    Cheesy puff pastry

We came here for a NYE experience. It was so much fun. They had two communal tables (maybe around 40+ guests in total) and had music playing throughout the affair. It started at 7pm and ended around 9pmish? Some of the music was live--with a couple musicians making their rounds playing bagpipes, the recorder, drums. The staff was all dressed up in medieval wear and some of the guests were too! My husband and I were in cocktail party wear: I wore a dress; he wore nice slacks and a button down. But some people were in more formal dresses and coats and ties. We felt perfectly comfortable with what we chose to wear. There were a variety of people there: my husband I are American, sitting across from us was a couple from Newcastle and Leeds, sitting next to them were Australians, sitting next to me was an English family, sitting next to my husband was a German couple. There was plenty of food and most of it was quite good. I especially liked the meat in puff pastry, cooked greens, Lima beans, and cheese plate. If you're wary about sharing food with strangers do not attend this event--they served most dishes per four people and we had to use our own utensils to serve ourselves off of those dishes. Drinks were water, a dark and light ale, and red or white wine. My husband enjoyed the beer and me the white wine, we just wish they came around more often to refill our drinks. The evening ended perfectly with them handing us mulled wine in to-go cups as we trailed out into the cold. If you've never done this before and are looking for something fun, easy and entertaining to get you out of the house for NYE this is a great idea!

The pan fried Scottish salmon with tomato, chorizo, and cannellini bean stew.

Came in for lunch and had a roast basil and tomato soup, a pan fried salmon with a tomato, chorizo, and cannellini bean stew, and a small assortment of homemade sorbets. All this came up to £26 with a glass of white wine. TLDR: great food (but not perfect), great value, great selection of wines and beers, you won't be disappointed. The roast tomato basil soup feels very rustic in style. Smooth, slightly sweet, slightly sour, it a brilliant dish to whet the appetite. I did feel it needed some black pepper to round off the dish and smoothen out the acidity, but other than that it's a great, stomach warming dish. 7/10. The salmon and stew was one of the more 'out there' dishes on the menu and so it caught my eye. The first thing you notice about the dish is the wonderful smell of the perfectly cooked salmon and savoury scent of the chorizo. The next is the colour: the green of the garnish and the pesto drizzle, the lovely char they put on the salmon skin, and of course the wondrous red-orange of the stew. So it looks and smells fantastic, but how do they balance the fine flavour of a salmon with the strong and loud flavours of a stew with tomatoes AND chorizo sausage? Damn near flawlessly. The slight acidity and porkyness of the chorizo lends itself wonderfully to the stew. A dish which, in my mind shouldn't work, does. The use of the cannellini beans fills in the role of more traditional carbs like rice or pastas, and is the perfect choice for the job. The dish isn't perfect however. The spinach used have lovely thick, juicy stems which works against it in this instance. It water-filled stems clashes against the stew, but the leaves alone, lend just enough flavour to further tie the salmon and stew together. The chorizo cubes are extremely tasty, but that works against the salmon and overpowers it. If you can avoid eating a piece of salmon with a piece of chorizo you'll get around this problem though, so it's not too bad, and I honestly can't think of a way to make a chorizo stew without plating any chorizo on the dish without leaving the customer feeling robbed. 7/10. The sorbet flavours were cherry, cucumber/mint, and mango/pineapple. The cucumber/mint sorbet is, as you'd expect, very refreshing. Unfortunately all of them were quite icy, which might sound like an odd thing to complain about when speaking of sorbet, but you shouldn't be biting into small pockets of flavoured crushed ice when eating sorbet. 6/10 Overall a good meal, a more simple or traditional main course would be better as the execution of the dish was perfect, just the idea is a little adventurous, and although well thought out, could use some small refinements.

Peaceful location, as is expected from a former refectory of a 13th Century priory, this informal eaterie offers diners a range of British dishes created with the help of locally acquired produce and the simple ingenuity and craftsmanship of the cooks. Understated dishes using subtle ingredients producing a pleasant dish for all tastes. Diners can escape the Gothic interior (all flickering candles and long tables) for the fresh open spaces offered by the courtyard outside (perfect for summer picnics). Contemporary presentation in relaxed, historic surroundings.

All of the small details shined along with the clearly great sourcing mastermind behind this establishment. I started with the oysters. I was amazed with them their freshness and buttery taste and texture as well as a brilliant horseradish sauce that didn't overpower but rather added to the experience. As a main I had the rib-eye with a peppercorn topping. If there was any negative it only would be to the imagination of the sides which were chips /fries and onion rings with some salad leaves. But do not misunderstand me here the main star was clearly the ribeye. Not only cooked to perfection but the sourcing of the meat was incredible. This is no understatement as I eats steak multiple times a week, always ribeye and most of the time US prime. However this steak was incredible and the peppercorn sauce again did not overpower the steak but rather complimented it. I finished with the cheese plate and a glass of port. The cheese selection was spot on and I exceptionally enjoyed the blue. The chutney was probably the best accompaniment for the cheese selection. Crackers were ok and I could have used a toast but it didn't matter. Service was impeccable, even in a rushed setting it was perfect. All suggestions were spot on, never felt rushed and it always felt friendly. I would highly recommend this restaurant and I would definitely come back and go out of my way to come back.

With our drinks the waiter brought a plastic orange tree with actual berry sized oranges (sultanas) that were soaked in Grand Marnier and other magic potions to make them deliciously alcoholic. Soon after, a sommelier joined us in the drawing room to help us choose a wine for the evening. As you walk into the Orangery dining room, one immediately notices a glass skylight ceiling and views of the immaculately groomed grounds. Especially in the evening, the failing sunlight creates great atmosphere throughout the whole restaurant. Perfect ambiance for a fancy dinner. As with many high end restaurants there were pre-courses and courses. Before starters we had an amazing soup that I don't want to insult by getting it wrong, but reminded me of split pea soup. Then starters, all presented like art, followed by our entree. I had the best end of season lamb, and I definitely recommend it! For me, a place like this is as much about the experience as it is the food so I won't delay on just the food. Believe me, whatever you get is probably going to be amazing here! There was a pre-dessert course and it was like a less solid cheesecake with SPOILER ALERT pop rocks. Yes, pop rocks in a 5 star restaurant. Genius is the first word to come to mind. Hope I don't spoil the surprise for you. I liked that I still had another dessert course to go after I finished that! Service is big with me, and this is one of those places where your napkin is placed in your lap for you, so service was exactly the spoiling treatment you hope for at a place like this. So if you want to really splurge (really splurge) and have a truly fine dining adventure, I highly recommend the Orangery.

The Botanist was an excellent find when we stayed the night in downtown Newcastle. Located on Monument Mall, you have to up three flights of stairs or take the lift (elevator) to reach the main bar and lounge that has a strong botanical garden theme that is quite beautiful, especially with the location being under a dome. The dome is gorgeous and really enhances the botanical garden and atrium effect. The cocktails are very good as well. I ordered a buttered coconut old fashioned that was quite rich and creamy, but very satisfying with the toasted coconut and butter-washed Makers Mark bourbon with homemade salted honey syrup. My wife enjoyed her Botanist Ultimate Gin & Tonic as we took a table with these plushy lounge chairs. The bartender was fantastic and friendly in making us the cocktails. Really nice guy who made us feel at home. Additionally, they have a rooftop balcony to enjoy the drinks; however, on this evening, it was windy and cold (at least for us Floridians) to where we decided to stay warmer inside. Bit of a difficult one to grade this time. Having been here a few years back for a work Christmas…read moredo, had another opportunity to return here for dinner with some colleagues. We specifically chose here due to my previous experience plus other reviews on here and elsewhere. The menu looked promising enough and it has a nice ambience, so we tried to book a table (online) for a specific time but could only get a reservation a little later. Didn't want to eat too late, but not the end of the world, so we thought the place would be busy with other diners... when we got there it was virtually empty. The staff were very friendly indeed, really cannot fault their service at all. However, the food we had can only be best described as average. It went down fine, but there was nothing really memorable about any of our meals. The food that came out was pretty much just what was stated on the menu i.e. a starter of scallops on a bed of chorizo, fried potatoes and salad was literally just that, nothing more. Similar for the mains: beef and ale pie with 'fat chips' turned out to be a pie with a basket of chips on the side that were out of a packet. I know it's being somewhat picky, but you would think a place like this would at least do their chips themselves. Dessert was sticky toffee pudding; as a STP afficionado, I have had a lot better elsewhere. Don't get us wrong, this wasn't a terrible meal by any means, we all just felt that there was something missing from this particular visit, which is why it's only 3* this time around. I will come back again, see if it was just a one-off, but I won't be hurrying back anytime soon. Food aside, I would recommend a trip the bar at the front of the place, had a nice feeling to it and a good range of drinks. Downstairs is a lovely private bar area, so it has potential for sure. Just can't quite put my finger on why it didn't really live up to expectations this time around.
