It started off with some planning time within each team to determine what to cook. Once the staff gives you the green light, all hell breaks loose. Ok maybe that's an exaggeration, but it does get really hectic (especially at the end) as everyone rushes to finish their dishes. If you're a noob chef, don't worry because the Cooking Fools chefs are on hand to answer questions and help out with more complex processes. Keep in mind that you have almost every ingredient and cooking method at your disposal so don't limit your imagination. After the final buzzer, we presented our dishes to the judges, we ourselves ate our dishes (everyone cooked a lot), and then the judges declared the results. Attended the pasta class via Groupon…read more The first thing to know about this place is that it is NOT BYOB. You will want to drink while you cook because cooking is hard and drinking makes you not care. You can buy wine in the attached shop, but I advise you to buy one bottle of wine per person BEFORE your class begins. Between learning, cooking and eating, you will be there upwards of three hours. We showed up at 6:30 and didn't eat until 9:15. By that time, our one and only bottle of wine was empty. And guess what. The shop that sells wine closes at 9:00. They're total dicks about selling you another bottle past 9:00. And no, they won't let you run next door to get a bottle and bring it in because of their stupid liquor license. This will cause you to RAGE OUT. While we had wine glasses, we had to search high and low for water glasses. There's a cabinet full of glassware that says "Display Only." It feels like this is just a dumb oversight on their part. Here's my 3-part plan for making the hydration situation less stupid: 1. Announce when the shop is closing, so people can run and grab another bottle of wine. 2. Just be BYOB, because the alternative is annoying. 3. Provide water glasses and carafes throughout the room. I mean, come on. If you prepare by getting your liquid situation on lockdown before the class, you will have fun. You watch the instructor run through the entire pasta-making process, then you're turned loose to do it yourself. PAY ATTENTION while she talks because she won't repeat herself and you're bound to forget something. The instructors do come around periodically and basically shrug and say, "Yeah, you got it." After making our dough, we turned it into ravioli and pappardelle. Once you're done, they haul off everyone's pasta and they cook it for you. It's kind of a bummer you're not assured of getting YOUR pasta. Everyone's pasta is jumbled together and served on a big platter. If you want to take some home, grab a container and set some aside as you go through the line the first time. When we went to take some leftovers, the platters were empty. Bummer. This is a really good activity for couples or groups with multiples of two. You'll have fun and learn something you'll probably never try at home. But seriously, stock up on wine. It's a long night and they are dicks about their stupid rules.

I can only speak from festival experience, as they were at Riot Fest…read more The food I had from their stall was absolutely delicious, albeit a little but overdone. They were lavender infused chicken strips served with peach BBQ sauce and coleslaw. The coleslaw was fine, pretty standard. The chicken strips (ignoring the touch over cooked) had a really nice flavor. I was afraid it was going to be super floral and weird, but it balanced out really nicely. The BBQ sauce was absolutely delicious, and I would put that on absolutely anything. He was easy to contact and answered my multiple questions prior to the event day. On the day of the dinner, he showed up promptly and the dinner left every one of us stuffed until the next day! I've always said if I won the lotto I'd hire 2 people immediately:…read more1) a hair stylist to come to my home to blow-dry and style my crazy curls daily 2) a personal chef While I did win $7 in the lotto a few weeks ago (or most like lost $3) it's not quite enough to cover either of those splurges. However, it turns out that you don't need to win the lotto to hire a personal chef. You just need to know Andrew from Crying Onion. I'm absolutely hopeless in the kitchen...so hopeless that I've even managed to mess up a frozen pizza just by sticking it in the oven. My husband and I used to eat out and order in most nights, but that became more difficult after having our daughter. For awhile we tried Meez Meals*, which is basically healthy cooking for dummies. I was a huge fan for 6 months, but between work and motherhood found myself not having time for the very little time it takes to cook the meal and clean it up. And so I searched the millions of reviews on Yelp for some sort of cooking service that would be affordable and healthy.... I came across Crying Onion's reviews during my research. I got hungry just reading the reviews, but noticed Andrew's business was more for dinner parties and catering. I was about to give up and resort to eating cereal for the rest of my life when I checked out Crying Onion's website and noticed they offer vacuum sealed ready-to-heat meals. I very eagerly reached out to Andrew within minutes to get more information: * How the process works: He has a long list of entrees that covers all the food groups, but is open to other ideas as well. * The cost: Depends on the meal, but I've found most of my meals come to $11-12 for 1 meal (order for 2 to keep the costs down). The portions are pretty big so I usually end up eating the leftovers for lunch the next day. Andrew also requires an order of $225 for delivery, which takes up most of the room in my freezer, but not a huge deal since I don't make it to the grocery store too often. * The timing: Andrew needs about a week to prepare everything and then drops it all off ready to stick in the freezer. I've gotten 2 deliveries from Andrew (both enough for about 3 weeks) and I'm a huge fan. It now takes me no more than 3 minutes to "whip up" one of his meals and there's absolutely no clean-up involved. Most importantly the meals are very tasty! I haven't "cried" (pun intended) over a Crying Onion meal yet, but absolute favorites include the butternut squash pasta, kale and soba noodles, and mushroom pizza. I also travel frequently for work so my husband (who's even more pathetic in the kitchen than I am) is happy to have a meal that he can easily defrost and heat up in 3 minutes. Now if only Andrew styled hair...I'd be one happy girl. * http://www.yelp.com/biz/meez-meals-chicago#hrid:eZGPQX1l3b5jCP1GhVRKGA

Although our first meeting and tasting went well and they were open to helping create a menu that represented the Tuscan theme we were going for the catering manager seemed like this was her first event. The tables she ordered for the venue did not fit and she did not find out until 1 week before the wedding. The top tier of my cake was thrown away, even though specific instructions were provided. The service at the actual wedding was good and like other poster I did have someone dedicated to me to bring food and drinks which was very nice. However, when you spend over $10,000 to feed 80 people that seems like the least they could do. After filling out the survey with Wolfgang they did send me a $100 gift certificate for the restaurant but that hardly covers the top tier of my cake that I will never get back. In addition, they sent me another email recently because I had not used my certificate to see if they could deliver some food instead and when I asked for a similar Tuscan menu for a New Years Eve dinner I was told they would get back to me with a menu on 12/21 and then I never heard anything back. Bottom line - the food was really amazing and people still talk to me about it. The entire process left a lot to be desired.

While I am still disappointed at the multiple contacts during the process, the execution the day of the event was top notch. Several people have emailed us since the wedding saying that it was the best food that they've ever had at a wedding. The service was also very professional - competent staff, prompt service, and considerate while speeches were made. I particularly liked that they arranged to have one person dedicated to me (the bride) during the evening to bring appetizers and beverages so that I didn't have to worry about finding the bar and could chat with guests. They were flexible to incorporate some personalized aspects into the catering such as New Zealand wines since my husband is from there and a signature cocktail (Strawberry Basil mojito) which was absolutely fantastic. I would use them again, however I do wish that there was more guidance through the process in terms of a timeline or list of activities that we needed to accomplish in order to pull off the event. There were sometimes surprises in terms of payments suddenly being due in two days (while in the original contract, it was not top of mind and an earlier reminder would have been helpful).
