¡Buen provecho! After stalking her instagram for THE LONGEST, and practically begging her to come to STL, I finally made it to NYC. For the first time in my life, I took the subway (all by myself too!), about a 45 minute ride one way just to make it to her food. I placed my order after I exited the subway (due to connectivity issues on the train). It was only like a 5 minute walk from the station to La Fonda so the food wasn't quite ready yet. No worries. I sat at La Fonda's bar and enjoyed the music and good vibes from the restaurant's staff and customers. The food took a while to prepare (I ordered a lot though), so keep that in mind if you're on a schedule. When the young man brought my food, he apologized for the wait. It was an easy Sunday for me, so I had no issues with the wait. However, I did decide to sit at the bar and eat my food. VACALAITO: 3 nicely sized fritters, made from hearts of palm, if I remember correctly. Very tasty! I ate my leftovers today - 3 days later, and they were even better! (Warm up the leftovers in air fryer for best results) BEEFLESS EMPANADA: Should've ordered 2 because I'm craving more. You get one large empanada. It was so tasty and the beef was seasoned exquisitely! 10/10 would order again! (If you like a lil spice, order the chipotle sauce for dipping. So yum!!) MOXTAILS: Freggin fire. FIYAH!! The dinner came with moxtails (vegan/mock oxtails), white rice (they were out of their arroz con gandules), shredded cabbage, y maduros. I added her Cilantro Garlic sauce to the plain rice and OMG OMG!! Do it!! I ended up ordering 6 cilantro garlic sauces and 3 chipotle sauces; they're that good! I don't know what she uses for her moxtails, but the flavor and texture are insanely succulent. No weird chewy consistency to it at all. Initially it appeared that the portion was small, but it ended up being very filling and plentiful. 10/10 would order again. BISTEC ENCEBOLLADO: A vegan spin to a classic Latin Caribbean dish. This plate is hefty! A huge portion of vegan bistec is accompanied by white rice, pink beans, tostones, y ensalada. I only took a nibble of this on Sunday, but today/Wednesday, I warmed it up and ate the rest. The flavors have settled in and it's better today than it was Sunday. I spent @ $75 before the tip, which is decent for 2 meals and 2 appetizers. So many other things that I want to try from Black Rican Vegan, so I cannot wait to return! read more

Black Rican Vegan holds it down with its flavors at Smorgasburg, Prospect Park on Sundays. This small pop-up serves authentic, plant-based takes on traditional Puerto Rican and soul food dishes like mofongo and oxtail and rice ("moxtail" made from pea protein and jackfruit). BRV does jackfruit really well. The mofongo came with a side of jackfruit chicharron bites (yum!) that paired really well with the mashed-up fried plantains. I couldn't get enough of the garlic gravy that brought it all together. BRV only operates as a pop-up right now but does catering and cooking classes. If you are at Smorgasburg, make a beeline for their stall. Must try the oyster mushroom burger sliders next time. read more

The whole purpose of stopping by Smorgasburg Jersey City this past Saturday was to stop by Black Rican Vegan before they sold out! As someone who is Black & Puerto Rican herself, and vegetarian, I just have to support! I have been following their Instagram for a while now and was prepared to make it as early as possible! Black Rican Vegan was my sister and I's first stop at Smorgasburg and we knew exactly what we wanted to try out! FOOD & RATINGS -Chopped Cheese Eggrolls: 5/5 -Oyster Mushroom Burger w/ fries: 5/5 -Berry Lemonade: 4/5 The food came out hot & fresh and the team was so kind. I wish I could have ordered the entire menu but I will be ordering more when I go back! We each got the Chopped Cheese Eggrolls, Oyster Mushroom Burger and Berry Lemonade to share. The Chopped Cheese Eggrolls were AMAZING!! Not only were they perfectly crispy, the filling was delicious and the pink sauce on-top was the perfect touch. I would highly recommend ordering those if they're on the menu! The Oyster Mushroom Burger was also very crispy and flavorful. Everything down to the bun was well thought out and tasted incredible. I loved the pickles and fresh slaw! The french fries were also crisp with a delicious and slightly sweet seasoning. The Berry Lemonade was also tasty and paired well with the food. I put a order in for pasteles online drove 2 hours from Pa to pick them up at first didn't get and email or address to pick them up I hit her up on IG she tells me the date to pick them up I get my stuff a week later I decide to open the bag it wasn't what I ordered she gave yuca I ordered banana I sent sent her a message she reads it never responds back this is what get for supporting a small business and my own kind so I threw out the 6 pasteles that I payed $44 for never again read more

I was disappointed. I don't like handing out negative reviews. The food was ok. The empanadas were a nice size but the beef empanada was salty and the olives in the meat overpowered. The guava empanada was good but filling was lacking. The rice and pigeon peas was a bit hard. And the flan cocho was nothing to brag about. I'm sorry to leave a negative review but that was my experience. The positives: The oyster mushroom burger, it was pretty good, not going to lie. My favorite was the chicharrón. I decided to try this booth at the Bronx Night Market a few days ago. Still thinking about the coquito tres leches cake, guava empanada and fried oyster mushrooms. I had the oyster mushrooms with collard greens and mac & cheese. The sides needed more flavor so I took off a star. I had the Chi chi platter from the Black Rican Vegan while I attended Curlfest. The food was not good. The rice and beans tasted bland and had a burnt taste to it and it was cold. The plantains also had no taste. The jackfruit and the sauce was the only thing that had any flavor. For $22 it was not worth it, I ate a little and threw the rest away. read more

Just no words! I have just started to explore becoming a vegan and it has been hard as it is a lot of meal prep if you work crazy hours AND sometimes not as tasty. I saw this pop up as an advertisement and have been dying to try. I was actually sick last Monday sleeping, when my friend sent me a text at 1:30 saying "hey did you order?" I did an internal scream and quickly switched to the browser. Luckily there was still a selection left! I got the pastelón, Guava and cheese empanadas, and chopped chzzz no egg rolls. Each bite was a delightful explosion of flavors! I'm not sure what sauce was sent with the chopped chzz, but they WERE freaking awesome - if you sold extra of that on the side, I would buy. Delivery was also amazing. It was late, but it has been snowing in NY, so that was to be expected. But the driver (Devin) communicated that with me via text and arrived within the time frame he sent me. So PERFECT on the delivery. I can't wait until they are taking orders again in NYC! Right now they are in FL. I am patiently waiting for the return. Sorry I don't have a picture of the empanadas. I kind of inhaled those. read more
