Well, I traveled a long way to get to Seaham and Bells for their famous fish and chips. We started at one shop which was strictly taken away, went to another shop that was in the center of town and finally made it to the shop that is near where we are staying. As it was mid afternoon, there was no problem with seating or waiting for our food. Delicate flakey cod and the best surprise in way of a green salad! The mixed green salad had fresh slices of strawberries, bell peppers of many colors and pomegranates! Pomegranates!! The chips were plentiful and okay. Being from the US, my preference is for more crispy. Maybe I can ask for this The shop has their own parking lot and the staff is nice. Lovely toilet facilities upstairs. Everything is fab nice cod to big portions but all good stall berry nice and tastes good

Everytime I vist Durham, I always visit Bells for fish and chips. The portion of the sets looks too big for me but surprisingly, its easy to finish. I went there also with my colleagues with a baby. The staff there were very helpful and kind to assist my colleague with her little baby. Sometimes I take out the Fish &Chips to eat it out side, so that I could enjoy eating it out side. This place is my first option to eat British food here in Durham :) read more

Delicious fish and chips. The location shouts of a tourist trap right on Market Square, and the price of the fish and chips perhaps reflects this a little. However the food was great, the cod and chips were some of the best I've had, an I've been eating this food since I was a kid. So for me it was worth the price. Apparently, the fish and chips place in this location used to be called Bimbi. It's now part of the Bells Fish and Chips company, and is located right in the heart of Durham's city center. Bells has table service, so that's one big difference from Bimbi. Plus, the fish and chips were really good, which appears to be another difference. The Wife and I went their the second night we were in Durham. We walked by the place the day before, and there was a young boy in the restaurant who was enjoying his fish and chips so much that he was literally dancing in his chair. That was good enough for us! And we were not disappointed. Being Yanks in the UK for the first time, we had fish and chips on several occasions. And Bells was the best we had in the entire United Kingdom. read more

This is honestly the best chippy I've ever had! The cod is amazingly fresh and the batter is just right and the chips are the best I have ever tasted! I go to Durham a few times a year and I always go to bells. The staff are nice and always friendly, they are always stocked and ready to serve, the only set back is that it's always busy, which does set my review back to 4.5/5 stars, but that shows how good it is and the other customers are always friendly anyway. Overall if you are ever in the area, I highly recommend coming to bells, you will definitely not regret it! read more

Have been poping in here about once per week for the past several months, as I am in town for work. So far, the best place I have been too for Fish and Chips. Always fresh and hot. Every time I walk in they let me know it will be 3 to 4 minutes to get my fish. They always pack in a box for take way and offer vingar and salt that I can put on right as it comes from the fryer. Also, note that they do fry in beef fat (the traditional method). read more

Fresh, crispy and golden. The perfect fish shop trio - both the fish and the chips I devoured at Bells ticked the mandatory boxes. Service is quick and un fussy with the option to eat in or take your steaming box (complete with small wooden spiking fork) out into the market place and dine al fresco. Classic fish (cod, haddock & Plaice were all available on my visit) and chips will set you back about £7/£8 - well worth parting with your pennies for. Went for lunch on a Saturday with a couple of friends and got a table in the cozy upstairs dining room overlooking Saddler Street (there's a takeaway area next door). I ordered the haddock and chips, with a pint of Durham Brewery. The haddock was excellent and a huge portion -- fresh and not greasy at all -- and with a crispy coating. The chips were tasty -- potato-y in taste as they should be -- and not greasy either; the portion was too much to finish. Overall, an excellent pick. We lucked out in that we were seated immediately; when we left, there was a line out the door. read more

Visiting Durham for the first time, on business. Ate lunch here with colleagues. Literally the best fish and chips I've ever had, by a long mile. Prices were a little high but the portion was huge. My haddock and chips was a full filet of fish, about 10 inches long, on a bed of fries. The fish was very moist, obviously fresh, and battered to just the right extent. The steak fries were also cooked well, crispy on the outside. They were quite busy at lunch and service was a little slow but it was well worth the wait. read more
