Pork pie (served cold) but delish
    Hana C.

My husband and I are American and came to England wanting to try traditional English fare. We wanted so many things on their menu but settled on the pork pie (served cold), chicory salad, haggis on toast, black pudding, and for dessert Christmas pudding (served warm). Everything was flavorful and phenomenal. We each had two beers and were quite full but thoroughly satiated. My favorites were the haggis (never heard of HP sauce but theirs is delicious and a perfectly fried egg--truly hard to come by) and the black pudding: the pudding was superb but everything with it made this dish perfect--the gherkins, mashed potatoes, and cabbage. Service was quick with getting us refills on our drinks, which I greatly appreciated. We came on a Friday night around 8pm and got seated immediately. My only regret was not having enough time in Newcastle to try more of their menu! Dress is casual. My husband and I felt this was the best meal we had in England.

Absolutely cracking pub! Really chilled out place to have a drink just off the beaten track of the quayside. It's definitely got a casual feel to it and you won't find overpowering music here...just the sound of people chatting and drinking as it should be in a traditional pub. Simple yet divine British pub food and more often than not you need to book a table to avoid disappointment. Sunday lunch is a particular treat I would recommend!

Super chuffed to find one of my favourite ciders on tap.

This is one of my favourite pubs in Newcastle. It serves a great selection of beers and ciders as well as some awesome bar snacks (please try their hot scotch eggs, they're amazing! ). Their Sunday lunches are lovely too, and it's all very reasonably priced. Set back a short distance from the river side, this is the perfect spot for a relaxed afternoon drink and a spot of lunch after having visited the Quayside market on a Sunday.

This is a PROPER pub with better than PROPER food! It's amazing. Thanks to Yelpers who rated this highly we were able to find it. AND it's in the Michelin guide as we found out when we got there. No wonder it was fully booked for Sunday lunch, until 5pm there were going to be no tables. The waitress told us this with such regret for us so we though it was going to be the end of it until she said we could sit in the bar and order off the bar menu or a choice of the Sunday roasts! Boy were we glad we were there at 12pm because the bar on the ground floor was filled 15 minutes after we sat down! The bar menu had oysters, Atlantic prawns, pork scratchings, etc. We ordered two of each of the lamb and beef Sunday roasts - they both came with the exact sides including Yorkshire puddings for the lamb shoulder. The food came out promptly and were piping hot. The beef looked lovely and pink and the lamb was so tender it fell apart with a prod from the fork. The sides were carrot and swede mash, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, savoy cabbage and something none of us had before - peas and barley served with fresh mint! It was DELICIOUS! The whole thing, every bit of it. We were quite hungry and so we also ordered the pork scratchings and cauliflower fritters which was served with a curried mayonnaise. It was nice and crispy with tender caulifower inside and the mayo packed enough flavour to make it memorable. So, if you're planning on going to Newcastle, come to this beautiful pub! Make a booking though!

Came here last Christmas for a drink a some bar snacks. Managed to get back for Sunday lunch today and wow it was worth the wait. Booked a table for Sunday lunch weeks ago. Was ready and waiting. Went for the daily special of Roast Beef and all the trimmings (excellent value at £12.50). It was scrummy. Service was good and attentive. Would recommend to anyone - although you need to book!

With our drinks the waiter brought a plastic orange tree with actual berry sized oranges (sultanas) that were soaked in Grand Marnier and other magic potions to make them deliciously alcoholic. Soon after, a sommelier joined us in the drawing room to help us choose a wine for the evening. As you walk into the Orangery dining room, one immediately notices a glass skylight ceiling and views of the immaculately groomed grounds. Especially in the evening, the failing sunlight creates great atmosphere throughout the whole restaurant. Perfect ambiance for a fancy dinner. As with many high end restaurants there were pre-courses and courses. Before starters we had an amazing soup that I don't want to insult by getting it wrong, but reminded me of split pea soup. Then starters, all presented like art, followed by our entree. I had the best end of season lamb, and I definitely recommend it! For me, a place like this is as much about the experience as it is the food so I won't delay on just the food. Believe me, whatever you get is probably going to be amazing here! There was a pre-dessert course and it was like a less solid cheesecake with SPOILER ALERT pop rocks. Yes, pop rocks in a 5 star restaurant. Genius is the first word to come to mind. Hope I don't spoil the surprise for you. I liked that I still had another dessert course to go after I finished that! Service is big with me, and this is one of those places where your napkin is placed in your lap for you, so service was exactly the spoiling treatment you hope for at a place like this. So if you want to really splurge (really splurge) and have a truly fine dining adventure, I highly recommend the Orangery.

The Botanist was an excellent find when we stayed the night in downtown Newcastle. Located on Monument Mall, you have to up three flights of stairs or take the lift (elevator) to reach the main bar and lounge that has a strong botanical garden theme that is quite beautiful, especially with the location being under a dome. The dome is gorgeous and really enhances the botanical garden and atrium effect. The cocktails are very good as well. I ordered a buttered coconut old fashioned that was quite rich and creamy, but very satisfying with the toasted coconut and butter-washed Makers Mark bourbon with homemade salted honey syrup. My wife enjoyed her Botanist Ultimate Gin & Tonic as we took a table with these plushy lounge chairs. The bartender was fantastic and friendly in making us the cocktails. Really nice guy who made us feel at home. Additionally, they have a rooftop balcony to enjoy the drinks; however, on this evening, it was windy and cold (at least for us Floridians) to where we decided to stay warmer inside. But we would return in a heartbeat.

The Wellington was perfectly prepared, tender, with excellent ingredients while the black pudding was flavourful and crispy outside with tender inside. We specifically chose here due to my previous experience plus other reviews on here and elsewhere. The menu looked promising enough and it has a nice ambience, so we tried to book a table (online) for a specific time but could only get a reservation a little later. Didn't want to eat too late, but not the end of the world, so we thought the place would be busy with other diners... when we got there it was virtually empty. The staff were very friendly indeed, really cannot fault their service at all. However, the food we had can only be best described as average. It went down fine, but there was nothing really memorable about any of our meals. The food that came out was pretty much just what was stated on the menu i.e. a starter of scallops on a bed of chorizo, fried potatoes and salad was literally just that, nothing more. Similar for the mains: beef and ale pie with 'fat chips' turned out to be a pie with a basket of chips on the side that were out of a packet. I know it's being somewhat picky, but you would think a place like this would at least do their chips themselves. Dessert was sticky toffee pudding; as a STP afficionado, I have had a lot better elsewhere. Don't get us wrong, this wasn't a terrible meal by any means, we all just felt that there was something missing from this particular visit, which is why it's only 3* this time around. I will come back again, see if it was just a one-off, but I won't be hurrying back anytime soon. Food aside, I would recommend a trip the bar at the front of the place, had a nice feeling to it and a good range of drinks. Downstairs is a lovely private bar area, so it has potential for sure. Just can't quite put my finger on why it didn't really live up to expectations this time around.
