I made the trip to Blackbird Bakery to see what they were offering for, Javapaloza. Javapaloza was a celebration in SW IL, that celebrated small local coffee shops. So it was a great and fun way to celebrate local. I enjoyed an iced version of their special Javapaloza drink. It was a Salted Caramel Macadamia Nut Latte. As a treat, I had Avocado Toast. I loved that they whip the avocado and just don't slice it and put it on a piece of toast. My latte and toast made for a perfect light breakfast. Of course, before I left I had to buy a container of Chicken Salad. Typically I don't like grapes in my chicken salad, but theirs is an exception. The red grapes and the seasoning, makes it a real treat. I also had to grab, an Apple Fritter and Blueberry Muffin. They were my breakfast for the next two days. Blackbird is a Staunton gem. I've been here a few times for breakfast and it is consistently incredible. The B&Gs are phenomenal and my favorite in the metro area. Each weekend they feature a few different pastries in addition to the regular lineup. Everything I've tried is sofa king good. The morning buns are my favorite. The staff is also so friendly and the people around you will be smiling too (probably the aforementioned pastries). There's a sweet new mural and garden area adjacent to the building now too. Have been wanting to visit for awhile and finally made the drive last week. It was worth the drive and I will be back. We had breakfast, hubby had traditional and I had croissant breakfast sandwich, both were delish and made with care. Everything I purchased from the bakery I could tell was made from good quality ingredients.... But the loaf of bread was simply outstanding. Found myself for the next few days having bread and butter it was just so good. Toasted up beautifully as well. Highly recommend a visit here... next time we will go a bit later in the day and try their lunch. All workers were pleasant and helpful. Clean restroom. read more

Had to stop in Staunton for an appointment, had some spare time and decided to search for a bakery not expecting anything good since it's such a small town. I was well surprised, and shocked when I came across blackbird bakery. Quality food you'd get in big cities or even better. The croissants were actually crunchy and had all the delicious buttery layers! I've had croissants in France, and Blackbird's croissants are just as good. Such a gem of a bakery, service was prompt and friendly. Although not close to me at all it is well worth the drive. Would definitely recommend to anyone, don't hesitate to go out of your way and give them a try! read more

Very chill vibe if that's what you're after. More than that, they have excellent coffee and baked goods. The Lemon Turnover was a crowd favorite and the German 5 grain bread was scrumptious. The Bear claw was subtle not cloyingly sweet. read more

The downside is traveling is pretty soon all your favorite restaurants will be hundreds of miles from where you live. I've never met a satisfying cheesesteak outside of eastern Pennsylvania, my favorite burger joint is in Mississippi, and now my favorite French style cafe is in Illinois. I arrived after biking about 20 miles from Edwardsville, and got the TCB sandwich - turkey, cheddar, and bacon with lettuce, onion, tomato, and herbed mayo, and upgrade the side from fries to a salad for $2. You get to choose which of three salads you want; I went with the Solstice - lettuce, goat cheese, pecans, seasonal fruit (strawberries today) and poppyseed dressing. The vegetables, for that matter all the ingredients, are top quality, and both the sandwich and (side!) salad are large serving sizes. Despite my taste buds' protestations, I seriously considered taking half of the sandwich to go, which never happens after that long of a ride, but my bike bag needed space for a pastry to go. Although some offerings (including the apple fritter) had sold out by 1 PM, there were still around ten options. I went with the pain au chocolat, which was flaky in just the right way like they are in France. It can be hard to find that in the U.S. I live in a metro area of about two million, and while there's probably a place that does French pastries right, the only one I knew of isn't around anymore. The only real opportunity for improvement would be having a French cafe atmosphere, with wrought-iron furniture out front on a patio and so forth, but that isn't realistic in the current building. If it we're, I'd probably have to drop everything and move to Staunton. As is, I'll hope that the steady lunchtime business continues or increases, and visit again the next time I'm in southern Illinois. If you live nearby and haven't visited yet, make sure you do soon! read more

Wonderfully unexpected locally owned bakery at its finest! Pastries are out of this world & coffee & espresso are kept local which in a small town is a wonderful nod. Saturdays are the best because they serve their quickly becoming famous quiche with a side of fresh fruit but come early because once it's gone it's gone & it goes quickly. A small town treasure! A group of 10 of us went here for lunch. You order and pay at the counter and they bring it to your table. The food was delicious and huge portions! One of the workers gave us some samples of the lemon polenta cookies. They were delicious too. I had the 1/2 & 1/2, a salad and a California club. Highly recommend! read more
