We ended up at Captain's Landing more or less by accident (at the last minute we decided to take the Cedar Island-Ocracoke ferry instead of driving via Manteo to Hatteras Island, and this was the only hotel we found with room -- most hotels on Ocracoke close in winter, and one that was open, Pony Island, didn't answer its phone or return our calls.) A helpful person at NC Ferries gave us the tip on Captain's Landings. We're so glad we did! We got the next to last room available at this inn, and probably on the island, a one-bedroom, one and a half bath suite for just $110. Rates in summer rise to $280, but there's a discount for weekly stays, and I would guess that this place stays fully booked much of the time. The inn, painted a light yellow and patterned after another, long-gone hotel on the island, the Ponzer Hotel, is owned by a ninth generation Ocracoker, Betty Chamberlin, and her husband. It is perched right on Silver Lake (the Ocracoke harbor) in the heart of the village, within walking or biking distance to just about everything, including one of the best and most pristine stretches of Hatteras National Seashore beach on the entire Outer Banks. In a Frommer's guidebook I wrote to the coast of the Carolinas and Georgia years ago, I rated this 14 miles of Ocracoke beach the best beach in the three states. In my view, it still is. You're also just a short bike or hike away from the lighthouse and the shops and restaurants in and around the village. Although they are closed in winter, you'll probably find as most do that the Flying Melon and the Back Porch are the two top restaurants on the island, and that Howard's Pub is a great watering hole. On this visit, we ate at Jason's for dinner -- it has good, fresh seafood and probably the best pizza anywhere around. The views across the harbor, including the Ocracoke Lighthouse, are wonderful. Our first-floor suite had everything we needed -- fully equipped kitchen, a balcony overlooking the inn's 10 boat slips and the water, a pleasant living room with a large flat screen TV with DirecTV and DVD player, and a comfortable bedroom with a quality queen bed. There's free Wi-Fi. The manager is very friendly and helpful, and she gave us good advice on the three restaurants that are open for dinner this time of year. We've visited Ocracoke many times during annual stays at Avon or Rodanthe on Hatteras Island, but I have only stayed overnight on the island only a couple of times. This visit, in late February, we lucked out on the weather. It can be surprisingly cold on the OBX in winter, but this time it was sunny and around 70 degrees in the day, perfect springlike weather. However you choose to get to Ocracoke, you will have seen a great many achingly beautiful sights on your way, whether it's coming from the mainland and watching the tiny island materialize in the distance, or on that increasingly exciting trip down 12 from the ferry station on the north end of the island, as you cross over the inlets and creeks, and make your way through a maritime forest. Whatever your approach, with its cheerful palm trees (and sparkly lights at night), Captain's Landing is a welcome sight at the end of a long journey. You'll stop by the office, have a lovely chat with whomever's there, and, as on almost all of our visits, it's likely Captain George will escort you to your room to point out a few of the amenities, and to explain how the satellite TV works. His is a gentle, kind welcome. He'll unlock your door and take you inside, and you'll see a view out your sliding doors that ought to take your breath away. We've done this drill many, many times, and each time, that image of the active calm of the harbor leaves us transfixed. Still, try to pay attention to George (or his alternate - the ladies are exceptionally nice and hospitable, as well)- the welcoming informational spiel is very helpful. We always haul the stuff up to our suite (we prefer the second floor, though the views on the first are nothing to sneeze at, and they come without the schlep upstairs), then head over to Dajio, a great little coastal restaurant across the street, for Doug's crab cakes and a glass of something crisp and nice. Properly sated, we head back to our room, the sun is usually setting, some live tunes are wafting from the Jolly Roger next door (you will likely hear "Sweet Home Alabama" at least twice each night, and should you fancy yourself not inclined to sing along, I can guarantee, by the end of the week, you will sing, and you'll do it with feeling). If it's a clear night, the sun will set in a magnificent way, and for a brief moment, you will think yourself the smartest person alive for bringing yourself to this place. A week's stay will do nothing to discourage this conclusion. We've stayed in both the cottage and on both floors of the hotel (never the penthouse, which is another flight of stairs but looks smashing). There is a solid feel to the place, and though the accommodations aren't the most ostentatious out there, they are perfectly suited to the Ocracoke vibe. If you want for more, you probably shouldn't have come to the 'Coke in the first place. There's a delightful kitchenette in the suites, and a full, open kitchen in the cottage. Mattresses are firm but forgiving, your sheets will be changed (if you like) every other day. You may change out the bathroom towels with whatever frequency you desire. Housekeeping is unobtrusive and will tidy up, make the bed, load and run (or unload) the dishwasher. If there are any maintenance issues, they will be swiftly dispatched. George and Betty, the dear and charming owners, have a large cache of DVDs in the rental office (on a rainy night, or post-sunset, I recommend Roman Holiday), running a gamut of genres. I don't quite recall the policy about the hotel-owned bicycles, but they're convenient, in any case. They also have golf carts to rent. You might like the bikes for a trip to Springer's Point, which is a must see bit of perfectly-preserved coastland and which doesn't have any parking. Just about everything you could want (that's offered on the island) is an easy walk away, from excellent dining to groceries, late night ice cream from the Slushy Stand to a tasty bottle from Zillie's Island Pantry. You will spend a lot of time on the deck. We especially like the decks for the suites, which are covered, and if you're fair of complexion, it is possible (with some savvy chair-shifting) to enjoy an entire day outdoors, reading, listening to music, or just partaking of the extreme serenity of the harbor. There is always a most salubrious breeze. People watching is primo, and if you pick up some ridiculously cheap, right-off-the-boat fresh seafood from the Working Watermen's Association, the island's non-profit clearinghouse for the catches of the local fishermen (like a minute's walk from the hotel), and prepare it back in the suite, you will have one of the best views on the island from which to enjoy your dinner. Over the years, I estimate we've spent about six weeks in the care of George and Betty and their very capable staff. In two weeks, we'll return for the first time since 2015. I have to say that moment I mentioned at the outset, when George takes us up to our suite and opens the door on that magnificent vista, has gotten me through a lot of the quotidian drag. We loved Captain's Landing. We had a perfectly clean room that was well laid out with a bath-and-a-half, a large balcony and a view of the sunset over the harbor. The little living room was quite comfortable. There was a nice kitchen, though we hardly used it. Maybe if our stay had been longer and we had run out of nice restaurants to try. There is also a view of the Ocracoke Lighthouse across the harbor. The staff warned us that it would "be our nightlight", but it wasn't obtrusive at all. Just a pretty sight on the far shore of Silver Lake. The staff also warned us that the ferry's would blow their whistles at 6:30 and 7:00 am, but they never woke me. The hotel is near the middle of town, walking distance from the Swan's Creek ferry. They rent bikes and golf carts and the rooms come with a DVD player. They have a very nice selection of DVDs for loan in the office. Captain's Landing will always be our first choice in Ocracoke. We had such a good time, we're planning a trip again in a few months to see what the island is like in October. read more

What a wonderful Hotel! It is located walking distance from the ferry waterfront on Silver Lake Harbor in Ocracoke Village. Our room is spacious, very well appointed, everything I could possibly want or need. Easily a 5 star room. The beds are perfect, just firm enough had a great nights sleep. The location is central to the village, pretty much everything can be walked to. My balconies. Yes there are three on my room, are overlooking the harbor and the light house. Perfect for viewing the sunset. The Hotelier, Betty, is a delight. She grew up on the island so can recommend the restaurants to visit and avoid and knows what sights to see. Just a 4 minute drive from the perfect and pristine beaches of Ocracoke. I recommend the Captains landing without hesitation. read more

What a find! We'd never been to Ocracoke, found Captain's Landing on a quick search, and it was the perfect answer. The staff called us, guided us, made sure we got to the island and were the perfect hosts for our stay. We ended up staying a few extra days and could have stayed more. The rooms are very nice, more like apartments with a full kitchen, 2 baths and a large patio with a wonderful view. It's hard not to be close to everything in Ocracoke, but Captain's Landing is walking distance to anything you'd need. They also offer golf cart rentals which is very convenient. We will be back, hopefully soon. read more

To me, what makes Captain's Landing so nice is the staff. Leading up to our stay, Ocracoke was unfortunately hit with a big power outage with no ETA on when power would be returned or when visitors would be permitted to access the island. The owner, Betty, gave me her personal cell phone number to reach her for any questions/updates on the situation. Luckily for us, the power was restored a few days before our arrival. Once we got here, we were greeted by a woman named Karen, who might be one of the nicest and accommodating people I've ever met. She has helped us a few times while we've been here and she's been so engaging and friendly to me, my wife, and 3yr old son. The suite we stayed in was very clean and led to a great view of the water and breath taking sunsets (when it wasn't raining). read more

I am disappointed in an individual that was rude, inconsiderate, law breaking and just plain wrong. My brother served multiple tours of duty in the middle east, more than he was required to. His life most days was in grave danger. His body is broken, in poor condition for a man his age with many aches and pains from the things and conditions he endured. Without complaint and went back voluntarily as often as he was able. He suffered a pretty bad case of traumatic brain injury from the daily percussion of enemy explosives. Also of course PTSD. The TBI causes intense seizures. He is at risk especially when stressed or fatigued. Two days ago he took the ferry to Ocracoke Ferry after contacting this lodging to make arrangements for himself and wife and service dog. The service dog alerts to seizures. He is fully credentialed, trained and has been instrumental in saving my brother from injury. They took the last ferry of the day. Were relaxed but tired. Lisa went to check in while Jim and the dog, Charlie waited in the car. The lady, Elizabeth, came out and declared the dog was a fraud. My brother attempted to show her the credential, not interested. He also put the trainer on the phone and she wasn't budging. She ranted and raved she was not letting them in and handed him her card and said "sue me, itll take you years" she also then said she has relationships with the local attorneys. He hadn't said a word about suing anyone. The end result was my brother was very upset, tired and had no place to stay on an island that is mostly closed for winter. Mind you had called ahead. This lady has no idea of her liability. When my brother got back from the middle east he worked several years inside the White House. His security clearance is the highest possible, as is his integrity. How he was treated is disgraceful. CAN ANYONE LET ME KNOW WHAT THE FEDERAL COURT district for Hyde County is. Attorney referral also greatly appreciated. My brother left quietly without incident but is still shaken up. The lady evidently made quit a scene while he remained quiet and she called him a fake. He kept himself in check but she hit all the buttons. Pictures included, by the way, the god, Charlie, is not a PIT he is a Catahoula Cattle dog. He is stone cold deaf and trained by electric collar and hand signals. He stayed the previous two nights at the founders in and at brunch a toddler seated nearby threw him French toast that he did NOT eat or approach. The inkeeper asked he be let out of the car and her call him back. They let Charlie out because they were desperate for a place to stay. Its a one horse town so to speak. We stayed here just before Easter 2015. Wonderful place, I love instead of a room you get a whole suite, I just wish we could of stayed more than one night. They had an Easter special that required us to stay two nights, but the manager was so kind to give it to us for only one night. The only reason that I am giving this place 4 stars instead of five is that their was no shampoo in the bathroom and the bath towels were a little small and rough. Otherwise this place was great! First off, I called to make the room reservation and got a call as soon as the staff got in to the office. The manager was very friendly and made sure our room was ready and made up before we arrived on the ferry. The office was great and is also a cute little gift shop. Again, the manager was very friendly and she took me on a tour of our room. All the rooms overlook Ocracoke's Silver Lake Harbor and the Ocracoke Lighthouse. There is a lovely balcony porch to watch the sunset over the harbor. Our suite was the smallest standard suite but comes with a full size (What I'd expect in an apartment) kitchen, 1/2 bath and full bath. You can access the porch from both the living room (with a nice pull out couch, flat panel TV with Direct TV and DVD player, and several chairs). The WiFi is fast for all that I required. This place is great, I'll definitely be staying here in the future! Just make sure to bring some shampoo and maybe a spare bath towel. read more
