We traveled a distance to visit Blackies after all the fantastic Yelp reviews, and left just shaking our heads. Why would anyone give this 5 stars? It HAS to be the nostalgia people feel who used to come here when they were kids. It's a good (Martin Rosol) hot dog on a cheap bun with 2 condiments (gold mustard and "spicy" relish) sitting in metal containers on the counter from which you serve yourself. The buns are the kind with "crust" on both sides; I prefer buns that can be toasted on both sides as they add texture and flavor. The mustard was standard issue and the relish - well, I guess I just don't get why anyone would rave about it. They have burgers but no one seems to mention those in the reviews. The only side available is a bag of plain potato chips. That's it. We did try a chocolate milkshake which was ok; nothing outstanding. And the service was lackluster. Not a soul with a smile working there, and it was moderately busy. Much prefer Capitol Lunch in New Britain - less expensive, fantastic sauce that is theirs alone and you can even have a hot side such as fries or onion rings! Imagine that! read more

We like good hot dogs, especially those with a signature topping or other distinguishing feature, and Blackie's has it all. We've been going there for years, not far from home, and though respect a few other spots around, Blackie's has to be #1. First, the hot dog is on the small side as dogs go, and mild too, so that means you can't eat just one. Two will do for a snack, but if it's dinner, it's three for me. I used to laugh at folks getting a burger there, until I tried putting their relish on one, and it was great. Not only does their pepper relish work well, the burger is actually great tasting, so some times I will sub in one burger. Newbies be warned they only have the pepper relish, with a decent kick, and brown mustard. My wife passes on both, and will often bring her own yellow mustard. The do sell jars of relish, so we always have a jar or two on hand at home. Oh, no chili either, and they are closed on Fridays, though do open for private parties. The building is a classic, ample parking, quick service, small rest room, and do have chips and ice cream, too. A must stop if you love hot dogs!! read more

i havent eaten much from blackies, but i see and smell it all the time .. my co-workers all love this place, and the dogs they bring back to the office always look and smell like some awesome dogs - if you like hot dogs. they make their own pepper relish which just makes the dogs even better.. not much on the menu i can eat (im a vegetarian) but i have had the milk shakes and they are great too! read more

This USED to be the absolute best place for hotdogs in CT. I grew up with Blackie's and anyone that lives in the area all know about the Blackie's charm and perfect hotdogs with their signature hot relish. Well I am very sad to say that this is no longer true. For as long as I have been going to Blackie's since I was a little kid, they have been serving Hummel Brother's hotdogs as they have always advertised on their signs. Last time we went there we both said it didn't taste right. We looked around and noticed the Hummel Brothers ad was covered with a piece of paper for a different hotdog brand. (Unfortunately it was an unfamiliar brand so I do not remember the new one.) It tasted like any old hot dog you get anywhere else. It was still deep fried as it always has been, but it just didn't taste as good. Aside from the major issue of the hotdogs not tasting like they used to, after we were done with our condiments, the lady took the containers that have been sitting out all day (it was almost closing time), and she SCOOPED THE MUSTARD AND RELISH BACK INTO THE BIG CONTAINERS TO BE REUSED!!! I was horrified by this!!!! This HAS to be a major food service issue!!! Those containers sit out all day, probably are refilled throughout the day, and are dumped back into the containers to be reused for tomorrow?!?! That is SO disgusting!!!!! Anyone who knows the condiment containers know that it's an open bowl with a spoon that sit out uncovered at the bar where people eat, talk, cough, sneeze, etc. I know it's already pretty gross that they are out all day uncovered, that's one thing. But to put the mustard and relish back in to be reused for tomorrow is just disgusting. I am very sad to say that I don't think I will be going back. I walk in yesterday and no one is at the counter. I see the cook behind the half wall, but he gives no eye contact and says nothing. I wait about 5 minutes and finally another guy walk out of the kitchen. By now there are about 5 or 6 people that have arrived behind me. So instead of saying who's next he starts helping another group. Ok, ill be next. But no, he goes to another guy and takes his order. I'm outa here. read more

Again, I'm a tourist. My husband is from Wolcott and his dad took us and his younger sister there after hiking Sleeping Giant. I don't like hot dogs. I really really really wanted a corndog and for whatever reason someone suggested it and said they were bomb hot dogs. So fine, I'll go. His dad has also sent us the relish (not a relish girl, never tried it out of a jar either) and my hubs LOVES it. I must say...That is a tasty frankfurter. The place is small and the menu is... uh..there's not one. I have no idea what else you would go there for other than hot dogs. No frills. At all. The guy who rung us up was really nice. I really liked that they have reasonable beverage sizes. So reasonable, you never see a drink that small except on a kids menu...which is ridiculous to me. Another first for me... birch beer. Never even heard of it before. Don't say that in public. Locals will look at you. Its just clear root beer, I don't know. I don't like root beer either. Sorry. But the birch beer wasn't bad. I'm game for anything.I wound up eating 2 and I tried the hot mustard. Awesome. So I committed to try the relish. ITS REALLY SPICY. But good. I get it. I don't know if I'm a buyer-into of the rage behind the relish since I can't really handle things that spicy. But it was pretty good. So this shop made a hot dog girl out of me. I went today because I read all these reviews about "hot relish" and how delicious it is, truth is that there's nothing really special about this place... I do love the way it looks inside - really old time, but the fact that they only have plain cheese burgers (hamburgers) and a hot dogs as if they have some sort of special ingredient is not worth it. I have read on here that the relish is hot.... IT IS NO WHERE NEAR HOT unless your a fool who never had a jalapeño. NO FRENCH FRIES!! so if your into a plain cheese homemade burger then just stay home and make it yourself, your better off. The hotdog itself is good, nothing special as well..that special relish everyone else keeps talking about I'm sure is really simple to make. Ok hot dogs good not great burgers good not great but have best mustard and relish and should get 3 stars old tradition in town is over rated but thats ok. Owner is stuck in 1975 refuses to add credit cards its 2016 most people dont carry cash when asked about it and complain that its cheap to accept cards and most people use them he went on to say we dont need your business if you can pay cash . My grandparents used to live in this area and I spend time walking to Blackies with them to get a hamburger when I was a child. If you are a hot dog and hamburger fan, you will enjoy the food. The restaurant is the same as it was 30+ years ago. It's old fashioned. read more

Blackie's hot dogs are the BEST!!!! They do use Hummel's hot dogs which are the best tasting dogs ever!!! The relish is outstanding and the best part is that you can buy it in a jar and take it home!!! You cannot eat only one and the roll is always so fresh! read more

I really like Yelp and every time I find a place with a 4+ star rating and lots of reviews, I really want to like the place. We finally tried Blackies last night and I'll echo a couple of other reviewers: "I don't get the great reviews". Sure, you can get a cheap meal, but these hot dogs don't seem any different than an Oscar Meyer Wiener boiled in some canola oil. As far as the relish, I can see how some might like it's unique taste, but I sensed some nutmeg and that just didn't go well with a hot dog, in my opinion. read more

New Haven site, hint it's the natural casings Hummel now uses,....you guessed it "China" crap has brought Hummel Bros. and Blackie's down to zero from a number one rating. Blackie's realized the problem with Hummel hot dogs a short time ago and decided to stop serving them after many complaints and possible choking potential. Hummel's actions on making there natural casing hot dogs change has brought down themselves, Blackie's and who knows how many other fine hot dog establishments that once proudly served Hummel dogs and now are frantically searching for a replacement. It's no longer Blackie's as we all have known it since that early day of being founded. As the sign inside Blackie's states when the place burned down years ago "Where will we go for a great hot dog now". read more
