As a main I had the rib-eye with a peppercorn topping. If there was any negative it only would be to the imagination of the sides which were chips /fries and onion rings with some salad leaves. But do not misunderstand me here the main star was clearly the ribeye. Not only cooked to perfection but the sourcing of the meat was incredible. This is no understatement as I eats steak multiple times a week, always ribeye and most of the time US prime. However this steak was incredible and the peppercorn sauce again did not overpower the steak but rather complimented it. I finished with the cheese plate and a glass of port. The cheese selection was spot on and I exceptionally enjoyed the blue. The chutney was probably the best accompaniment for the cheese selection. Crackers were ok and I could have used a toast but it didn't matter. Service was impeccable, even in a rushed setting it was perfect. All suggestions were spot on, never felt rushed and it always felt friendly. I would highly recommend this restaurant and I would definitely come back and go out of my way to come back.

The Botanist was an excellent find when we stayed the night in downtown Newcastle. Located on Monument Mall, you have to up three flights of stairs or take the lift (elevator) to reach the main bar and lounge that has a strong botanical garden theme that is quite beautiful, especially with the location being under a dome. The dome is gorgeous and really enhances the botanical garden and atrium effect. The cocktails are very good as well. I ordered a buttered coconut old fashioned that was quite rich and creamy, but very satisfying with the toasted coconut and butter-washed Makers Mark bourbon with homemade salted honey syrup. My wife enjoyed her Botanist Ultimate Gin & Tonic as we took a table with these plushy lounge chairs. The bartender was fantastic and friendly in making us the cocktails. Really nice guy who made us feel at home. Additionally, they have a rooftop balcony to enjoy the drinks; however, on this evening, it was windy and cold (at least for us Floridians) to where we decided to stay warmer inside. But we would return in a heartbeat.

Our server was confused by my wine bottle order and I had to correct her. Then she mixed up one of the wine pairings for one of our dinner companions, who opten for the pairing for each item on the tasting menu. And at some point throughout the evening, they just stopped collection our empty glasses so our table got cluttered. I still had a good experience overall, and I enjoyed my meal other than the dessert, but I would've expected a bit better service for a place of this caliber.

The restaurant is at the top of the building with windows from all directions. Even the restroom (the sink area, not the actual WC) had a nice view of the river/city. 2) The food was so elegant and presented as art - yet everything was very tasty. I enjoyed everything and the quantity and quality was perfect for my three course meal. and 3) Service was prompt and refilled our glasses often. The staff are very friendly and accommodating where able but it does get busy as it is a popular venue so there can be a wait for your order. There is outdoor seating available if the weather permits which is great for people watching and soaking in the city centre atmosphere. A definite must for coffee and cake!

The prices are a bit high and the menu isn't very creative though it is well-thought out with lots of variety and several Asian-inspired dishes. Points for seasonal ingredients meaning that the menu changes often. (Which is handy as I had a glance at it right now and it looks better than last month). I wouldn't be opposed to giving it a second visit. Perhaps next time with my parents as it gives you that clean-cut 'bring your parents here' feel. If I come again I will give the scrumptious looking pastries a go!

My starter was home -made fried black pudding and my main course was outstanding Beef Wellington (both 5 stars). The Wellington was perfectly prepared, tender, with excellent ingredients while the black pudding was flavourful and crispy outside with tender inside. Everything else was excellent but I can't remember all of the details because I forgot to take pictures of the menu and other dishes. We all received complementary house-brewed ale. Service was outstanding, friendly and attentive.

In general, I find vegans and vegan establishments really nice, down-to-earth, and always good to their patrons. Probably because us vegans/ vegetarians are a rare breed and we feel the need to look after one another. Scrumpy feels differently though, to be fair, they're not entirely vegan, but from what I have been told, they are the "vegan" place to eat in town. I would never come back here again. They give vegans/ vegetarians a bad name. Also, my hard earned cash should not be spent on establishments that don't appreciate my business and are super rude to me. Last time I was here I opted for the panini but this time I gave one of their jacket potatoes a go. Deciding to go for a topping of tuna and cheese I was asked if I wanted the cheese on before or after (nice touch), if I wanted the side salad (lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers) and also the addition of a slaw when asked. Made with purple cabbage it was a tasty touch. Paying 3.80 it was a steal when I saw the sheer amount of food I got for my money! I didn't eat for the rest of the day! Why didn't I give it 5* - no option for baked beans?! Definitely a staple for any jacket potato....

The team behind the counter are very smiley and friendly, and Duncan, Kevin and Sophie will quickly recognise you when you go back, and welcome you like old friends, unlike the miserable pond life at Subway!
