Our service was changed to full pack once my wife broke her wrist. Charged for full pack even though my wife, brother, & sister had already packed around a third of the move. The Packers seemed to do an exceptional job & we had very little damage from what they did with the exception of an Antique German wall clock. The way it was packed caused a long chime rod to be broken off. The loaders seemed to be very careful loading boxes & furniture onto the Truck on the day of the move. I believe the majority of scratches that we found on furniture was caused by the crew that unloaded on this end. We watched from our apartment as pieces of furniture were carelessly handled moving from the truck to our third floor apartment. As an example, I watched one person take our 2 drawer file and move it by himself into our closet. The way he handled it caused the back to be completely broken free from the back frame, and several bad scratches to the top & sides. As far as scratches to furniture the chairs & dinning room table , as well as our Queen size bed frame suffered unnecessary scratches from the way they were handled by the delivery crew. In addition there were scratches & gouges caused on other pieces. The tall boy a chunk taken off, the grandfather clock was dented & scratched, the legs on the leather chair scratched up, smaller scratches on other pieces. The items were delivered to our apartment on 12/12/2025. & nothing has been done other than by me reattaching the back panel on the file cabinet. Originally there was a person assigned to assist with problems, but I was told his mother passed away so he never made it here. He did at first text me that he was at a job in near by Cedar Falls and ask if he could come over. No prior call about setting an appointment, just a text. His mother apparently died shortly after so no contact from him until just recently stating he was off work but now back & he would be open for an appointment in 2 weeks. I responded to him the days I knew I had appointments scheduled coming up. I assumed with that knowledge he would contact me with when he could come. I didn't hear anymore until Jennifer told me that the repair Co. had not been able to contact me. Between hearing Back from Jamel I had received the name & number of another repair person. I called him to set an appointment & he told me that he was given my information but that he did not work for them but had texted Guardsman to get details to see if it was a job he would be interested in. Apparently he wasn't, I didn't hear more from him. Then Jamel came back in the picture. That is the current situation, he has made no attempt to schedule an appointment! Tierney- 244-29096-5 Jennifer has tried to get Guardsman to service our account but they tell her they have a problem communicating with me to set an appointment. My experience with Blackhawk for our long-distance move from Chicago to Roseville, California was 5-star all the way. I'm not sure why their Yelp average is 3.3 stars on only 40 reviews, while Google reviews average 4.5 stars on 142 reviews. I can only do my own honest appraisal, and end with a strong endorsement of this moving company. We recently moved from a 3-bedroom condo in Chicago to a 3-bedroom home in northern California. After a visit to our condo by Blackhawks's estimator, Tony Marinello, we agreed on what seemed to be a fair price for the move. The pricing included packing in Chicago, and special crating by an outside company for several oil paintings. The packing took place on a Friday, and the loading of the van took place the following Monday. The van arrived in California, as promised, one week later. Each of the three crews for this move arrived at the promised time, every crew member was respectful of our possessions, and everything arrived in California in perfect condition. We have only positive things to say about the company and each of its employees. Both the loading of the van in Chicago, and the off-loading of the van in California, were supervised by Terry Cash. In each location Terry had extremely hard-working men who would ask us appropriate questions about the packing and marking of boxes, and about where to place everything at the final destination. Moving is a stressful time, even under the best of circumstances. Long overdue review. Had a cross country move this summer with pick up in Chicago. The team in Chicago was TERRIBLE. Two were new with no moving experience and it showed. None of our furniture was wrapped properly, which resulted in EVERY SINGLE piece of furniture being damaged in some way. No exaggeration, every piece of furniture I own. Either completely destroyed, dinged and a marked up, or west elm couch and head board torn and covered in black gunk. Peleton broken as well, which they already charge you extra for. Jennifer with claims was great and we ended up getting some money back, but would never ever recommend this company if you don't want to risk your stuff being damaged. Even months later I'm noticing damage (for example, the underside of the couch cushions have black filth on them). If you use this company, watch the packing team like a hawk to make sure they're wrapping and storing properly. read more

Was talked into buying "replacement value" insurance. I would have saved money by not purchasing the insurance and replacing the items that they either lost or damaged by myself. If you're missing something, the burden is on you to prove they did not deliver it. You would literally have to stand and video-tape every item going on the truck and again when it came off the truck. read more

SAVE YOUR MONEY AND TIME AND GO WITH SOMEONE ELSE I've moved across the country more times than I can count. And I have never worked with a worse company! Starting with the estimate, after receiving it. I threw out and donated 2 rooms worth of furniture and even then was told at the end of it that my estimate was 500 lbs lesss than what what it should have been. Which after removing 2 rooms of furniture makes 0 sense. When it came to the packers they hired, they literally threw my stuff into boxes until the halfway point and then stuffed the rest with paper, so that they can use more boxes. The movers themselves have broken the glass shelf in my expensive China cabinet. And Blackhawk is now refusing to pay for it or even take the blame even though I paid for extra insurance and the China was in perfect condition when they packed it and it was upon unpacking that I noticed the shattered glass. So logically the issue happened when it was with the movers. I have been trying to settle this issue for months now and they are refusing to work with me. The worst moving company I have ever work with! PLEASE use any other moving company 1) The estimate was completely wrong, Dan came out and completed an estimate that was cheaper than THREE other movers. It stated I could move, 17 boxes, a TV box, and a wardrobe box. NOPE. The moving crew came in and said..."no way is this going to fit, you need to purge some boxes." I spend 3K to move garbage bags. Nice, not to mention the boxes I had to throw out because it "didn't fit" The moving crew laughed at me and said, this happens all the time.. you should never trust the estimates from our office. 2) The logistics associate argued with me for two weeks stating that I needed a permit for the moving van at the destination. I talked to building manager and it was not necessary because the alley was large enough to accommodate the moving van. Blackhawk then sent me three nasty emails stating that I need to go to the sheriff office and get a permit or my delivery will be cancelled. She literally told me, "I don't have google maps on my work computer so this is your problem". Again...why am I paying 3K for this.. In summary....I paid 250.00 for a street permit and I DID NOT need it. 3) Of course my move would not be complete without damage. The Blackhawk moving crew in Chicago ripped my fabric couch. From the other yelp reviews, I assume this will be a loss as well. On the plus side, United Van Lines delivered my goods here and I enjoyed working with them. If you have a choice, go with another moving company. We moved from Chicago to CT a couple months ago with Blackhawk. They were one of the most expensive quotes we got, but hey, we thought, these are one of the best moving companies. They were responsible for both packing and moving our stuff. Both pick up and delivery people were prompt and showed up right on time. The pickup crew were great, they spent about two hours packing and putting all our furniture in the truck. Fast forward 2 weeks when we received our furniture and things did not go as well as we would have liked. Pretty much any wooden furniture that could be broken in anyway was broken. There was a huge dent in the middle of our coffeetable, the library leg was broken, etc etc. But I thought we are covered as I had gotten full insurance for everything. They eventually did pay back the cost of everything they had broken throughout the moving process, BUT, it took a loooooong time (about two months) and hours and hours of our valuable time convincing them that a coffee table does not decide to get a dent with that magnitude just because of weather! We were lucky that we had bought pretty much everything from Amazon, so we had exact receipts for everything. So, in summary, if you have a choice, stay away from them! I gave them two stars instead of one because the pick up crew were great and that they eventually paid us back for the furniture that was damaged! read more

One of our couches was too large for our basement so the guys were able to figure out that our other couch was able to come apart and we moved that one instead. This was the first out of state move that I have done and I hope there are no more in my future. Blackhawk was good to work with, and my rep Bo suggested Mayflower's Container move for the amount of stuff I had. This was a good idea because your furniture, boxes, etc. are moved into containers, then taken and stored (without unpacking containers) until it was ready to be unloaded. I like this much better then to think my furniture would be loaded into a truck, unloaded at a warehouse, loaded again from storage and unloaded at final destination. Too much opportunity for damage and lost items. I also chose to have them to most of the packing - the difference in cost was minimal. Normally with local moves I packed everything myself except the furniture. The packers were on time, but I wish I would have had more people to be my eyes and ears during the packing. I would have liked to have more say on how my clothes and some items were packed. As I am unpacking boxes marked clothes it is annoying to find my clothes dumped into boxes, mixed with shoes and miscellaneous items, just thrown in the boxes. I was told that I could leave linens in the dressers, but the packers said no and they put all into boxes. I had a few standing rolling drawers that were wrapped, but the drawers and items in them were taken out, including losing all the stop pins that held the drawers in place. Unless this is a company policy, the winter scarfs, gloves, vests, etc. could have been left easily in these drawers, now I have to find the articles, and put the drawers back together. Most of the packing is ok but some of it is a huge mess (small articles, clothes,etc.) and I hope I find everything eventually. They were quick but apparently didn't realize that I also had a storage room in the basement that was going too. The movers came the next day and were quick and efficient, but again problems with the storage room, they wouldn't take all of because it wasn't packed properly (obviously not checked when the packers were here) and left behind. Pros: On time, quick and mostly efficient, packers and moving crew. Cons: Miscommunication about the storage room, one packer was a little too friendly - should have paid more attention to how he was packing my clothing not what was being packed, I was paying too much money for his unprofessional mannerisms. I wasn't a close friend, I employed them to do a job and expected my clothing articles to be packed properly not thrown in boxes. When the day arrived for getting my delivery, it was a different crew and they worked quickly and efficiently. Pros: On time, used moving rugs to protect my floors, and overall were a good group. The lead was very professional and watched the crew with an eagle eye. Cons: Stacking boxes too high that I had to get on a ladder to unpack because they were too heavy for me to lift and move to the floor. Heat registers in floors blocked by boxes (no wonder that room was so cold). All in all this out of state move went fairly smooth, no damage of furniture, dishes, etc. My suggestion is make sure you have more than yourself to monitor the packing of your items (if you are having them do the packing). These teams are quick and you need to be on top of what they are doing. It was a bit confusing all the different company names that were involved with this move, I did not know that Mayflower and United were owned by the same company and the other companies were agents for the owners of the trucks. When getting quotes the United rep didn't even bother to show up or call and when I contacted his office - they didn't know where he was. The Mayflower rep was on time and professional, yet they all worked for the same company. All I can say is that moving is extremely stressful and I wish everyone good luck with their move. Would I have movers pack my personal belongings again - no - except for furniture, I would rather know what was being packed, where it was being packed and that the boxes were marked properly. read more

PLEASE DON'T USE THIS COMPANY! Blackhawk decided they could not complete our two stage move only a WEEK before it was scheduled. This is after they had given us an estimate for the two stages and we had signed a contract two months ago. This left us in an incredible bind and forced us to scramble to rent a uhaul and find people to load and unload both here and out of state. They completed the remainder of our move poorly as well. Here are the bullet points: - They required one of us to sit in their truck for the entire (6+ hours) of the unload. - They dropped several boxes out of the back of the truck into the street which broke several items. - They asked my father (who is over 60) to help them unload the truck. - The broke an antique rolltop desk that has been in my family for 3 generations. Overall, they were VERY difficult to work with. They engaged in poor business practices and had very little respect for us or our furniture. Please, don't use them!!! read more

Fort Dearborn Relocation is under the Blackhawk Moving/ Mayflower umbrella. I recently used them to move from Chicago to Las Vegas and I initially went with them as I read many many reviews on all the companies I researched to just pay the extra money and go with Mayflower well I did and was 100% unsatisfied as 70% of my moving boxes were completely crushed, broken, damaged resulting in over $500 worth of damage. My Las Vegas location was not my final destination so my boxes were going to just be in storage for a few months but instead of an easy unload in Vegas I had to spend hours to unpack all boxes, check for damage on my items and then repack into new boxes. The lack of timely communication from the company was a huge inconvenience on their procedure along with overall satisfaction on my end of how they uhandled the final outcome of this matter. I had wasted so much energy and time going back and forth dealing with the result of their carelessness on my personal items. I could have gone with a different company that quoted $1600 to move across country and probably would have been better than the result of Mayflower as it seemed they threw my boxes across country. I moved from Chicago to South Florida and used Blackhawk. Moving can be a nightmare so I was extremely nervous about the move. This company did an excellent job both packing up my entire condo and delivering it a day earlier than promised! Both the moving and delivery crews were prompt, professional and took great care with my belongings. All of my furniture is white, and with the exception of a couple of bumps and bruises, everything came in perfect shape. Stay far far away! I was moving from Manchester, NH to Chicagoland and my first initial contact was great, I was assured I had nothing to worry about. When in fact, they created more stress for my move. First, Blackhawk charged me an outrageous price for my 1 bedroom apartment. They knew my moving allowance because my employer had been working with them for years, so they up-priced me. When I asked why the price was so high they became defensive and very very rude. If that wasn't the bad, less then a week before I was moving they told me they couldn't move me out of my one bedroom apartment until 2 weeks after the date I requested. When I mentioned how horrible my experience with them was, the office manager wrote back and said "Good luck with your relocation"- condescending much? Needless to say, despite having to pay out of pocket initially, I went with another company that is charging me $1100 less than Blackhawk for the same service. This was the most unprofessional group of movers I have ever come across. They came in to pack and broke many things out of my curio cabinet that were fragile and irreplaceable. They over packed stuff by stuffing so much paper in the boxes that there was only one or two small things in a huge boxes to charge more. They made up a box of my expensive electronics and mysteriously that box was lost with more than $3,000 worth of highend equipment. the final and most disgusting thing was the people took off for almost 4 hours - A crew of 4 people and three of them took off to the Elgin casino for 4 hours and left the one by himself that actually did a good job. My wife had to stay an extra 2 days in a motel for them to stay and finish a second day. If they are your movers watch them every second and if you have a choice - hire someone else... My wife and I are moving again and repacked what they had done into less than 100 boxes and it took them 491 at a cost of $6 or more a box. What scam artests read more

They did a good job on my move from Chicago to Philly. They did a very good job handling my items. There is a lack of communication/research in that they didn't know how to get the truck to my home in Chicago and avoid the low viaducts and then in Philadelphia they had not arranged for parking restrictions. After our move was complete we had forgotten a couple of totes in our basement storage area. We called our move coordinator to see if the truck could come back to our apartment. Our moving experience was excellent from start to finish. Our move was from downtown Chicago to the west coast and included two pick up sites. We met with and received three bids for our cross country move. The advisor/sales person, Carl, was professional and personable. The bid from Blackhawk was the most thorough, line by line bid, we received. It was also the best value. all of our questions were answered and in the end everything Blackhawk told us was 100% accurate, no surprises. After we chose them we were immediately contacted by a move coordinator, Deborah who was our point of contact from that point on. We were provided with complete information on next steps, time line, etc. If we had any questions we could call her and she responded immediately. the actual move, pick up and drop off was done on schedule and completed quickly with exceptional care to our items. When we thought we were short a few items at delivery the Blackhawk/United team worked with us to track them down. Within a day, three shelves that were left on the truck were at our front door. There was no damage to any item and they were exceptionally thorough. I would highly recommend Blackhawk to anyone planning a move. read more

Blackhawk was recommended to my by a friend who had a good experience with them in the past. They moved me two months ago. During my move, their employees documented items that were lost, broken and damaged. Now they are refusing to compensate me for the lost and damaged items saying it can't be true. One damaged item was reviewed by their repairman who told me he couldn't fix the item for what I claimed. The company is saying they're sending him out to fix the item. Obviously, my item, a large tv stand, will not be fixed to my satisfaction since the repairman told me he it was impossible. They lied by telling me they only use employees of the company. However the movers and driver told me they are contracted per day, as if their repairman and company that sets up the clocks and tvs. This company is dishonest and unreasonable, they make an already stressful time moving across countries try many times worse. They drag their feet too. It's been two months and I still don't have any resolution. read more

I worked with Blackhawk/United for our move from Chicago to Denver. They were great leading up to the move but when moving day came they were very slow and needed to come back the next day to finish. Onsite in Denver, they broke a few items and dinged up some furniture pretty well. They also packed up an item that was supposed to be left at our rental in Chicago and long-story-short, they said they would get it back to Chicago. It has now been six months and the item still hasn't been returned and the representative I last spoke to basically said they would get it back to the residence, when they could but they can't give us any guarantee on timing. read more

Blackhawk is great to work with. I was kind of skeptical about all the movers I was reading reviews for as they all had a negative reviews and I was moving from chicago to Colorado. They were very competitive in pricing and they communicated well. Their driver and movers worked quickly, were respectful of my belongings and were generally nice people. Got to the other end and we had a pretty big snowstorm and the truck couldn't make it up the street (neither could our car) so the guys rescheduled for the next day. I got hung out to dry by Mayflower Moving Company when they discontinued their container (pod) moving program the day before my move. Andy from Blackhawk stepped in and was incredible - from time spent on the phone and email, to personally handling all of the details to ensure a seamless process. Their SAMS containers are great quality (metal instead of particle board) and worked really well. Their driver Ron is extremely patient and absolutely has your best interest in mind - which is key when trying to find creative locations to drop the container. I had great customer service, great quality product, and the best pricing by far compared to PODs or ABF - I highly recommend them, thank you Andy and Ron for taking so much stress out of my move. read more

I have absolutely nothing but good things to say about Blackhawk and their Mayflower affiliate, Fort Dearborn Relocation. We just moved from near Chicago to Michigan, and they were a real pleasure to work with (I went with United as I had really good experiences with them before). Mark and Sally in the office were very pleasant, highly communicative, and upfront and honest about prices and estimates. Our driver was Ken V., and his loading crew were Larry and Vince. All of them were extremely careful with both our belongings and with the hardwood floors and walls in our old apartment, and they were even willing to help us move old furniture for disposal. They were all really nice guys, too - funny and chatty and full of interesting stories! When they got to Michigan, Ken brought a delivery crew (David and Ron) from Corrigan Moving, and they too were excellent, especially with helping us organize our storage unit. Nothing arrived broken or damaged at all (at least that we've seen). A couple screws had rattled loose from some furniture, but Ken found them in the truck for us. An A+ moving experience - straightforward estimating and pricing, no damage, delivered on time (seriously, to the hour), and very courteous and professional crews. We recently hired United/Blackhawk Moving & Storage to help pack and then move our furniture and furnishings from Naperville, IL to Parrish and Bradenton, FL. The people representing Untited/Blackhawk were outstanding at both origination and destinations. The entire process from the quote to the delivery exceeded our expectations. We have moved long distance many times and this was the best experience of all. The coordination and communication regarding pack, crate, load and unload days and times were outstanding. The crews were all very professional, respectful and hard working. Our driver, Marc Brosovic, was a pleasure to work with and he was a skilled leader and co-worker with his helpers on both ends of the move. We had two additional delivery locations to the primary one and the delivery team was courteous, careful and very professional at each! We did a move from a Chicago suburb to Wyoming. Initially, working with this company was great. I packed things myself and was given lots of help, materials and advice to get things safely packed. The move itself was horrible! Almost every box was mangled in some way, including an extremely well marked box containing a computer monitor that had a hole bashed in it. Only a good packing job saved it. I had many pieces of antique glassware and pottery broken. My antique oak table got its base split in half, a leg was broken off an easy chair, a handle on an exercise bike bent at an angle and an antique roll top secretary was damaged. I became afraid to unpack boxes for fear of what I would find all broken inside. All my boxes were clearly marked with "fragile" and "this end up". My queen size mattress and box springs were supposed to be moved in a special bed box but they were not. My 3 year old bed was just stuffed in with everything else! They did refund the cost of the box,$65.00. This was all VERY stressful. The company did pay for fixing the table, chair, exercise bike, and secretary and paid me for some of the glassware. They did not compensate me for the time it took me to research the value of my damaged items, and do all their required paperwork (which was a nightmare in itself!) and refused to pay me for some of the other destroyed items. The amount they reimbursed me was a tiny fraction of the over all cost of the move. My belongings were poorly packed into the truck and I heard some of them laughing at what I had. The person that was in charge of making things right was very impersonal, it was all done by email, no courtesy phone call. I got the feeling they wanted to settle the matter as quickly as possible and with as little contact with me as possible. The only reason this move got one star instead of no stars was because the packing phase of the move was so well done, I got some money back and the truck driver and his assistant were very good. The guys that loaded the truck were beyond terrible and the claims process was unpleasant. A profuse apology from someone for ruining so many of my things would have been very nice. There were good points and bad points about this company. The good is that they delivered my possessions in less time then they originally quoted. The two gentlemen were very friendly and were very quick in getting things unloaded. The bad points started with the time quoted to pick my belongings - they did call the day before they were suppose to come and made plans to come the next day - this was ok - they showed up when promised. The same when the arrived at our new place. The truck was packed too tightly - they really had to "rock" my furniture to get it out of the truck. This lead to rips on both the leather sofa and love seat. They only put moving blankets around my wood furniture pieces a did not secure most blankets so the blankets moved in handling and left parts unprotected. They ripped off my plastic bags that protected the mattress and box spring. The large TV box that I purchased they carefully took of he TV and then took with them - (to use again and again??) They also added a $25 set up charge for my TV - this was to take the TV out o the box and put it on he stand. After the move I received an loading inventory where comments were entered on every item indicating some sort of "defect" so when I went to file a claim for the damages I couldn't because they noted damage on every item loaded. All I can say is thank goodness I didn't ship anything irreplaceable because they made it impossible for me to file a claim for the repairs of my damaged belongings.
