    Light coming in (at night)

We have had two experiences staying at Blackbeard's Lodge and two totally different results. Last year was a good enough experience to come back this year, obviously. This year? We won't be back. When we made our hotel reservation, we also reserved a golf cart which we thought would be very convenient. We could have reserved with any number of other outlets, but we chose Blackbeard's for convenience. However, when we arrived it had been raining, as it often does in Ocracoke and there were puddles. When we checked in, we had to wait for several minutes for the clerk to arrive. We tried calling the number left at the front desk, but it went to voice mail. Finally after several minutes the clerk arrives, makes no apology for being absent and starts the check in process. We asked to confirm the reservation for a golf cart and the clerk responds with, - rudely - "that isn't happening". No apology, nothing. We asked about the possibility that we could could rent one tomorrow and were given an indifferent response that if maybe the puddles ran off we might be able to. The following day we asked again and the same clerk pointed outside and shook her head. So, we walked up the street to Wheelies, where they gladly rented us a cart. A few hours later, we parked the cart where a different Blackbeard clerk was showing a woman how to use the golf cart they just rented to her! Obviously, they had a problem renting a cart to us, but not someone else. Of course, the room had its issues too. Once it got dark, we noticed a significant amount of light coming into the bathroom from the corner and from every piece of plumbing (pics included). I looked for a camera and didn't see anything, but clearly there was something unusual going on with that bathroom. Rude and unfair treatment, substandard room - no, we will never be back and we recommend you look elsewhere too.

We ended up at Captain's Landing more or less by accident (at the last minute we decided to take…read morethe Cedar Island-Ocracoke ferry instead of driving via Manteo to Hatteras Island, and this was the only hotel we found with room -- most hotels on Ocracoke close in winter, and one that was open, Pony Island, didn't answer its phone or return our calls.) A helpful person at NC Ferries gave us the tip on Captain's Landings. We're so glad we did! We got the next to last room available at this inn, and probably on the island, a one-bedroom, one and a half bath suite for just $110. Rates in summer rise to $280, but there's a discount for weekly stays, and I would guess that this place stays fully booked much of the time. The inn, painted a light yellow and patterned after another, long-gone hotel on the island, the Ponzer Hotel, is owned by a ninth generation Ocracoker, Betty Chamberlin, and her husband. It is perched right on Silver Lake (the Ocracoke harbor) in the heart of the village, within walking or biking distance to just about everything, including one of the best and most pristine stretches of Hatteras National Seashore beach on the entire Outer Banks. In a Frommer's guidebook I wrote to the coast of the Carolinas and Georgia years ago, I rated this 14 miles of Ocracoke beach the best beach in the three states. In my view, it still is. You're also just a short bike or hike away from the lighthouse and the shops and restaurants in and around the village. Although they are closed in winter, you'll probably find as most do that the Flying Melon and the Back Porch are the two top restaurants on the island, and that Howard's Pub is a great watering hole. On this visit, we ate at Jason's for dinner -- it has good, fresh seafood and probably the best pizza anywhere around. The views across the harbor, including the Ocracoke Lighthouse, are wonderful. Our first-floor suite had everything we needed -- fully equipped kitchen, a balcony overlooking the inn's 10 boat slips and the water, a pleasant living room with a large flat screen TV with DirecTV and DVD player, and a comfortable bedroom with a quality queen bed. There's free Wi-Fi. The manager is very friendly and helpful, and she gave us good advice on the three restaurants that are open for dinner this time of year. We've visited Ocracoke many times during annual stays at Avon or Rodanthe on Hatteras Island, but I have only stayed overnight on the island only a couple of times. This visit, in late February, we lucked out on the weather. It can be surprisingly cold on the OBX in winter, but this time it was sunny and around 70 degrees in the day, perfect springlike weather. Ocracoke is one of the jewels of the North Carolina coast, and in our book Captain's Landing is the top place to stay on Ocracoke.

THE GOOD: I am giving a 1 star review for the amazing view from our balcony, that is it!…read more THE BAD: The room smelled like bleach, like pool bleach, IN JANUARY?? Like if someone mixed the wrong chemicals when cleaning. The microwave was broken. It being January not much is open, so we were going to heat up dinner & breakfast in our room. We called the number provided but no one ever called us back. We would have changed rooms last night!! I woke up with a migraine!! I ran the bathroom fan on trying to get rid of that smell to no avail. UGH! This may have been a 1 off room, I didn't see anyone else complaining of their room issues outside. We won't be back. What would I do differently? I did everything I was supposed to do. 1) I told the front desk there was a "chlorine like pool smell in our room." I smelled it the minute we walked in. They said "It's coming in from outside and blowing down the pipe, it should clear up." IT DID NOT *** 2) The microwave was broken, I called the number on the paperwork they gave us. It went to VM. I left a message, no one ever called me back! 3) I woke up 2 hours after going to bed with a migraine and I was having trouble breathing. I went out on the balcony for fresh air. It was so cold out but at least I could breathe. My head was pounding!! I went down to my car in the parking lot and sat there for a while. I finally went back upstairs & got my husband, who wasn't bothered at all by whatever this was. I told the lady at the desk about what is going on, it wasn't the same lady so she had no idea what was going on. I went back to my room & changed & left. As we were getting ready to leave I noticed that the cleaning lady was using Clorox. I told her the room smells very strongly of bleach. She said "some people don't like the bleach because it smells strong so I mix it with Fabuloso." I quickly realized what the smell was & looked up what mixing Clorox & Fabuloso would do. It creates a gas! I went down stairs and told the front desk about it. She said she'd give us a discount. Thanks for torturing me, can you pay me now? WE WON'T BE BACK!!! BTW, my husband has been a P-1 Master plumber for 35 years and NEVER heard of BLEACH smell down 'a pipe' before. These folks are crazy!

That's about the nicest things I could say about staying here aside from the sunset view which was pretty good. The bad....the wifi didn't work at all. They give you a sheet with instructions on how to login to the wifi, choose "north or south access point based on room number and floor number..." I included a screenshot, they only have "Anchorage Inn Guest" as an option. If you click it, it asks for a password. The sheet says to enter your username as the room number and then the password anchorage all lower case...well, the sign in screen doesn't ask for a username and says that password is wrong. The TV doesn't have cable but depends on wifi...guess what...it wasn't connected to the "TV Network" either. And it couldn't be connected to the guest network because nothing can connect to it. This was a bit of a problem for me as I fall asleep to TV every night and I couldn't use this TV at all. I called the office. No answer, a voicemail directed me to call a night time number. I called it. The guy there was pretty useless...he had no idea how to connect to the wifi or the password or anything and just told me to talk to the lady at the front desk in the morning. There are no grounded outlets in the room either so if you have anything that needs to plug-in to a three pronged outlet you're out of luck. No USB ports, no room phones...super basic. It did have a fridge. The AC would cool the room to 68 during these mild temps but I'm not so sure it would work in high temps, especially with the fact that you could see light all the way around the door reveal...absolutely no insulation (photo included). This allowed a ton of noise to intrude into the room all night so we didn't get the best sleep. It seems that pre-covid they used to offer some type of continental breakfast. I tried looking on their page and couldn't find out if they still offered it or not, they don't. I get that a lot of places cut costs here, but at least offer coffee, water, and some healthy food options such as apples or bananas. There's only 3 places that open by 7am for breakfast if you have an early ferry ride to catch. The parking lot was all gravel and sand too. Elevator is super slow especially if it's crowded. There are plenty of nearby restaurants within walking distance for dinner. There is a British Cemetery nearby where the land is perpetually leased to England so their soldiers who died fighting for the US can be buried in England. Some nice shops and and ice cream shop down the way as well.

Now let's see what happened to the other 3 stars. I got a call from Silver Lake just before boarding the ferry from Cedar Island. Nice enough lady, telling me that the office will close at 5pm, and that my room key will be in the late arrival box. Late arrival? Huh? Most travelers don't even roll into town until 5. Okay I thought, my adventure will extend beyond the ferry ride. I did arrive late. I got there at 6:30. Sheez, late at 6:30, in what world is 6:30 late. Well, in Island world 6:30 is late. Laid-back, I'll get to it....eventually. Sure enough, as the lady told me, my key was in the box, the "Late arrival box". LoL. I found the room charming, in a 1930s kind of way. Wood everywhere, floors, wall paneling, shutters, furniture, you know, homey, IF YOU'RE A LUMBERJACK! I attempted to log on to the WiFi, but no matter how many times I tried, numerous number variations, upper case, lower case, it just wasn't happening. I know, I'll go to the office for help. Oh, that's right the office is closed. I was a 6:30 late check in. So, no Internet. Maybe I'll watch a few minutes of TV before dinner. I pop it on, fuzzy channels. It's probably a bad cable connection I thought, so I checked the cable. It wasn't hard to get to, it was coming out of the wall, at eye level, above the T V, right next to the plug. Curious place for an electrical outlet, but I guess that's the way it was back in the 30s. I managed to get some fairly decent reception. The show I turned on was Bar Rescue. Bad timing for The Silver Lake Motel. The Rescue guy was pointing out everything that was wrong, and most applied to what I was experiencing. Bottom line, lack of pride in ownership. My advice, stay away from Silver Lake. If enough do, maybe it'll close down before it reaches its 100th anniversary. Quick Tip: If you're a glutton for punishment, then book a stay at Silver Lake. But if you want to avoid being a late arrival, I suggest getting there before sunrise.
