I understand the concept of suddenly realizing you need to find a dentist or a plumber or great Pad Thai. But getting up in the morning and realizing that you have to find an asphalt paving contractor is a new one for me. Recent heavy rains caused signifiant erosion of the edge of our property near the street. Gravel washed out of our property and down the street into a storm drain. The City of Carlsbad was not thrilled that they had to send out a special cleaning truck to vacuum that junk out of the storm drain, and they let us know that it was our responsibility to fix the problem. The street is paved with (very old and cracked) asphalt, and the berm that prevented erosion had disintegrated a long time ago. I called numerous places, asking for advice and estimates. I'm not exactly an expert on paving, so I wasn't even sure what questions to ask. Several of the companies that I called didn't seem interested in such a small job, and one didn't even do asphalt. When I contacted Black Ops Asphalt, I got what I needed. The owner came out to look at it and gave me an estimate. His crew showed up more or less on time, finished the job in about half an hour, cleaned the area, and drove off into the sunrise. I am thrilled. I cannot imagine that I will actually need the services of an asphalt paving company again, but if I do, I will certainly call Black Ops. read more

We are not sure how they could have positive reviews on quality because the job they did for us was horrible. Friends commented how bad of a job it was. We called Cory to address issues and he said we should have pointed out issues before the job started which we did show him the entire driveway prior and asked him to fix holes and low areas that were collecting water when it rained. We have left multiple messages/texts and he has been very vague with responses and has been promising for over a year that he will come when he is in the area (30 min from Fallbrook). We paid over $8k and it looks worse than before. The only thing they were quick at was requesting to get paid. We would not recommend. Bad service, quality and communication. You can see from the photos the work they did- did not hold up. This was a lack of quality issue and they never once came back out to even look at the issue. read more

Black Asphalt A few years ago, I made the mistake of using a driveway asphalt coating company without the appropriate recommendations. This time I was much more careful it finding a rightly recommended company. We had to do a two-step process for our driveway. The first step was a repair with new asphalt in numerous sections, it was followed a few days later with a driveway tar coating. Corry (the owner) was very particular with the work he and his team did with the asphalt work. In our case it was a full day of work. I made an appointment with Brittney via text to have my driveway looked at for resealing. The morning I was supposed to meet them, 4/30, i got a call that the appointment was canceled, but they could come out later that afternoon, which was fine. I'm flexible. After they met me and took measurements of my driveway, they told me they'd email a proposal, I never heard from them again. I texted Brittney and asked if a proposal would be emailed since I hadn't received anything. Maybe they had the email address wrong, who knows. But I never got a response back from the text or call. Not sure why they would bother coming out for an estimate and then never send one or reply to my follow ups. Didn't think my driveway was so bad...! :) read more

I met with a number of contractors and Cory was the only one that really seemed to try and grasp what I was hoping to accomplish. I admittedly am very picky and had a lot of little details I wanted done right, and Cory was more than willing to toss some ideas back and forth. I not only needed to tear up my existing driveway, but also needed a long strip of asphalt repaired along the side of my property to improve a drainage issue. I also wanted to change the slope on part of my property to provide a flatter area for basketball. I contacted Black Ops because of all the rave reviews and five star ratings. Cory came out to give me an estimate on sealcoating and repairing my driveway. He seemed very professional and knowledgeable and I looked forward to receiving an estimate and having Black Ops do the job. After a little over a week I had not heard anything so called and was told that Cory was "very busy and a little behind" but would be getting to my estimate "over the weekend". The receptionist was apologetic, but the estimate never came. A second call another week later I was told the same thing: "over the weekend." Another week passed and I called a third time. This time I was told that an employee had been seriously injured in an accident and this required Cory to fill in to complete scheduled jobs causing him to be behind on estimates. I was very understanding regarding the employee's accident and the resulting delay in my estimate and was always courteous and patient every time I called. I was given the impression on the last call that I would be receiving the estimate "soon". So I waited. It has now been a little over two months since Cory originally came out to estimate my job and I have never heard back from him or anyone at the company. Maybe I'm expecting too much, but I feel that good business practice dictates that I should have minimally received a courtesy call or email letting me know they were not going to be able to give me an estimate and/or do the job. The asphalt driveway at our church had deteriorated over the years, and had several areas where roots underneath had caused "eruptions" -- some bad enough to be tripping hazards. A couple weeks ago I had Black Ops repair and repave the parking lot behind my buildings in Hillcrest. The lot was probably 20 years past due for this work and I didn't think it could be restored to what it should be. Corey and Black Ops are miracle workers! I was happy about every aspect of my dealing with Corey and his company but was busy caring for elderly family member and then Covid hit and it was 8 months before I finally got to the job site to see the work. I was shocked that it looked like it had never been done. They had to have used the thinnest seal coat ever. My asphalt is not in bad shape and I would expect it to last over a year or more so this was certainly the thinnest seal coat I have ever had. I contacted Corey and he didn't sound too happy but said he would stop by and check and get back with me and that was a month ago. Cory really helped out our tiny, 9-home HOA which has the financial burden of maintaining our own street and cul-de-sac.
