Total black - iced coffee from Blackstar
    Rhiannon S.

The iced coffee are the best. I especially love the Total Black. It's sweetened with maple syrup and vanilla so it's very drinkable, and not bitter at all. The coffee here is very strong, actually a bit too strong for my liking, but my husband loves it and now thinks other cafes are too weak.

If you have a nose for good coffee I am not preaching to you. Chances are I have already walked past or sat near you on the cracked pavements of Thomas st's illustrious Blackstar coffee. Growing up with a general indifference to coffee (and with a strong fear of instant Nescafe.) I was at first hesitant to try their famous blends but at first sip even a coffee rookie like me could tell this stuff was magic. Strong, robust but velvety smooth their range of coffees are the perfect thing to start the day with. But it's not just the bottled iced coffees that keep me coming, It's the sense of community this place exudes. They offer a unique range of late night activities from monthly ukelele nights to mini Jazz concerts and poetry slams. If you are in the West End vicinity, I strongly encourage you to check this place out.

Blackstar is part of my daily routine. I have to have it. It's like a warm hug in the morning. Getting a coffee isn't alway quick, but perfection takes time, and patience is a virtue. I'm so glad I live close by :)

Blackstar Coffee Roasters is one of those typical West End cafes: a little hipster, a lot of yum. Yes, the coffee is good, possibly even brilliant. No burnt beans here. And the locals keep coming back, so they are definitely doing something right. The choices are varied and the iced coffee is amazing. It does take a little while to make, so this is not the place to go if you're in a rush. The food is generally what you would expect from a somewhat upmarket cafe, tasty morsels (think almond croissants, pita breakfast, eggs and bacon with mushrooms) on reasonable sized dishes and not horribly priced either at around $10-$15 a dish. Though the choices for food are limited it makes up for it in deliciousness. The staff are great and friendly which helps the atmosphere stay relaxed. This is good, because you may get caught in the smog of hipster pretentiousness from the clientele if you're not careful. But overall its a nice place to just chill; you could sit here and read a book and sip coffee all day. Which is good because as I wrote before, you will be waiting a while for your coffee. This place is fine, good vibes but I wouldn't say the best of the best. Possibly one of the best in Brisbane though. Just don't come here if you are allergic to hipsters, you may lose it and knock over a pushbike parked out the front.

It's not uncommon to see people walking around west end with beer bottles in hand at anytime of the day. If you do start seeing more and more people downing stubbies mid-morning, however, it might be worth taking a peek at the label. Blackstar Coffee is a cafe situated just off West End's main street whose good word of mouth has seen it's popularity grow exponentially. Stop in on Blackstar and there will no doubt be a colourful mix of characters enjoying themselves in it's unique garage setting. Whilst food and your regular espresso type coffees are available (and delicious), look no further than the fridge of beer bottles filled with iced coffee. Already mixed they are a quick and easy way to get your caffeine fix. Without the cream, ice-cream and syrup that usually accompany an iced coffee these chilled bottles taste of fresh tasting espresso with the slightest hint of sugar. With the choice of both full or soy milk every one is catered for and even if it is not your thing the soy option is well worth a try for the unique nuttiness it brings out in the black star blend.

Located at the back of an industrial area near Springwood, this hidden gem of a coffee place is well worth the visit. You will return time and time again. Apart from the amazing range of gourmet food, their house blend 'Gratitude' coffee which is roasted and produced on-site is to die for. Extraction caters for all dietary needs, and it is very proud of the fact that it uses and respects sustainable practices. I love the way that it supports local industries including the dairy and meat farmers. I also love the fact that the staff are continually being involved in community events, and they excel in the way they give back to the community and inspire their customers to do the same. You feel like family. Ordering at the counter is fast and helpful and the table service is amazing. Everyone is so friendly, and continually making your dining experience wonderful. Coffee, friends, food and good times are the essences of Extraction. There are so many different places to sit and enjoy reasonably-priced coffee and food. Large, small and medium tables are surrounded by couches and antique chairs. The decor is eclectic but not pretentious. Apart from the exquisite range of coffee, Extraction also has their amazing range of cold drip coffee plus a huge assortment of tea if that's your thing. Go and try Extraction Artisan Coffee. It's a great place to meet people, relax, chill out and enjoy yourself surrounded by friendly and attentive staff. And on a personal note, for breakfast, you can't go past the vast array of choices, but for this man, the scrambled eggs are done to perfection and the locally produced bacon is exquisite. I love this quote from their online menu which really sums up the whole Extraction experience: "Sharing food and enjoying coffee together is the equivalent of saying you matter."

My hubby and I recently stayed in beautiful Burleigh Waters for a few days during a big trip to Australia. We already knew that the coffee culture in this amazing country is a big deal, and couldn't wait to sip flat whites every day at various cafes we'd already researched from Sydney to the Gold Coast to the Whitsundays! Once we arrived in Burleigh Heads, we checked out Quest one morning, and quickly realized that this was THE place to be! We ended up going every morning and loved the laid back ambiance and friendly, local vibes. Even the owner seemed to know everyone on a first name basis and greeted everyone! Our coffees were always perfectly rich, bold and balanced, and they paired so nicely with one of their delicious baked goods (everything is baked in-house btw!). What made our experience even better was that they had a variety of yummy vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options. Our favorites were their banana bread and zucchini & pineapple bread, which they will also toast for you if you'd like. We honestly miss this place already and wish they had a location here in the Bay Area, California! Guess we'll just have to find a way to get back to the Gold Coast again soon!

What looks like the door to a business unit is in fact the entry to a bustling coffee shop. Behind this modest door is the gateway to the realm of Di Bella Coffee. I was amazed just how many people were inside when I walked through the door. They were waiting patiently in amongst the coffee paraphernalia for their coffee, in a surprisingly large venue with plenty of tables and even a kid's space. Like all good coffee shops, there's a range of sweet treats and light meals on offer including the brand new, wackily named 'Kwak Scroll' from renowned Oregano Bakery in Sydney. Di Bella are the exclusive retailer of the lightly frosted cinnamon scrolls, in Queensland. The coffee shop serves as a chance to offer new products and test public reaction. Sorry if I am waxing lyrical a bit, I really love coffee! And so does Mr Di Bella it would seem (it has after all made him a millionaire), who has set up not just a cafe but also a coffee training school and a drive thru delivering top notch espresso coffee through your car window. Like other big QLD roaster Merlo, you get a free coffee to enjoy at the cafe when you buy some beans to take home. They do 13 different regular blends, with my favourite two being the 'Felici' (Italian for 'lucky') and 'Arnika Reserve' (named after Phillip's daughter).
