A previous review has the layout & decor spot on: Great big, overstuffed armchairs scattered around the lounge- and keep your eyes up - the ceiling is decorated with everything including an old rowing boat!
I've been here a few times now and the restaurant is very good although, in contrast to other reviews I've read, portions aren't very large in my experience.
Price wise it's at the high end of what you'd pay for a pub/restaurant but the quality of the food really is worth it.
The food seems to be cooked from scratch with fresh ingredients daily rather than the usual heated-from-frozen fare at places like this, and you can see the chef working in the open kitchen at the end of the restaurant.
This occasion was a special one for us, so we'd saved ourselves all day and opted for 3 courses. We both started with the chicken & leek soup which was beautiful, just the right balance of meaty chicken pieces and the leek wasn't too overpowering. Later we heard the soup described as "chicken & asparagus" by a waitress but ours definitely had leek. It came in a large bowl which was quite shallow with a large bread bun each and plenty of real butter.
Mains were Thai Green Chicken Curry with fragrant rice which my partner said was exquisite, plenty of big meaty pieces of chicken and a spicy but not over hot sauce and a tower of rice at the side.
I had the Monkfish, King Prawns and Mussels in a rich creamy sauce which was absolutely delicious but very slightly overcooked making it a bit tougher than it should have been, again with a small portion size.
In defence of the Vic they did offer yet more bread to soak up the delicious sauce but 3 pieces each of the main ingredients isn't enough, and some rice on the side would go a long way to making this dish superb.
There was quite a wait at this point, we had to wait nearly half an hour to have the plates cleared and order desserts.
Well worth the wait though, puds when they arrived were absolutely delicious. My partner had Apple Pie and ice cream which were both a cut above average and very tasty.
I opted for "Chocolate Overdose", again with ice cream, which was absolutely beautiful and bursting with real chocolate flavour.
If they solved the portion size issue and slight overbooking of the seafood this rating would be 5star without a doubt. read more
