I was so excited to try a new coffee bar and shop when I found this place off the side of I-20. I will say my first warning should have been that most of their site is dedicated to energy drinks and then espresso based coffee drinks. Since I'm working on reducing my caffeine intake I opted to try their customizable matcha latte, which is the focus of this review. Pros: they have lots of flavors and syrups and they support alternative milks if needed. The drive thru was quick to get through and there's a lot of space inside too. The baristas are nice! Cons: the matcha is powder mix based and actually settled at the bottom of the drink. Even after shaking/mixing, the matcha was gritty. Overall, I'd come back and try one of the coffee drinks rather than a tea based latte. And I recommend that if this is your first time, you sign up for the rewards program so you get your first drink for free (+ any upcharge for add ons). read more

I stopped in around 11ish on a weekday, it has a pretty lively feel. They have some artsy walls, some vibrant chairs & different seating options - small tables, large tables, high seating, counters, & couches. There is also space to sit outside, some vibrant chairs both in & out. There were only two other people there at the time so it was quiet, I imagine it might get a little loud when they are busier just due to the open space & acoustics. The place looks cool though, love the lights. Staff was friendly, drive thru seemed consistent & others did stop by during my short time there. Even though it wasn't busy inside I was greeted promptly, the girl was super nice, & my drink came out pretty fast. I ordered an iced sugar free Irish Cream latte. I am really happy that they have other sugar free flavors available other than just the basic vanilla or caramel. I got a large, it was a pretty good size & the price wasn't bad. I was a little disappointed they were sold out of their ham & cheese croissant so I didn't get a chance to try it. They do sell a variety of food & drinks, not just coffee, so there is something for everyone here. There was a time when coffee choices could be reduced to "Starbucks or a Diner". At that time Starbucks seemed like the refined choice. Now the proliferation of local coffee shops has diversified the coffee-scape in such a way that the newer coffee chains seem to me to cater to a market that doesn't give a s*** about espresso quality or coffee as a flavor at all. Truffle mocha banana matcha whatever rules the market, like Oreo took over coffee menus. The latest, weirdest mashup of syrups causes the buzz. I belong to a facebook "foodies" group where endless enthusiasm for Dutch Bros proliferates every time a new location opens. WTF. Anyywayyyyy...enter Black Rock, another generic chain with burnt coffee, espresso drinks where syrups overwhelm the coffee, and high energy, personal service that almost makes the coffee not matter. Almost. And, maybe it doesn't. Maybe I'm a too much of a purist. I guess if the espresso doesn't matter I'd rather the product was honest about that. Has anyone ever ordered a pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks because of the robust Arabica, mouth feel, or body? This is probably the point where my "foodie" impulse pushes me towards coffee snobbery. So, I'll stop pontificating. :) If you like a syrupy coffee drink and "the latest thing", you might like Black Rock Coffee Bar. Service was great. The store has lots of glass and a very natural-lit, open feeling. But, the property is surrounded by parking lot, which was weird and oddly (not to mention sadly) reflects DFW's embrace of itself as a concrete jungle. I'd rather go to Black Coffee, Summer Moon, Arcadia, CRUDE, Savor, really any local place that respects its own espresso enough to design the menu around coffee rather than syrup-of-the-season. read more

I ordered a medium iced sugar free vanilla latte, I'm not sure if it was medium or large though as it was very big but I never got a receipt to know what they charged me for!! We went this evening to try Black Rock Coffee during their soft opening. Between the people in the car we got a Chai Latte, chocolate chip chiller, peach smoothie, and strawberry smoothie. The chai latte is less sweet than rival coffee companies, and has a delicious flavor. The smoothies are good, and the kids seemed to love them. The chocolate chip chiller is akin to the Java Chip Frappe at Starbucks, and is a delicious choice. I really wish I could give this new spot a full five stars. Unfortunately the lack of Wi-Fi is worthy of losing a full star, probably more. I'm in a good mood though, and I'm hoping this place sticks around. I came in for the first time and I love the vibes. The dark brown and caramel decor tones, accented with the white tile, is just beautifully done for a coffee shop. I ordered a plain cappuccino, and it has a smooth strong flavor, perfect for me. The staff is friendly and helpful, and I really can't say enough great things about the place. Except the lack of Wi-Fi. One of the staff said that it could be a few months before they can offer it to customers. To me, the lack of Wi-Fi at an opened coffee shop is like a restaurant opening without its liquor license. Can it be done? Sure. However, it will definitely limit customers. I'm currently sipping a $5 cappuccino quickly, only to leave and find Wi-Fi to work elsewhere. I love when a new coffee spot opens up in Arlington that is not Starbucks. This is not a jab a Starbucks but most of them aren't designed as a place to sit down and do work while drinking a great cup of coffee or tea. Black Rock had lots of spaces to sit and areas to work. The ceilings are high which makes it feel more spacious and layout is open. I didn't see many outlets but I also did not do a real search. I tried the Irish coffee in an extra large (which felt larger than a venti even though it may not be) and it was very very sweet. If you like sweet drinks, they appear to have a lot of options. I like just a hint of sweet so it was a little much for me but the flavor was good. They don't have regular coffee drinks listed, but they serve them. All in all, I had no complaints and I will be back one evening to do some work, let you guys know if they have outlets, and to get a regular coffee ;) read more

Today was my 3rd time here and up until today I had zero complaints. Super friendly staff and really good beverages. Today I had a salted caramel cookie, which was delicious. Now my drink was different. I order iced chai lattes with almond milk pretty much everywhere I can. The last one I had here earlier this month was delicious. Todays not so much. It tasted watered down and looked watered down. So much so that I took it up to the barista to ask if she had put water in it when making it. She told me no, just almond milk and chai. She could obviously tell I wasn't happy with the taste, but made no attempt to make it right. This is where the 3 stars come in. Consistency in flavor and service are key in any company. I work as a supervisor in retail, so I understand this concept. When you even remotely sense the customer is not happy, you do what you can to make it right. Very nice place been to it many times but will not be back. They have changed refill policy. Most places give you at least one free refill or charge you $.50 or one dollar for refill.
