We live in the Flint area and have eaten at Blackstone many times over the years. Unfortunately, after today, we will not be returning, and I cannot recommend this restaurant based primarily on how we were treated by the owner and staff. We had a $25 Blackstone gift card that we received a few years ago. I completely understand that we should have used it sooner, but we simply didn't have it with us on previous visits. Today, we presented it and were told it would not be honored because, according to the waitress, the restaurant had changed ownership. I asked to speak with the owner because I wanted to have a reasonable conversation and find a fair solution. The restaurant is still Blackstone, at the same address, and operating continuously under the same name. I also explained my understanding that federal law provides protections for gift-card holders and asked him to at least see whether the card could be verified or processed. The card has a scan strip and serial number, and we even had the original receipt showing the $25 balance. His response was that he had no way to scan it and that it was the previous owner's responsibility. I asked him to try or find another way to verify it, but he refused. What really bothered me wasn't the $25. It was the complete unwillingness to even attempt to find a reasonable solution. Instead, the conversation became increasingly defensive and confrontational. At one point, he told me that he was a small-business owner who was struggling and couldn't be expected to take responsibility for someone else's obligation. I explained that I am also a small business owner and understand the challenges, but I also believe that taking care of customers and doing what is right matters. He then told me, specifically, that he DOES NOT care about his customers or their reviews. That's a pretty shocking thing to hear from a business owner. Eventually, after the argument, he yelled that he would give us the $25 off. But by that point, it felt less like an attempt to resolve the situation and more like something he was throwing at us after attacking us for even asking. Then, immediately afterward, our server made a sarcastic comment along the lines of, "So can I get $25 off too? Can I give everyone $25 off?" It was condescending and made us feel like we were somehow unreasonable for expecting a gift card to be honored. The owner then stormed off with the card. That he kept. We ultimately paid our bill in full with cash and left a fair tip. We did not accept the $25 discount because, at that point, accepting it didn't feel like the right way to resolve the situation. As we left, we told the owner we had paid our bill in full and wished him a good day. His response was a sarcastic "thank you." And that's really the disappointing part. $25 should never be worth losing a customer over. There were countless ways this could have been handled professionally. He could have tried to verify the card, offered a reasonable compromise, or simply had a respectful conversation with us. Instead, he chose to become confrontational and make us feel like we were the problem for asking a reasonable question. As for the food, it was a mixed experience. My date had the chicken club sandwich and said it was just "meh." It had very little meat on it. I had the ribs, which I thought were good I'd give them about 3.5 stars. The dry rub was good, and I ordered the sauce on the side, although the small dipping container provided wasn't nearly enough for the full order. Overall, I'd put the food somewhere around 2 stars. We sat outside, which I actually enjoyed because Back to the Bricks was going on and I like being able to watch the cars. There was a band playing inside, and it was extremely loud. If you're looking for a dinner where you can actually have a conversation, I'd recommend sitting outside. Unfortunately, the food isn't what will keep me from coming back. The owner and staff are the reason. I'd give the customer service experience zero stars. One other thing I find confusing: the owner repeatedly emphasized that this is a "different company" because ownership changed. Yet the restaurant is still operating under the same name, at the same address, and the online review history appears to continue as though it is the same establishment. If the new ownership truly considers this an entirely different company, I would think creating a new business presence and review page would make that distinction much clearer. I'm generally a very reasonable customer. I wasn't asking for anything outrageous. I simply wanted a $25 gift card addressed to the restaurant to be acknowledged and, at the very least, for someone to make a good faith effort to determine whether it could be honored. Instead, I left feeling attacked for even asking. Blackstone has lost me as a customer. We won't be back, and based on our experience today, I cannot recommend it. read more

I've been here several times and have always enjoyed the food! Today I took a friend here for her first time and we both left full and pleased. We walked in, waited less than a minute to be sat down, and the young man who waited on us was quick, friendly and attentive. From the moment you walk in, you feel the warmth and rustic nature of the open dining room and bar set up. After we got our table, we decided to split the glazed Brussels sprouts (gotta get that veggie intake!) and a side order of corn bread (personally one of my favorite places to get cornbread--strongly recommended if you like your cornbread on the sweeter side). For our entree, we split a couple orders of the smokehouse wings (dry rub and the Korean bbq). The Korean bbq is my go to flavor for their wings but they have several flavors, including the regular dry rub which was very tasty. Before I came to Flint, MI as I always do, I look for BBQ locations to see what is around and how they are rated. I saw Blackstone's come up, which is where I was staying and figured it looked really good. I was disappointed when I wanted to order BBQ chicken and the bartender said they don't offer that anymore. So I got the chili and wings to go, at his suggestion. WOW! Just WOW! The dry wings I got were amazing and the chili, by itself, should of been a meal on it's own. The bad part is I have too much food to finish, the good part is I know what I will have for breakfast. I defiantly recommend this restaurant for some great food. Next time in Flint, this will be my first choice and the chili will be at the top of my list. read more

There just arent many positives I can say about this place. Street-parking only, they have live music but its so damn loud you cant talk to the person next to you and its a small venue, way too small for that. We actually left without ordering the last time we were there because it was so deafening. Food was not good the last time I did order but frankly it wasnt good when they first opened either so no change there, for example, Ive never had leek soup be burnt before but there it is. My family and I were visiting from Florida for a funeral and decided to explore for local eats downtown. We came across Blackstone Smokehouse. The exterior of the building was very eye-catching and the inside was was nice. We decided to get some food to-go so we sat at the bar. We were greeted by Zack and he said "anything you order is great, you won't be disappointed." We decided to order drinks while we wait for our food. The drinks were Blackstonetini, Transfusion and a Red Sangria. The drinks were great and the food came out pretty quick. We ordered 3 different flavors of wings (Blackberry BBQ, Bourbon, and Thai Chili), and the loaded fries with brisket. Zack was right everything was delicious! Wings were fried to perfection, crispy skin on the outside and juicy on the inside. The bourbon was our favorite, but the other flavors were good as well. The food was still warm when we walked back to the hotel. We had a great time talking to Zack and his service was awesome! When we come back to the Flint area we will definitely be back! The food was tasty and we both enjoyed it. My only complaint is that they don't give you enough friend cauliflower for the price they charge. First and foremost: It is not a smokehouse. Nothing we ordered- brisket or chopped pork, was smoked or even had smoked flavor. Also, they charged extra for bbq sauce, and the brisket (very fatty) came dry without any. Also charged extra $2 for the side choice of mac and cheese (mediocre, don't believe the rave reviews), after the waitress recommended it as one of the free side choices that came with the food. Appetizer of queso seemed like canned cheese dip with canned Hormel chili mixed in, with sub-par chip. It's a beautiful restaurant, but sadly the food seems very uninspired and was priced at a level you would expect much better. We really really wished that this place would be as good as it was when it first opened years ago, even though the menu and owners are different. I wish Gordon Ramsay would visit with his Kitchen Nightmares show and inspire/re-inspire the owners, because we would love for it to be a go-to place again as it once was when it first opened years ago with the other menu and original owners. I am a skeptic - but my last visit to Blackstone's deserve an updated rating of 4 stars. Those of you familiar with the venue may be disappointed with the loss of the Irish pub and restaurant as it was, but the owners brought in a new culinary treat; wood fired pizza. If you like thin-crust, wood fired pizza, there are several pizzas on the menu that will be sure to peak your interest and satisfy your senses, or else you may just create your own. The dough is just right for the perfect crust, even though I would love to see the toppings spread more closely to the edges. If the Irish theme is kept (it still feels like there is a tad of unresolved identity crisis), I would love to see more scotches and whiskeys as well as traditional Irish dishes on the menu. If you don't care about any of that and are just looking for a place downtown Flint for a bite and some drinks with friends, this is a good place to come. read more

She suggested that I ask the guy in the back by the big table if it was the meeting. She was not overly friendly or outgoing. I ordered a burger minus the bourbon sauce. It came out with the sauce on it. She asked if I wanted it remade or wanted to try it first. I decided rather than wait while the others ate to try it. The burger was ok, nothing great. If you haven't gone to Blackstone's in a while, or haven't gone, I strongly suggest giving this place a try. We used to live downtown and occasionally went here- the ambience was always nice but the food was hit or miss; sometimes overdone, underdone, dry, yadda yadda... it definitely earned the 3 stars it has on here... ...but now it's different. Some changes inside, including a redone bar, seating, and a performance stage. The menu has seen the most revamping- whatever you remember from 2 years ago or more, forget it- it's all gone, replaced by a barbecue-centric cuisine that has that Midwestern industrial niche (like making bacon an option for everything- finally, someone gets it!) We opted for the salmon spread and smoked queso appetizers which were phenomenal- the only thing I'd suggest is getting some house chips or unique snackers with this. Our mains included the brisket melt and the bacon bourbon burger... they nailed it with both. Moist, healthy portions, with the right amount of accoutrements that don't overpower the meal's main event. Our server, Arianna, deserves some recognition as my wife quizzed her on the oddest stuff ("Are there any old pictures of this place?" "Do you take reservations (for an event 2 months from now)?"), and she passed easily, as well as being attentive and punctual. It seemed as though everyone was- looking around, the place was bustling- by the time we left at 6:30p it was full, and the live band (which they have one every weekend) was warming up on stage. We kept overhearing nothing but praise for the staff and for the food from nearby tables. We'll be back soon... hopefully tonight after our engagement, if they have room! Much improved! I've always liked Blackstone's as a bar, but not so much as a restaurant since it opened. Times have changed. While I always considered the food to be more of an afterthought than anything else when it came to Blackstone's, the culinary team has turned things around for the better as of late. The last few times I've dined here, the food has been pretty good. What used to be mediocre food at best (better described as unappealing pub grub to satisfy your hunger while out drinking and nothing more) has turned into quality cuisine that can hold its own. Blackstone's famous mac and cheese dish has improved quite a bit. I was never a fan of it before, but gave it another shot and was impressed. There's a reason Blackstone's is known for it. I found it bland and mushy before, but those days are long gone. Now it's a staple of real comfort food, very savory and baked with just the right amount of cheese. Kudos to the kitchen staff for finally getting it right. Other winners on their pared down menu (it was once so big that there was no way they could execute anything very well) recently have been the Upside Down Quinoa Burger and Farmer's Market sandwich, both excellent options for vegetarians. I rather liked the Irish Onion Soup, but felt a bit letdown with the Potato Leek Soup. Something about it was off- it was rather bland and I didn't really care for the texture. Other than that, the Seared Tuna was not quite to my liking, but it was pretty decent. The salmon was even better, grilled nicely with ample seasoning. The Cherry Tomato Caprese Skewers were rather good and made for a nice lunch. The fresh mozzarella mixed with cherry tomatoes and basil over arugula salad was definitely to my liking. My husband seemed to like them as well. I still don't recommend any of the pizzas. The crust is still rubbery and inedible in my opinion. Honestly, I think Blackstone's should get out of the pizza business and leave that to other restaurants and continue to focus on what they do best- salads, soups, fish entrees, and comfort foods that go well with premium cocktails and craft beers. As for the service, it has improved a bit. It's not so much hit or miss, anymore. Drinks and apps hit the table pretty quickly, but the kitchen still takes awhile getting entrees out of the kitchen. Still, I'd rather they focus on executing the food properly as opposed to having food that's served quickly and microwaved to the point of annihilation. The cocktail menu is still impressive. Blackstone's makes some of the best vodka, whisky and bourbon cocktails that I've found of late. The beer selection is good, with plenty of good draft options and craft beers, too. As always, the ambiance is great. I still like the exposed brick walls, casual atmosphere and outdoor seating. I love what the owners did what the old Blackstone's department store, turning the once-vacant space into a thriving downtown business and paying homage to the name. I'm so glad that Blackstone's has come around from being just a nice downtown bar to a quality restaurant. read more

In the Flint area around dinner time, we got a recommendation to try Blackstone. While trying to locate the restaurant and parking, we ventured around town a little bit. The Blackstone was the only place with a crowd. Win. This place was boppin'. Many large parties, some dressed up and some casual. All walks of people were mingling. The band was great and the atmosphere was fun. Service was pleasant. Our drinks took a while to arrive because the bartender is also the manager and had 'managerial issues' to take care of during the dinner rush. The 'Irish food' on the menu is fairly expensive. Twice as much as the rest of the menu. It's not like you import a boxty. I ordered a burger. It was cooked to my liking and the fries on the side were outstanding. I met some friends and coworkers here on a Tuesday for their trivia night. We got there early and ordered dinner. The set up was nice, a lot of room between tables so it didn't feel crowded. We had their nacho's for an appetizer while we waited for more friends to come in. The nacho's were good, nothing special but good. I had a cheeseburger for dinner with fries, so did my sister. The burger was really good. The fries were disgusting. They tasted like they had been freezer burned or old. One of my friends had a long hair in her salad, first bite. The owner was such a nice guy. He was very attentive and very hands on. All and all it was a good trip and we enjoyed most of the food. Trivia is a blast! read more

A dish that stood out to me on my last visit was the Tomato Bisque, which I think was a special that day. Update from my last review--------- I'm not sure if they wanted to "revamp the menu" or if there was a change in ownership. My boyfriend and I used to love this place. But the last time we came here which was last weekend, we are for sure not coming back. They don't have many apps, sides, or entree's. Their cocktails are now subpar, and their food is not great at all. I ordered pretzel sticks and they are nothing like they used to be. They were obviously microwaved which I don't mind but they were all cold in the middle. My friend ordered them about an hour later and said the same thing. I thought I'd give them another chance and orders mozzarella sticks, which was a mistake. The marinara sauce was think like tomato paste.l which I personally didn't like. The mozzarella sticks were cold as well. I'm very sad they changed everything. It isn't even an Irish pub anymore. I'm surprised there's only 3 stars. Went here last night and had a great time. Our waitress was great, I don't remember her name, but she was always there when we needed her. Loved my Shepard's pie, and the drinks I had were great! My favorite, was tspiced sangria. Didn't care for their Chicken Alfredo that my boyfriend got, but he liked it. We got their pork nachos, and they were sooo good! I highly recommend this place and will definitely come back. We went here for a baseball team dinner. We had one waitress for 40 people. The drinks went dry more than once unless you were drinking coke for which there were pitchers. We sat there for over 2 hours and the last player had to get his meal to go as the rest of us were already done eating. The place seems to be under new ownership and the menu is completely revamped. Unfortunately nothing is what it used to be standard-wise. The food quality has tremendously gone downhill and the menu itself has downsized extremely. Usually smaller menus mean better quality food, however it was clear that food was being microwaved, overcooked, over-salted, etc. It's just so bad compared to what it used to be. It's really unfortunate because Blackstones was one of my go to spots downtown that always guaranteed delicious apps, entrees and some of my favorite salads and salmon. I will say that the service has always been great in my experience. The waitstaff is always really friendly and accommodating but other than that there really aren't any pros.
