I had to try the birch beer and it was the prefect amount of fizz and syrup. Pictures of the previous owners and hot dog competition winners made it feel like a real community, family restaurant. Blackie's is a long time staple of anyone in the Waterbury/Cheshire area. I was in town visiting family for the Holiday and decided to call in an order for an hot dog and cheeseburger. I was greeted promptly on the phone to receive my order and when I arrived it was nice to see everything being made fresh and not just heated up. The inside has very old school and small town vibes which makes this restaurant very nostalgic. The food: Hot dog was an all beef hot dog with amazing bite to the skin! I would definitely come back for another reasonable price of 2.75. The cheese burger while made fresh did not taste any different than a fast food burger. Great hotdogs! Buns are scrumptious. Don't care for the hot relish. I like Cains sweet pickle relish and fresh chopped onions in addition to spicy mustard. Don't go on Friday-they are closed. But even with just the spicy mustard on the dogs they are still likely the best you ever ate. read more

While heading to restaurant depot, i passed this place. With such cute curb appeal i knew i was stopping by after my stop at restaurant depot. I got a hot dog and a birch beer. The hot dog was really good! Omg! The diner bar set up is really cute! It was a nice day so it felt great to down a hot dog and just chill. I don't know a birch beer is, but OMG! It was good! Look, I know this place is a Connecticut institution. And if you like it, great. But I was just underwhelmed. The dogs are not cheap, they're not prepared in any special way, and the lack of either A) a bounty of toppings to choose from or B) a special "sauce" or "chili" that people rave about from miles around is a tad disappointing. The front door that leads from the parking lot into Blackie's is a magic door. It may look like a door, but it's really a time machine portal. Step into the portal and you materialize into a diner from 1955; hell maybe even 1945. You look at the menu board and you can count all of the food offerings on one hand. Hot dog. Hamburger. Cheeseburger. Bag of chips. That's all, folks. What else is there? Soda. Shake. Ice cream. That's it. Eating here was such an enjoyable experience I hardly know where to start. You order at a front counter. Since 99.9% of the people are ordering hot dogs, no one says "I'd like a hot dog", because that's a given. Instead, patrons just shout out the number of dogs they want. So you hear a lot of "two". "four", "five", etc. I'm not much of a fan of hot dog relish, but they have a home-made concoction that looks awful (think lumpy brown barbecue sauce), but is very tasty -- you really have to try it. The dining room has dark wood panelling which makes it look as old and retro as the place really is. Blackie's is about as old school as old school gets. As for the food, well the dogs were superb. My fiancé is very disappointed after reminiscing on how this used to be in 1996-1998. He said the hotdogs used to be boiled and grilled and split open and had a crunch to it when you bite in. He said the flavor of the hotdog changed. the hot relish was red and green with more spice to it, which he said taste better. We drove about 45 minutes for me to try the hotdogs. I really wanted to love Blackies. It's a traditional little hotdog shop, the one we all went to as kids and adored. I didn't grow up around the area but had several local hotdog stands similar to this. I was very excited to try their famous, no-frills hotdog. If I hadn't gone with my husband who knew how to order, I would have walked right back out. They have their own language and honestly, not any helpful menu or pricing. I had no idea what the options were and was quite intimidated. Maybe that's a local thing that they enjoy? I wasn't impressed. Then the food. Tasted like any boiled hot dog. Tried this place recently. Have always been a huge hotdog fan and kept hearing good things. I based my review after comparing this place to Capital Lunch and Frankie's. I have to say I was very happy they use Martin Rosol dogs. Always a good sign. The hotdogs are excellent. I liked the combo they had of relish and mustard. Very tasty. They serve the dogs plain and you add what you like similar to Frankie's. They don't offer chilli or meat sauce on the dogs. Didn't love that but again mustard/relish combo was very good. My only two negatives were I tried the cheeseburger. That wasn't so good. Would not recommend or ever get again. It was bland and had a stale roll. The other issue is the place didn't seem very clean. Not bad but not overly clean. Kinda run down. They could use a revamp in there. Overall though if you want a good hotdog and in that area I would say absolutely stop by and try it! Hotdog with mustard/relish gets the 4 stars for me. Everything else... nothing special. But... it is a hotdog place and that's the reason to go if that's what you're craving. read more

Let me start by saying that I was greeted with love when I walked in, a few patrons awaited their orders at the main bar stool setting and then on both side of Blackie's you have a few tables that you can both sit and enjoy your meal with friends. I ordered 2 with a large drink. On one dog, I simply added mustard and on the other, the spicy relish; which believe you / me, is NOTHING to shake a stick at but we will get there momentarily. My initial bite of the mustard topped dog was a good one. I have and always will love the snap on the skin of a good dog and that is exactly what i had received. My only gripe (small) is that the hotdogs could be a bit more beefy baby!! I want that supreme thickness and my dogs looked as if they had missed a few meals but whatever, they were still good with flavor......The bun was soft and lightly toasted, nothing too crazy and that type of crispy just adds to an already amazing hotdog IMO. Now the second hotdog with the spicy relish, prepare yourselves on this adventure for that is exactly what is happening once you take a bite....The first bite was a sizzle reel, nothing out of the ordinary with a slight kick to it but the 2nd and 3rd bite?!?!? This place rules. I saw it and immediately pulled over. It was a dark night in Cheshire and I was driving to Oxford when I was hypnotized by the lustrous neon lights of BLACKIE'S. I thought it might be a bar, honestly, it reminded me of One-Eyed Jack's in Twin Peaks and the matron there, whose name was Blackie. I really love neon signs, places that look weird, old and/or crappy and BLACKIE'S certainly hit that mark. $2 for a hot dog, $3 for a burger. Cash only. Order and eat at the bar, the relish and mustard was really delicious. I'm not a huge hot dog gal but if you're hungry and driving by and don't feel like shelling out 8$ for some artisan sandwich or whatever, Blackie's has you covered. Don't try to dance though. I can thank Yelp for learning about Blackies. It's a place I look for reasons to travel to the area. Connecticut is a hot dog state and I like Blackies best. What makes it best for me is the semi-spicy pepper relish (add mustard of course) and being a NY mustard and sauerkraut guy that's saying something. The jarred relish is good but not as good as the in-store one. You can get burgers there too without any veggies but the hotdogs are the reason to go and the fantastic toasted almond ice cream if they have it. It was my first time at Blackie's and I'm from out of state. I was visiting a friend and he said, "Let's go to Blackie's. It's a hot dog joint down the road." I love hot dogs. I was weaned on dirty water hot dogs from hot dog carts in NYC and around my home town in NJ. It's a small place but not really that small. Two garage doors open for fresh air when the weather is nice. Just like A&W Root Beer stands in NJ...or at least the few that are left. I'm here for dogs. I order dogs. Three...and a soda. My friend tells me if I like spicy, I should try the relish. On the counter are two bins in front of me. One contains a brown mustard. YES!!! Off to a good start. Mustard on all three. I look at the relish and I don't know what I'm looking at. So that only goes on one dog, but I load it up. If I'm going to take the plunge, I might as well get wet. I go for the spicy relish dog. First bite, I let it take effect and yes, the relish has a great taste and some nice heat. Not really hot. Well, maybe for some. I grew up putting hot paprika on my eggs as a kid. I don't find many wing places that are hot, and yet I know there are people that can eat a banana and cry out that their tongue is on fire. So now I'm left with two dogs just mustard. I usually judge pizza by their plain slice because lets face it, if the base isn't good, loading it on with extras isn't going to save it. The dog with just mustard was very tasty . So good that I decided to skip loaded the last one with spicy relish and just enjoy the hot dog. So, the dogs are excellent. If you're coming for hot dogs you came to the right place.
