pizza here is always good and has the perfect spice! The service was okay. You order at the bar and then the staff bring the food was it's done! The restaurant had a neighborhood vibe as it's considered a pub! Plenty of seating inside or outdoor. Street parking is available! The pub is mostly frequented by the folx in the neighborhood. However my husband and I drive a nice little ways for the pizza because it's worth it!

We stumbled onto a post about Chicago style deep dish pizza in STL. Being monster fans of deep dish, we decided to check it out. We left very impressed. The neighborhood dive bar appearance gives the place a super casual feel. Service was great. We ordered their deep dish meat lovers with their original sauce. OMG it was so good. The amount of meat on it defied imagination. The dinner got better with some Bells Two Hearted Ale, a favorite IPA. DEFINITELY a place to check out.

As a Chicago transplant, when I picked up this 10" box and it weighed 12 pounds, I knew I'd found my new favorite pizza joint!

Amazing Chicago style pizza right here in STL. The atmosphere of the place looked really cool as I was picking up my to-go order.

We enjoyed hanging out there for a few drinks. It has a dark, moody, comfy feel. I tried to take pictures but it was pretty dark and they didn't turn out well. I had the "Yes We Have One" - it's an espresso martini. It wasn't as sweet as I prefer, but it was good and I had more than one so it couldn't have been too bad! The other three enjoyed their drinks as well. I'd definitely go back and have a few cocktails in a cozy little area!

I ordered their pork chop, which came with asparagus and layered potatoes. The pork chop was served with a chutney sauce made from apricot, black, and golden raisins. This pork chop is somewhat unique to St. Louis; it's a huge bone-in chop, nothing in Naples, FL can compare. My chop was cooked perfectly. Now, as to never being here, I am exiting the building. There is a small dining area with an Irish band playing. I turned to my son and said I had been here before, pointed to the table I sat at, and told him I had Irish stew. It was in my drinking days, and I am sure I sang all the tunes with the band.

We were seated and it was even busier. It took some time to order drinks and even longer to order and receive our food. Nothing unreasonable especially given the sheer amount of people there. But guess what we enjoyed our table conversations while the drinks were routinely refreshed and when the food arrived it was perfect. While "just basic bar sandwiches and a burger " everything was prepared as ordered. The appropriate temps. Mostly importantly it was just good tasting. Hats off to the cooks and the service providers! Impressive

Despite that, the other tables seemed to receive constant attention while our waitress disappeared for long stretches of time. We were initially seated in the side room with a large industrial fan blowing so hard that it was moving the menus off the table. We waited for the waitress to return so we could request a different table, but she never came back, so we moved ourselves to another empty table away from the fan. She seemed unhappy about the move and told us we might have to relocate again because they were expecting a busy day. Honestly, the restaurant was empty, and we would have been finished long before any rush started -- which we were. I asked for ketchup with my burger, and it didn't arrive until after I had already finished eating. Overall, the service was very poor. Unfortunately, the food was also extremely salty -- and we're people who normally enjoy salt. I had the Farmhouse Burger with Brussels sprouts and mac and cheese, while my wife ordered the steak and fries cooked medium well. The steak came out medium rare, and both her fries and my burger and Brussels sprouts were overly salted. The one bright spot was the mac and cheese, which we took to go. My daughter tried some and said it was the best she'd ever had. To top it off, our bill came to an even $100 with tip, and all we had were waters and the items mentioned above. We had been wanting to try Retreat for quite a while, so this experience was very disappointing. Between the poor service and underwhelming food, we probably won't be coming back.

I had the Irish cheese sandwich, Justin went with the corned beef -- and both were genuinely good. Comforting, hearty, and exactly what you hope for in a pub meal. Now... the kitchen was moving a bit slow this visit. Was it noticeable? Yes. Was it worth the wait? Also yes. Because Sam -- the female bartender -- absolutely made the experience. Fun, engaging, and the kind of personality that makes you feel like you're already a regular even if it's your first visit. That kind of service turns a "slow day" into a good memory. The menu is packed with authentic Irish favorites, and honestly, next time we're absolutely going to lean fully into the classics -- because this feels like a place that does traditional comfort food right. One small wish: I really wish they made their own chips. The bagged chips were a little lackluster and felt like a missed opportunity next to an otherwise hearty, made-with-care menu. Overall: a great spot that was likely just having an off day -- and still absolutely worth your time. Don't leave without ordering the pear cider. It is absolutely fabulous. Being a firecracker myself, I ordered the Firecracker Smashburger. It's a single patty, with Pepper Jack Cheese, Tomato-Onion-Jalapeno Relish, Drizzled with a Tangy Fire Ranch and served on a Martin's Potato Roll. The burger was juicy and had those crispy edges that a smash burger is known for. My favorite cheese is Pepper Jack, so that was a big plus for me. The relish added that extra kick that made it a true, Firecracker. I can't enjoy a burger without fries and Jack offers long skinny fries. They had a crispy shell and a soft hot inside. They were simply seasoned with just the right amount of salt. I was impressed that the ketchup was 100% Natural. That gets a big thumbs up. When enjoying a burger and fries, a nice cold beer is always the adult beverage of choice. JN offers a small variety of craft beers on draft and three popular Anheuser-Busch products. I enjoyed a Gumballhead from 3 Floyds Brewing. An American Pale Wheat is a perfect lunchtime beer. The bartenders are personable and offer warm service.
